Bit late replying, but I reckon WB's not far off. I always get stage shots a
little warm and the customers seem to like it.

I put one of them in LR3 and hit the B&W button with no adjustments. That
works well and would be good for the era of the show. Perhaps with a bit of
split toning? Also desaturating a little gives a nice vintage look too.

Of course, you did a good job of the shoot - they're also well composed and
lit and show the characters well. That's what the cast and director will be
looking for I'm sure...

Macs may not get viruses like that, but there are a lot of phishing schemes
that bypass the computer altogether and work purely on social engineering.
Also, if you're on facebook, it has become a very fruitful vector for malware.
You have to be very careful of what you click "like" on, and you should never
"click on this button to see the video we're talking about", or "cut and paste

So, there I was on this train bridge trying to line up a picture of a hotel

And I'm wandering around with my 6x7 to my eye and I literally stepped off

I managed not to fall by only stepping off with one foot rather than both,
but it was a very close call.

Subject: Foul Mood & other whatnot

I've been in an utterly foul mood all day today because of a fall I took
during last night's theater shoot. There was no serious injury, but I
still acutely feel last night's moment of humiliation as I write this.
This is the 2nd fall I've experienced while doing photography, the 1st
being a stumble on some cracked sidewalk while out on a photowalk shortly
before our holiday to San Diego this past June--gosh, I racked my knee on
that one.

Accidents happen, I get that. I'd like to do more professional photo ops
for money, but if I don't get my balance, coordination, and weight back in
line, my photographer's moniker is going to end up being *Miss
Tumbleweed.* While it may surprise those who've met me recently, I once
was fairly athletic--not a star athlete of any kind, mind you-- but I had
solid hand-eye coordination, balance, strength, and fitness. Well, that's
all gone to pot lately, and this is a big problem because of the
athleticism involved when doing photography, which I very much enjoy--and
would enjoy even more if I wasn't so out of shape.

I need to change some habits--less time at the computer and much more
physical activity of the calisthenics and exercise variety--not my
favorite kind, but . . . So, if I'm not around on list for a while,
you'll know why.

Anyway, about the PDML Exhibition wrap up: A few PDMLers have emailed me
about not hearing back from Sue. I've recently talked to her, and she
admits to being behind sked, but as her original email states, she wants
to close out shipping of prints etc by the end of August, so folks should
keep that in mind. If Sue hasn't gotten back to you, she will, and it's
best to keep sending her emails than me.

For Ted: I haven't gotten to the post office yet, but I will for sure
next week.

If anything important comes up, I can be reached via email off list. No
problem.

Cheers, Christine

Simpler still, rotate the level 180 degrees relative to the bubble

No doubt that the tripod would have been an impediment here. Your frame is
highly dependent on camera position, and a tripod gets in the way of that,
particularly when you have to work fast. I'm sure your client will be very
pleased.

Re: Theater Shoot--White Balance Check

2010-07-31 Thread Christine Aguila
Thanks, Stan & everyone else. The contact sheets have dried-down now for a
few hours, and I had a look at them on my back porch in open shade, and they
look less red than earlier, but I think I will decrease saturation just a
tiny bit as suggested by Cotty and Stan. The client will get a total of 64
photos--I've already made my picks and cropped etc . I can use the sync
tool to do the minor decrease in saturation--it will go quick. I just tried
the eyedropper on a few and the result is too blue; I don't think the client
will want it that blue.

Just a big thanks for this and all the earlier feedback. Cotty, I really
had your earlier advice in my noodle when shooting, so big thanks there.
Much appreciated. Ann, you were right about the actors. Charles, I
requested the light guy hang around for last nights shoot (as you
suggested) and got the ok from the director. Then last night when I asked
for the lights to be turned up a bit as we were about to begin, the set
design guy threw a fit, but I was able to get them up a bit anyway. Chris,
I took notes and the director took notes--between the two of us we got good
coverage of the play.

Amazingly, I never used the tripod. I just couldn't seem to make it work so
that I could work fast. The director wanted the shoot done in an hour, and
we were done in about 1 hour and 15 minutes. I just had to hold her
steady, focus, and concentrate. I was absolutely soaked after the
shoot--just drenched--mainly because I was so nervous--more about that under
separate cover, as they say. Thanks again, everyone, Big cheers, Christine

Bottom line: for my money you are pretty much spot on. There will always

It doesn't look like it can be calibrated/adjusted, so now I get to turn
OFF the level display, or train my brain to always show the display "a
half-bubble off level" when I want the camera to actually be level.

So... it was kinda neato to discover that feature, and kind of a bummer
what it shows me.

Your bubble level could be off a little bit as well. I thought my K7 level
was terrible based on a carpenters level. When I checked it with a better
level it looked better as well.
A better test is to see if it's level is to test it against the horizon of a

Nice work and a happy looking cast!
The color is a tiny bit warm, but appropriately theatrical.
You could tone it down or leave it as is.
I can't vouch for Stan's numbers, but his sentiment is right.
You pulled it off quite nicely.

definitely too warm on mine... but that should be an easy fix... go
for the skin tones, of course but you know that!

Looks like the lighting guy overdid the "surprise pink" a bit...

But from a "getting the shots" angle, they are spot on! Nice work!

Some of the leaning to red may be intentional stage wise though -
tungston lit interiors, etc... so you might not

want to do what would be a standard correction otherwise.

Poor terminology on my part. I meant how you got a very close
composition, not that it had been cropped. I'd assumed that it was full

If you drag files from removable media (CF cards, external hard drives
etc) to the trash and then eject, the next time you plug that removable
media back into the computer, the trashed items reappear in the trash.

Drag them to the trash and then empty the trash and this won't happen.

It looks a bit yellow, but not unacceptably so. I'd call it "warm enough that
it gives the impression of having been shot under artificial lighting" which
can actually be a good thing.

Some of the shots appear not-quite-level but this is a WB check not a
level check, right?

When I pulled 123_2 into LR and clicked the WB eyedropper on the tux of the man
in the middle of the couch, though, it dropped the temp down by 25 points and
the tint by 19 and I would have to say that it looks better to my eye when it
is a bit cooler and greener. Maybe even into the low 20's towards the green
from where that image is currently. IMO and all that.

Pentax-M 135/3.5 on my wife's Panasonic G2. Airbus 380 taken at the
Farnborough airshow last weekend.
http://www.mitch.myzen.co.uk/Farnborough2010/slides/_1000263.html

Works well if a teeny bit soft - don't know whether that's the lens,

my

inability to focus manually or a bit of shake / movement. Of course,

on
the

Micro 4/3 system it's equivalent to 270mm. I'll get round to doing

some

controlled tests one day.

Airbuses (Airbi?) always look as if they're about to fall out of the
sky.

Karin got a nice bit of foreground interest in this one during the

Red
Arrows'

display:
http://www.mitch.myzen.co.uk/Farnborough2010/slides/_1000248.html

That was taken with the Panasonic 14-42 lens.

that's easily the best shot of the set, I'm sorry to have to tell you.
I was
going to suggest you put it into next year's book, but I see there's no
Pentax involvement :o(

The idea was for Karin to have free rein for the day without me interfering
- after all it is her camera and not a toy for me! I just wanted to try out
a couple of Pentax lenses for real hence the last 3 pictures. Unfortunately
the battery ran out just after the Airbus did its thing and we'd managed to
leave the freshly charged spare in the charger at home. Guess who got the
blame?

Chris

Well obviously it's always your fault.

Did you eject the card from the mac, or did you just pop it out of the

just popped it out, especially if you hadn't emptied the trash.

Interesting observation deleting files from CF cards

2010-07-31 Thread David J Brooks
When i save files to be printed at our local Shoppers Dug Mart kiosk,
i save them on an old 128mg CFII card. On my PC, if i have any files i
want gone, i just select and hit delete.
The other day i transferred some photos from the iBook and dragged the
files on the CF card to the trash. When i loaded the card at Shoppers,
those old files were still on the card along with my new files for
printing.

Interesting.

Got new extension tubes for the K20D and needed to try them out.  Never used

them before.  Partner picked a bouquet last night so I took a display out on
the

not

Not yet sure if it has to do with either mirror action or shutter, as they

Re: k10d help

2010-07-31 Thread Dario Bonazza

Hi Luka,

A friend of mine is experiencing the same behaviour, but it's more
complicated than you think and not yet solved.
It happened once a few months ago, when its K10d shutter count was around
70,000. Apparently, the shutter died and the camera behaved like yours.
After trying what he could do (like extracting the battery, waiting some
time, re-inserting the battery and such) he resolved to send the camera to
Pentax service, convinced the shutter was broken and had to be replaced.
When the camera arrived there... ta-dah! everything was working perfectly
like nothing has happened. Then the technician supposed that "a coil
somewhere in a motor was not contacting properly" (those were the vague
words he reported me) "and then the vibration during transport moved the
coil enough for making contact again. It could happen once in a million
times, and it could repeat again soon or never again". Those were more
comments by the Pentax technician, as reported by my friend. The his K10d
worked perfectly for 3-4 months again and then, a few days ago, the problem
showed up again. This time he tried shaking the camera, then shaking it more
energetically... nothing happens and the shutter is still stuck. So at the
end I cannot help you so much, as the problem has not been solved yet. I
believe my friend has just shipped the camera agan to Pentax service in
Italy.

Cheers,

Dario

it seems my k10d died on me today. but perhaps some of you can help
diagnose it.

so, after a normal shot, the mirror just stayed up (the curtain closed).
the camera works normal otherwise (albeit slow) - you can review the
photos and set things in menus

you cannot shoot obviously, and you here the sound from the camera
that sounds a little as a focusing sound from a 16-50 2.8 lens crossed
with the regular sensor cleaning at power-up routine (which also works
normally)

any ideas? i'm guessing that the shutter died (it is well over 50k
anyway), but i'm hoping it could be something with the mirror, that
could be fixed more easily, perhaps by a non-pentax service (we don't
have one in serbia)

thanks for any ideas,
luka

I don't have any SLR zooms at the moment. I've only ever owned one, and that's

When I saw the print at a local exhibit of Magnum photographers it was
going for only $8000 Cdn. Everything else (including Arnold, Erwitt,
Capa - D-day prints not less - was going for about $2000-$4000). This
was about 5 years ago. I guess it would have been a good investment.

One thing that amazed me (and you don't get a sense of it in the small
web version that you linked to) is that the boy with the bottles is
~not~ at all sharp. He should have had his AF on...

Way to Go, Stef! Pics here look good! Enjoy watching the progress of young
talent--and he's got talent! Must be fun for you, Cotty, to have your son
with you on shoots, giving him helpful tips here and there. You know, the
father & son thing. Also, a few days ago, I caught that prom video, you had
posted on your video site. Stef's really quite handsome, isn't he? Anyway,
congrats on a great start to the portfolio. Cheers, Christine

I know some of you like to follow my lad's progress, and to keep it on
topic he was weaned on an *ist DS and still uses it as 2nd camera. Ahead
of studying photography at A level in September, he's started on a
course of building a sports portfolio and I managed to get him into an
English football game last week, Reading v Wolverhampton. Here he is
looking the part:

Only there for the first half (45 mins) in an uneventful game, here are

I like colours in the first one but I agree with Jack that it might be
better as a panorama. There just seems to be too much blank water in
the foreground despite the reflected light path.

I wasn't sure about the second one but after several viewings I find
that I really like it. The symmetrical composition and high key
rendering works well. I might be tempted to crop it slightly at the
bottom.

No. 3 also works well. The bright colour of the shirt and the low
contrast background focuses attention to the foreground particularly
well.

The last one is my least favoured. I don't think the blurred shape on
the horizon helps. It's more of a distraction.

Yep the pano's a great suggestion. You mean the blonde didn't do much for
you in the last one? :-) Big cheers, Christine

#1 is about as well done as possible what with the lack of either sky or
foreground detail. A panorama might have been another choice.(?)

#3 is interesting. I'm not sure..is that a couple enjoying the scenery?
The low contrast and style of both 2 and 4 don't really grab me.

He has a good eye. It helps that soccer involves a lot of action, but you have
to be able to anticipate it, capture it, and then select the right shots while
editing. Now if he can figure a way to get action shots at more sedentary
sports like cricket or chess, he will truly demonstrate that he is mastering
the craft.

Thank you, Sandy.

I grew up about 5-10 miles from locations shown in pictures 4 and 5.
Picked spuds and hauled loads to starch factories -- although not the
one in the picture.

Just thought it would be worth sharing this purely for interest.

Pentax-M 135/3.5 on my wife's Panasonic G2. Airbus 380 taken at the
Farnborough airshow last weekend.

Works well if a teeny bit soft - don't know whether that's the lens, my
inability to focus manually or a bit of shake / movement. Of course, on the
Micro 4/3 system it's equivalent to 270mm. I'll get round to doing some
controlled tests one day.

Karin got a nice bit of foreground interest in this one during the Red
Arrows' display:

That was taken with the Panasonic 14-42 lens.

Modesty maybe; or maybe disappointment that the actual images don't match the
ones in his mind. Getting those to converge is what practice is all about.
Perfectionism and discouragement are the pitfalls.

These are very good. He's got a good eye and good timing.

Excellent! A big improvement. The amber color of the sky gives an ominous air
to the pic.
