Big thanks, Brian, for your hard work on the pug! It looks great. Kudos to
Brian & Steve for their very clever and funny pictures! Made me giggle.
All of the nature/landscape pictures are beautiful--colors just lovely!
Love Dan's color work in his flower picture. Have to say Ken's picture is
one of more elegant cormorant pictures I've seen. Quite nice there. Nice
job, John, on the color correction on the Great Wall of China. Wow, that
must have been some trip! Love the bubbles, Bob W. Great work everyone!
Big cheers, Christine

G'day' all.

Well, a smaller gallery than for the past few months but an enjoyable
one just the same - and several people took the opportunity to submit to
the Open Gallery, so that was good.

The prize for the most innovative interpretation of the theme (not that
there is a prize, mind) must go to Steve - difficult to deny that it's
right on topic, even though no Kodachrome was injured in its production.

You'll find the gallery here:

http://pug.komkon.org/

I'm also taking the opportunity to re-post this image from the January
PUG. It's not officially part of the April gallery but it certainly
conforms to the theme!

http://pug.komkon.org/11jan/slides/JM-Kodachrome.html

Next up: May - Found Objects (now that's a theme that opens up lots of
possibilities)

Submit here:

http://pug.komkon.org/submit/

Submission Guidelines here:

Remember there are now increased image size limits (max. pixel size 800

Lovely bird portrait, Liz.
In my opinion, a shot like this taken in the wild is always ethically
dubious, in contrast to one shot under controlled conditions like you
have done. If shot in the wild, the burden of evidence is always on
the photographer to convince the audience that no harm came to the
animal. Including imprinting.

Throw that back to the purists and see how they handle it. :-)

It's not a cormorant but I was happy to get a chance to photograph a baby
great horned owl at the local wildlife center today. He'll be with the
center until about August when he's old enough to fend for himself.

I looked at it again this morning, and decided to upload it anyways:

That type of photo manipulation isn't my normal style, which I guess is a
good reason to try it. And I forgot to thank you for the suggestion.
Suggestions for things that I wouldn't normally do is exactly the reason
that I post photos to the list.

It's not the sort of thing that I'd think of doing either but it works
well here. Very subtle. I think I prefer it to the original - adds a
bit of mystery to the subject.

For those of you are FB friends, you've already heard about this

Our power went off at about 1:00 am Tuesday morning. We went for my
IV therapy Tuesday and when we returned, a great neighbor/friend had
drained old gas, cleaned and got our generator started, giving us
lights and TV. The windstorm had also taken out our cable service,
and this same friend bought and installed a digital TV antenna so we
could at least have over the air reception.

Just shows a how great it is to have good neighbors/friends

Very nicely executed, great exposures given the D-range and zero
visible stitching artefacts.

Yes, I think that's a distinct improvement.

The only minor adjustment I'd make is to slightly lighten the shadow areas

For those of you are FB friends, you've already heard about this

Our power went off at about 1:00 am Tuesday morning. We went for my IV
therapy Tuesday and when we returned, a great neighbor/friend had drained
old gas, cleaned and got our generator started, giving us lights and TV.
The windstorm had also taken out our cable service, and this same friend
bought and installed a digital TV antenna so we could at least have over the
air reception.

Just shows a how great it is to have good neighbors/friends

Good point. I just tweaked the color balance and did a little work on

I think I dialed this version in a little better, and learned a bit more

If you know how to prefocus and know the flow of the events, you can
do fine with a P&S. Megazooms or superzooms are usually P&S with
bigger lenses.

What kind of action? If it's predictable, such as Agility or Flyball,
just prefocus on where you know something interesting will happen and
learn how much shutter lag needs to be accommodated.
For this, pretty much any SLR will be fine. A friend of mine shot
Agility with an istD up until a year or so ago. He never printed bigger
than 4x6, and the camera was fine for the purpose.
OTOH, I recall my K10 not being able to AF fast enough to keep up with
my dogs at play. I think I moaned about it on list one time and Wendy
Beard sent me a file of one of her Belgians running straight at the
camera with perfect focus.

I think she was shooting a Canon 1D at the time.

I'm not sure if the K5 is fast enough to keep up with the dogs or not,
but I suspect not. I don't think Pentax is quite there yet, but I am
prepared for the pleasant surprise that it will keep up.
I'm pretty sure that the mid range Canons such as the 7D will, and the
D7K that I played with seemed very quick as well. I think if the wants
to do dogs at play, one of those cameras might be a better choice, the
7D in particular has some very nice features in the AF department that
make it very desirable if fast AF of moving things is required.

Hope this helps

If you put the TC on the camera, the bellows should mount, and you wouldn't

well TC plus bellows would be odd, but really i just wanted a nicer

And here I thought this was about moonshine...

Normally this means being a distance away from the stage.

A) My first thought is to use the A70-210, set the ISO to 400 or 800,
and use the on-camera flash. (Body is the K-x.)

B) Of course softer light would be preferable. I have a classic
Sunpak 611 available. With a GN of 160 and setting the ISO @ 400,
even with a tissue over the head for some diffusion I can get
plenty of DOF.

C) Then again, a *dedicated* flash with a bounce panel might be best,
but that would shorten my shooting distance. I really don't want to
crank the ISO past 800, just to maintain image quality. What flash,
Pentax brand or other, would you suggest?

A? B? C? Other?
Additional thoughts?

I wouldn't worry about going somewhat above ISO 800. The K-X has pretty
good high ISO qualities. Depending on the lighting situation, you may
be able to get by without any flash.

This was done with a K-X at ISO 3200 - post-processed in LR3.

It's not the sort of thing that I'd think of doing either but it works

She needs a camera, that will react quickly to presing the release

can shoot moving dogs at a distance. Shoe doesn't min buying a DSLR. I

The only thing I can think of is, if you visited the PUG recently the
March gallery would still be in your local hard disk cache. Re-loading
from the server should replace the March gallery with the April one.
That works for me (I always see the previous gallery when I upload the
new one until I do that).

Anyway, I see from a later post that you eventually found it.

It does, but I don't live in Montreal. I live in Toronto. It rains here, too.

However, rain is just wet - I don't mind that at all. It's ~cold~ and
wet that I abhor. So fenders go on in the winter (for the salty slush
that's a permanent feature of grey Toronto winters). They go on for
the first cold (sub 10C) rain in October or November and come off
around mid-March to early April, once I figure that, even if it rains,
it's mild enough that I don't mind so much getting wet.

> I have fenders but they don't rattle.  Maybe you just have cruddy fenders?

These strap on to the seat stays and front fork - no other hardware to
fasten them:

http://mondociclismo.blogspot.com/2010/01/welcome-to-canada.html

They're meant for road racers for training rides in the rain - strap
on, then immediately off again for the next dry day. They rattle.

Depends on the bike, but clearance is often a problem. I can't put
full fenders on my track bike, but there are some partial fenders that
will fit my frame. On one of my old frames, a very vertical Cyclops
track bike, only a "rat-tail" attached to the seatpost would fit.
Some messengers use beaters for the winter months, and most of those
will fit full fenders. They make such a huge difference in the slush

I have 3/4 fenders designed to be easily strapped on and off road
bikes - they attach to the seat stays in the back and the fork in the
front. Not nearly as good as full fenders, they're still a huge
improvement over nothing at all:

http://mondociclismo.blogspot.com/2010/01/welcome-to-canada.html

I don't know why I feel so much faster without them. Lack of noise,
and perhaps better aerodynamics. Most likely just psychological.

Nice!

My bike is still in pieces in my basement as I work through a project.
It'll be a couple weeks yet before I get a chance to experience this

Seeking input on configuration

2011-04-07 Thread Collin Brendemuehl
In 3 weeks I'm going to be doing the still work @ a conference.

Sincerely,

Collin Brendemuehl

Thanks Larry.
All true.
But non photographers often use compact cameras with a lot of shutter lag. The
picture aren't taken before the subject is long gone. She obviously wants
instant action. To me that means SLR/DSLR. But some megazooms might do the
trick too? I geuss a K-r would be a nice choise too.

It is kinda weird when you think about it. I had a short term blackout
today. From about 1:30 to 2:00 am in the morning the power went out in
the entire town because of the defect at the local electrical
substation.

I think everybody was worried about it because no one knew what will
happend next on the day before I was reading an article about that
Germany is not well prepared for a long term blackout (long term
meaning several weeks).

The weird thing is, in those moments you really realize how depended
you are on electricity, the internet and communication. Which all
would not work with out energy.

So I'm glad that you are okay. I hope the power will be restored soon.

reason to try it. And I forgot to thank you for the suggestion. Suggestions
for things that I wouldn't normally do is exactly the reason that I post photos

I think my favorite version of the photo is still the plain B&W.

I'm inclined to agree. In the new, manipulated version, the color of
the "whites" of the eye make him appear jaundiced. I realize it's
probably the same as the color version, where it looks fine, but the
B&W face accentuates the warm color of the eyeball.

Good point. I just tweaked the color balance and did a little work on exposure
compensation, dodging and burning.
I think I dialed this version in a little better, and learned a bit more about
the limitations of my skill in photo manipulation.

Submission Guidelines here:

http://pug.komkon.org/general/autosubmit.html

Remember there are now increased image size limits (max. pixel size 800
x 800; max. file size 300k) - see the submission guidelines for full

not too hard to get good shots of that, at least outdoors:

The technique is simply to prefocus on the jump, and then it's just a
matter of timing. Keeping both eyes open helps. You can pick it up
quickly, and any current DSLR with a 200 or 300mm kit lens should do
fine. Depends on how close you can get, and how big or small the dogs
are. That picture's from my K10D with Tamron 70-300 at 220mm; the
dog's small (8 lb) but we were in our own yard and I could get close.

But dogs running around in "free play" is a different matter. Forget
Larry's "first time," I still get few good shots after years of
trying. The K10D autofocus just won't keep up with the dogs, at least
not the fast sort that my wife favors. I know the newer models are
significantly better, but whether they are good enough to lock on to a
running dog, I cannot say.

I recommend cats.

I'm inclined to agree. In the new, manipulated version, the color of
the "whites" of the eye make him appear jaundiced. I realize it's
probably the same as the color version, where it looks fine, but the
B&W face accentuates the warm color of the eyeball.

Thanks for your efforts on the PUG Brian.

Submission Guidelines here:

http://pug.komkon.org/general/autosubmit.html

Remember there are now increased image size limits (max. pixel size 800
x 800; max. file size 300k) - see the submission guidelines for full
details.

Does the TC have the contacts for the A mount lenses? If not, then it won't
work. If it does, it may just be that the contacts are dirty, or have corroded
where the spring and ball bearings meet inside, especially if it hasn't been
used for a while.

If you put the TC on the camera, the bellows should mount, and you wouldn't
have Auto exposure anyways.

Shutter lag tends to be a function of autofocus speed. Shutter lag can be
pretty much eliminated if she can prefocus, hit the AF button and then click
the shutter. Or, use the AF-C mode.

If autofocus is an issue, and she get's Pentax she'd definitely want either a
K-r or K-5.

What is her budget? How often does she need to do these photos? Could you go
and try a few and see which of your gear works, and get a better idea of what
she needs?

A lot of it is just going to boil down to skill, and practice. Throwing money
at the issue can make up for some, but not all, lack of skill. Chances are that
even most of the people on this list, which on average has pretty high
photographic skills, wouldn't get great shots their first time taking photos of
dogs in action. She may also want to get something along the lines of a monopod
or a Bushhawk.

Re: PESO: Orphaned Baby Great Horned Owl

2011-04-07 Thread AlunFoto
Lovely bird portrait, Liz.
In my opinion, a shot like this taken in the wild is always ethically
dubious, in contrast to one shot under controlled conditions like you
have done. If shot in the wild, the burden of evidence is always on
the photographer to convince the audience that no harm came to the
animal. Including imprinting.

Throw that back to the purists and see how they handle it. :-)

Actually, I find it hard to submit as much as 10 a week -- since they
either have to be something I took before the summer of 2004 or
this year... as I was in darksideland as to camera _bodies_ though took
a lot with Pentax lenses. according to the rules in the
submission form , they have to be taken with a Pentax camera... a third
party lens could be used.

For the record - for those of you who don't know how old I am... I have
ten photos in the gallery now... and, like you Dan, I
have 3 hanging out in the ready to review.
