Equipment Updates

2010-03-29 Thread William Robb

A couple of updatesI got my Katz-Eye screen diald in on my K7.
The stock screen comes with a .4mm shim, apparently this is standard, I
foundthat a .2mm shim was the best one.

I tested this with a 50/1.2 lens at f/1.2.
So, if anyone is thinking of installing a Katz Eye into their K7, probably
don't buy an entire shime set, I expect that if one gets the shims from
.15mm to .3mm (they come in .05mm increments) then you will have one that
will work.

And, my 60-250 came back last week. It seems to work, and was gone somewhat
less time than I thought it would be gone for.
As a recap, the SDM died on it so I sent it to Pentax Canada, via my local
pusher. Pentax Canada then shipped it back to Japan where the repair was
done.

In all it took something like 7 weeks to do the repair.

 :-(

That's really bad news Rob. I hope they find the perps and throw the book at
them. Make sure you get good advice about securing everything against a 2nd
try - they often seem to come back for another bite. When my place was done
over almost 10 years ago to the day they tried a few weeks later to break
into my neighbours house, but were caught and banged up for a few months.

The worst aspect of it is that it can undermine your confidence. I
occcasionally find myself woken at night by dreams that I've gone out
leaving the front door open - something I never used to dream about before.
Still, at least that has replaced the dream in which the house falls down as
a result of my negligence and the insurance won't pay out...!

I rarely post photos from jobs, but I kind of like the way this one worked
out. It's for the website of an engineering consulting firm. I wanted a
shot with the CEO in the foregorund and his assistants behind him. I
couldn't use the ceiling as a reflector, because it was black, but I
wanted the orange wall in this lobby location. I used one light firing
into an umbrella about three feet to right of camera and about 8 feet
high. A second light is tucked into a hallway just to the right of the
third person in frame. It's firing into an umbrella and getting lots of
bounce from the hall's white walls and ceiling. A third light set at very
low power is behind the trio and firing against the wall.

that they've got out of me 20+ years of premiums sans claims.

Anyhow thanks for all the good wishes guys, the majority of my kit was
in my safe which they should have shoulder charged a few times (as it
weighs well over 1tonne), might have knocked some sense into them.
Only lost A day of shots of the little guy from the local fair on

Hi Team,

Got home this morning to find that my house had been broken into an
ransacked, seems the meat heads left my Pentax DSLR but took our Canon

Shots added to webpage of Glory Hole Waterfall.

2010-03-29 Thread tbeilby
I went to the Glory Hole Waterfall again this weekend, this time with the
PSNWA. I changed the shots I had on my website to the newer trip and also
shrank them down so they would load faster, with resulting loss of
sharpness. I really like the K 7. Even tried a couple of short videos. Will
try to figure how to post one online sometime. Counting down to April 1st.
Hope I get a ticket.

Glad to read about 60~250's fairly short term 'treatment.'
I've often read references to a Katz Eye screen. Could you possibly refer me
to some info regarding its use? OK if no time for such. :)

Thanks,

A couple of updatesI got my Katz-Eye
screen diald in on my K7.
The stock screen comes with a .4mm shim, apparently this is
standard, I foundthat a .2mm shim was the best one.
 I tested this with a 50/1.2 lens at f/1.2.
So, if anyone is thinking of installing a Katz Eye into
their K7, probably don't buy an entire shime set, I expect
that if one gets the shims from .15mm to .3mm (they come in
.05mm increments) then you will have one that will work.

And, my 60-250 came back last week. It seems to work, and
was gone somewhat less time than I thought it would be gone
 for.
As a recap, the SDM died on it so I sent it to Pentax
Canada, via my local pusher. Pentax Canada then shipped it
back to Japan where the repair was done.
In all it took something like 7 weeks to do the repair.

This happened with both the Pentax AF540 and the white lightning. The 540 was a

That's quite likely if you're shooting jpegs. Something in your jpeg
settings could be the cause of the magenta cast. I once did a manual
adjustment on the AWB sliders when trying to correct for mixed
lighting. I forget to change it back and it skewed my white balance
selections.

If you are shooting jpegs, try RAW to confirm that the glitch is in

The stock screen comes with a .4mm shim, apparently this is standard, I
foundthat a .2mm shim was the best one.
 I tested this with a 50/1.2 lens at f/1.2.
So, if anyone is thinking of installing a Katz Eye into their K7, probably
don't buy an entire shime set, I expect that if one gets the shims from
.15mm to .3mm (they come in .05mm increments) then you will have one that
 will work.

That's good, important info, William. Is your AF in tune with the
manual focusing? I imagine that having a camera with AF adjust for
individual lenses plus shims for the focusing screen means that as
long as the mirror is close to proper alignment one can obtain a
correctly adjusted camera at home without needing to send it out for
repair if the mirror isn't spot on.

I understand this doesn't matter to some folks who prefer not to touch
the inside of a camera, but to DIY types like myself it's great.

What Katzeye screen do you have? Given your 50mm f/1.2 I assume you
bought it for manual focusing. When the K-8 (or whatever it's called)
is announced I'll decide whether to buy it or pick up a cheap (at that
point) K-7. Either way I'll be buying a Katzeye screen from the onset;
I have too much nice manual-focus glass that doesn't get enough use on
my K10D due to viewfinder woes.

Cheers,

That's quite likely if you're shooting jpegs. Something in your jpeg
settings could be the cause of the magenta cast. I once did a manual
adjustment on the AWB sliders when trying to correct for mixed lighting. I
forget to change it back and it skewed my white balance selections.

If you are shooting jpegs, try RAW to confirm that the glitch is in the

Make sure lens corrections is turned off (this will affect jpeg or raw

Also, I've found it helpful to format the card with my computer (full

don't buy an entire shime set, I expect that if one gets the shims from
.15mm to .3mm (they come in .05mm increments) then you will have one that
will work.

Is your AF in tune with the
manual focusing?

My adjustment method has been to make the manual focus as accurate as
possible via shimming the screen in, and then use the AF bias as needed to
bring the AF into line. The K7 has been very good about not needing a lot of
AF biasing though.

I understand this doesn't matter to some folks who prefer not to touch
the inside of a camera, but to DIY types like myself it's great.

It isn't terribly difficult to change out the screen, and the shims are
actually easier to change out than the screen.

What Katzeye screen do you have? Given your 50mm f/1.2 I assume you
bought it for manual focusing. When the K-8 (or whatever it's called)
is announced I'll decide whether to buy it or pick up a cheap (at that
point) K-7. Either way I'll be buying a Katzeye screen from the onset;
I have too much nice manual-focus glass that doesn't get enough use on
my K10D due to viewfinder woes.

I have the split image with microprism and I had them put the architectural
grid on along with Optibrite treatment.
It makes the camera much more usable for manual focus, the screen is
noticably better than the stock screen (though it isn't by a huge amount),
but having the split image for manual focus is very nice indeed.
One thing I noticed yesterday that I never knew before was how very sharp my
50/1.2 is wide open.

Look at the top button of the 4 way controller. (time delay symbol)
When you press it, are you set-up for continuous shooting?

That's quite likely if you're shooting jpegs. Something in your jpeg
settings could be the cause of the magenta cast. I once did a manual
adjustment on the AWB sliders when trying to correct for mixed lighting. I
forget to change it back and it skewed my white balance selections.

If you are shooting jpegs, try RAW to confirm that the glitch is in the

Re: Help with crushed SD card

2010-03-29 Thread John Sessoms
In this case it only has to work one time to recover the images from the
card.

From: P. J. Alling

That's the solution I used with the *ist-Ds the K20d however has
tighter tolerances and won;t accept a card with tape on it. Also the
tape is eventually unable to hold out to the pressure from the sensor
and needs to be replaced. I wouldn't trust it in a critical
situation. I never know when that fix is going to fail.

correctly adjusted camera at home without needing to send it out for
repair if the mirror isn't spot on.

I understand this doesn't matter to some folks who prefer not to touch
the inside of a camera, but to DIY types like myself it's great.

What Katzeye screen do you have? Given your 50mm f/1.2 I assume you
bought it for manual focusing. When the K-8 (or whatever it's called)
is announced I'll decide whether to buy it or pick up a cheap (at that
point) K-7. Either way I'll be buying a Katzeye screen from the onset;
I have too much nice manual-focus glass that doesn't get enough use on
my K10D due to viewfinder woes.

Cheers,

Luckily, all that was needed was the undoing of all the baseplate

cleaning out 3 years of fluff. It was quie horrendous in there.

First KX impressions are quite favourable. No hot pink version

You're an adjective.

I can't come to Grandfather Mountain as I'm feeling a bit cotty
today.

That's awful, are you taking anything for it?

Re: question for the brits American to English translation

2010-03-29 Thread P. J. Alling
I lived in LA for most of a year, I never found a person who could
manage a conversation that wasn't about themselves, or a driver who knew
the rules of the road in their own state, (though truth to tell, any
place that /allows/ Motorcycles make a third lane between cars stopped
in traffic, probably doesn't have any reason to expect drivers to care).

Tired old joke. Are you including our numerous California PDML

Do you speak any French? Or English with a Canadian accent, perhaps?

We never expect or anticipate problems, but have run into more
than our share of surly waiters and counter help here and there.

Just my run of luck, I guess... I love Paris, it just doesn‘t love

Paris is like California, which would be a wonderful place, if it
weren't for Californians...

Encouragingly, only 6 people have yet to pay up, and all but one of

services going through their traditionally leisurely motions.

Now it's up to Christine and the framers (which would be a great name
