Re: Metering - K7

Bruce, assuming that center weighted simulation with matrix metering
sensor is done reasonably well, I see no reason to have major
discrepancies between center weighted meters of various cameras. Thus,
Bill's mention surprises me as well...

One teaspoon (theres a clue in the name!) per person, and one for the pot.
Multiply by the number of pots of tea you want to make. Tea keeps for a long

also read this:

that answer is somewhat correct - cheap crapola tea tends to be little
bits and pieces of leftover/broken so it has higher density and weighs
more to the teaspoon, the more expensive it gets the less weight per
teaspoon but compensated by higher yield from the superior quality...
you can figure a span from 50 cups to 100 mugs per 100 grs, it is a
broad scale depending on how strong you like it, how cheap you are ]=)
and how good your particular tea is in taste and yield.

Your input is much appreciated. I am somewhat surprised that you are
seeing such a difference with center weighted metering. It would
seem like that is something Pentax would be able to do reasonably well
whether it was digital or film. I wonder if perhaps there is
something more to do with dynamic range of the sensor on the K7.
Earlier digital models may have had narrower range than the current
K7 which would show up as metering inconsistencies.

The DR of the K7 doesn't seem any (or at least not appreciably) longer
than

the K7. The new meter is accurate, the old one either isn't, or is very
easily fooled.

Re: K7 movies

2010-03-02 Thread Thibouille
Mmm I remember I opened them directly in iMovie.

The file format is AVI but the most important thing is the codec, as
some others said, Mjpeg. It produces huge files but are very easy to
edit on the computer since that codec doesn't require a lot of power
to compress/decompress.

Edit: I just imported an AVI/Mjpeg file straight from K-7 into iMovie'09:
File -> Import -> Movie -> select AVI file.
It will convert to MOV/Mjpeg automatically (and reduce resolution if
you ask it to do so).

Re: peso - girl

2010-03-02 Thread Igor Roshchin

Sasha,

I saw this photo earlier, when you posted the photo of the seals.
I liked that photo, but the composition was a bit disturbing to me eye.

I am not sure, - it's probably the combination of the light and
the details, - but I'd like to have some more on the lower side
and probably a bit on the left side.
Quite possible that I expect her eyes to be in the center of the photo.
It is possible that if there were more light on the hair, it would
work better with this composition.

Sounds like my work flow only back ward. I need +0.3 to =0.7 and +1.0
at times with my K-10D.

Zero EV or +0.3 is pretty much all that is required for D1H, D2H and
D200, if needed at all.

For my part it's matrix metering. My experience is that the metering
is less sensitive to small, bright light sources, like specular
reflexes, streetlights, etc. I also find that the metering is more
consistent across pictures of the same scene with minor variations in
composition, for example, than was the case for K10/20.

In my opinion this is no less than one can expect from raising the
number of metering sites from 11 to 77. :-) It gives a lot more room
for weighting of the metering loci.

I'm also very satisfied with the flash metering of the K-7, but I
can't compare this to the performance of K10/20 because I apparently
had a slightly malfunctioning flash at the time. All I can say is that
I like it the way it happens in the K-7.

When I started school back in the dark ages, my parents told my grade
one teacher that I was left handed and they did not want her to
"train" me to become right-handed. Apparently it wasn't uncommon for
teachers to do things like tie kids' left hands behind their backs so
they couldn't use them to write, or to actually punish children for
holding pens and pencils in their left hand. My teacher told my
parents she believed in letting children write with their preferred
hand.

I can't imagine the torment that poor lefties went through being
forced to write with their right hand. And later consequences? Who
knows?

That's really old school. They abandoned that idea some time before the
1950s around here.

Weren't doing it in North Carolina in 1955 when I started ... not that
it matters, since I am naturally right handed anyway. They even provided
special left-hand desks for the kids who wrote that way.

Hard to imagine any school system more back-woods than Durham, NC in the
 50s.

That's my take. And if JCO is using plain FTP to transfer files, his
site has probably been pwned through an unsecured/unpatched router.

In my experience, cheap web hosting isn't worth the money saved over a

Re: Metering - K7

2010-03-02 Thread Thibouille
I do not own a K10 anymore but I remember I 'brutaly' tested
integrated flash exposure by firing it in front of a mirror.
* The K10 shot was almost unusable, the whole mirror completely eaten
by the flash light.
* The K7 shot however was different, still eaten by the flash light
of course, but I could use the rest of the mirror image if I wanted.
Only the area near the flash reflection was unusable.

You're welcome, Paul. Happy if I can help.
I have to say I'm very impressed by the quality of the video.
Comparison with my LX3 (720p as well) isn't fair at all. The LX3

influence but bitrate has a lot more).

I'm surprised nobody's mentioned Melatonin. You can buy it in most
vitamin stores and for a lot of people, it seems to help a ton in
getting a fairly uninterrupted night's sleep before your body has had
time to adust to the new zone. Which has the effect of speeding up
the adjustment.

It tends to produce weird and intense dreams.

It works for me. Not for my wife; the dreams are hairy enough to wake
her up, scared.

I suppose giving up alcohol and caffeine might help too, but who wants
to do that?
 -Tim

If you're not lactose intolerant, try a glass of warm milk.

Melatonin is one of the "active ingredients" in warm milk, along with
tryptophan. It's not concentrated, so if you react intensely to it, that
might be a better way to get the benefit with fewer side effects. Much
lower dose than from a supplement.

I think it's actually a combination of the melatonin, tryptophan and the
relaxing effect of the warmth, because it seems more effective than is
accountable for from the dosage.

Alcohol and caffeine dehydrate you. The point of the no alcohol
proscription is to warn you not to count on alcohol to re-hydrate.

Drink additional water to offset the dehydrating effect of alcohol or
caffeine.

A small amount of red wine can actually help relax you to enable you to
sleep.

Remember, left-handed people are in their right minds.

They abandoned that idea some time before
the 1950s around here.

Weren't doing it in North Carolina in 1955 when I started ... not that
it matters, since I am naturally right handed anyway. They even
provided special left-hand desks for the kids who wrote that way.

Hard to imagine any school system more back-woods than Durham, NC in
the 50s.
I don't recall anyone ever forcing us to switch to right-handedness when
I started first grade in 1947, they just pretty much assumed we were all
right-handed. Our instructions were to turn the paper so the top edge
was pointed toward the upper left corner of the desk - which is why you
see so many left-handed people curling their hand over the top of their
script and essentially writing upside-down. Being the independent sort,
I turned my paper toward the upper right corner so I don't do the
upside-down thing. My penmanship still isn't worth a damn, though...

That's my take. And if JCO is using plain FTP to transfer files, his site
has probably been pwned through an unsecured/unpatched router.

In my experience, cheap web hosting isn't worth the money saved over a high
quality (pricier) hosting service.

Becoming a famous drummer in the world's most successful rock band?
Seriously. Ringo Starr is left-handed but as a child was forced to
learn everything right-handed, including playing the drums. That's why
his drumming style - in particular the fills - is so distinctive. (If
you play drums even a little, you can easily try playing a "backwards"

Re: OT/2: back from repair

2010-03-02 Thread Ken Waller
During my elementary schooling in the early 50s -I was constantly harassed
for being a left handed writer - got rapped with a ruler by teachers trying
to get me to change. I fixed em by injuring my right hand so I had to write
with my left (in all other aspects of handed ness, I'm a righty)

Remember, left-handed people are in their right minds.

Weren't doing it in North Carolina in 1955 when I started ... not that it
matters, since I am naturally right handed anyway. They even provided
special left-hand desks for the kids who wrote that way.

Hard to imagine any school system more back-woods than Durham, NC in the
50s.
I don't recall anyone ever forcing us to switch to right-handedness when I
started first grade in 1947, they just pretty much assumed we were all
right-handed. Our instructions were to turn the paper so the top edge was
pointed toward the upper left corner of the desk - which is why you see so
many left-handed people curling their hand over the top of their script
and essentially writing upside-down. Being the independent sort, I turned
my paper toward the upper right corner so I don't do the upside-down
thing. My penmanship still isn't worth a damn, though...

Members (such as myself) will be showing off 5 photos each and

Miserere - if he decides to come) can stare in slack-jawed wonder at
our awesomeness. And drink beer. Did I mention beer? Should be fun.

Larry,

Well, I tend to be on 80 M (3.5 MHz), 40M (7.0 MHz), and 20M (14.0
MHz).using either code or sideband. I do have 2 M (144.0) transceiver in
the car for chats on FM through several of the local repeaters. Since
you have been gone, the morse code requirement has been dropped and
there are only 3 license classes, Tech, General & Extra. The tech
license gets you on the 2 M and down to a piece of 10 M (28.0 MHz). The
other two give you access to at least a piece of all the bands with
sections reserved for the Extra license. If you have more questions, I
am happy to answer them but we outta take off forum to spare the others,
chatter about another consuming hobby.

If we're going to abide by the Truth in Advertising law, shouldn't we
at least spell it: "Illuminaughty"?

Mix your used developer and stop bath together so they balance out. They
definitely should not go into the septic system. Most areas have a
household hazardous waste disposal location or periodic collection and
you should be able to take it there.

Here in Raleigh/Wake County NC it used to be first Saturday of the
month, but they've recently expanded the service to six days a week year
round. Specifically lists "photographic chemicals" among the itemss
accepted.

No additional charge beyond what I already pay for
water/sewer/trash/curbside recycling.

Try Googling "Your Town/County State household hazardous waste" - that's
how I found out about the new facility in Wake County.

If they don't take fixer, I'd ask around local mini-labs. If you're not
generating great quantities of waste, you can probably find one that
will take the used fixer and add it to their own chemicals for
de-silvering.

They might be willing to take on your used developer and stop as well.
