I'm starting to think about shoes like that, more for the lower heels that make
you land further forward on the foot. Mainly because one of my heels has been
sore lately and running down a 10% gradient on tarseal will not be helping.

I've just entered another half marathon, a repeat of one I did last year. I'm

Terminator 2 was on TV here in the weekend. In an early scene where Arnie is

Can we instead discuss why somebody who one might have thought would have been
a stickler for precise terminology chose to wrap the word royal in quotes?

It is, indubitably, a royal wedding. Just because somebody isn't part
of _your_ royal family (should you have one) doesn't make him less royal.
And whether or not you believe a royal family _should_ exist, it's hard
to argue that in fact they (and their ranks and titles) don't exist.

Personally I'll be only too happy when Saturday rolls round, and (most of)
the world resumes some semblance of normal life.

Nope, that's an old wives' tale. The Arthritis Foundation and others
have done numerous long-term studies on runners and found absolutely
no connection between knee (or any other joint) problems and running.
My father never ran at all for sport or fitness and his knees were
shot by the time he was 50. I'm approaching that age with fine knees
even after 14 marathons and more shorter races than I can count.

Interesting, humorous too:

"The light blue pad wedged between the end of the flash capacitor and
the bottom frame conducts heat away from the capacitor to cool it down
during flash-intensive shooting."

"The sensor has a special glass cover that turns red when viewed at an
angle. Neat!"

The problem I have is that "general wisdom" on exercise changes every
five years. I try to run 3-4 times a week for about 5k distances. I
use the other 4-3 days for weights. I have little doubt that biking
is better on the joints, but I just hate it too much to do it
regularly. In the winter I use the elliptical machine because I also
don't like running in the cold. It takes some pounding off the legs
as well. I figure my diet is a far greater challenge to me than my
exercise program.

I much prefer biking to running for the aforementioned reasons. The current

At first, I thought it was water with back-splashes from objects
dropping into it.
With the title as a hint, it became clear.
The calm water is a unique contrast to the stumps.
Well caught!

note the date format "2011/2011-04-17" -- the slash here is telling you
it's going to create both a 2011 folder and a 2011-04-17 folder _within_

Panorama How To (with kittens :D)

2011-04-26 Thread Timber
Hi List,

As some of you asked how to do Panoramas here's my little tutorial to
start with:

First of all you need:
- A tripod with a head that can turn 360 degrees (full circle) around
it's Horizontal axis. I don't really recommend the use of ballheads as
they tend to move freely in other directions as well...
My setup is: Giottos MT 9361 + MH 5001

- A wide angle lens. The KitLens is perfectly fine to start with
(kittens are not) but later on you might want to get a Ultra Wide Angle
lens, like the Sigma 10-20, Pentax DA 10-17 fisheye or the Samyang 8mm
Fisheye. The wider the lens the less picture you need to take -> makes
life easier. Just an example: @18mm you need 12 pictures in each row
(every 30 degrees), at least 3 rows + nadir and zenit. That equals 38
pictures. @8mm Fisheye you only need 1 row of 4 pictures and a Zenit and
Nadir. That's 6 pictures. Zenit and Nadir is the all the way down and
all the way up pictures.
My setup is: Pentax DA L 18-55 kitlens for the Pentax K-r

- A panoramic head attachment that allows you to rotate the camera with
the rotation's center being exactly at the center of the front lens
(called No Parallax Point). There are various options for this, most
commonly the Nodal Ninja is used. If you just want to try Panorama
photography, if it's your cup of tea or not, then I would advice to make
your own version from a couple pounds. It won't be as precise as the
Nodal Ninja and you might not be able to do interiors with it easily,
but it wouldn't cost you 200+ GBP or $300+ ... I would say for very
occasional Panorama works or for the learning process a DIY pano-head
will do. I made mine based on Peter Loud's Nodal Samurai
( http://www.peterloud.co.uk/nodalsamurai/nodalsamurai.html ).
My setup: DIY Pano-head :)

So once you have all the setup together then find a good spot for the
picture. To begin with panoramas I'd recommend large, open places first
as the less space you have the more obvious the non-precision of the
head will be. For example with my head and the kitlens doing interiors
requires at least 2 more rows for the perfect results.

What you need to create the panorama is enough pictures to have enough
overlapping where the stiching software can blend the pictures. The more
the overlapping the better the results will be. Sometimes the software
does the job fully but sometimes you need to help it with giving control
points manually. If you've done enough pictures with loads of
overlapping the it won't be a problem. So I say spend a bit more time
with the taking the pictures than spending hours to add control points
or worst case scenario, abandon your project because the lack of
overlaps. "Fail to plan and you plan to fail."

The software I use is PTGui for Windows. I found a similar program for
Ubuntu, called Hugin, but it's just not that good as PTGui.
Unfortunately PTGui is not free (unless you do warez... :P), but it has
a demo version you can try which adds Watermarks...

Using the PTGui is pretty simple. Load the pictures, let the software
align them and create the panorama! :D

Then when you render your panorama there are various options to make the
panorama, the most common is to create a spheric panorama that you can
use to create a Quicktime VR-Cube where you can look around, or the one
I posted earlier is called "Little Planet"

If you have questions feel free to ask :) but as I am a beginner on this
field (made only 4-5 panos so far) I might not be able to go into deep
technical details :)

Happy Panoraming! :D

DOF is tempting, but so is 50mm sharpness.
And so is carrying less gear. The KX is such a tank!

I recommend you toss a coin, choose a body and lens at random, shoot
with what you took and learn from the experience. That last bit is the
important part, btw.

I used to agonize over "The Right Choice", over analyze and waste brain
budget. Now I tend to select what I feel like at that moment, possibly
combinations I hadn't tried before, even if they don't seem to make
sense. Or I resort to my faves. Whatever will get me out the door.

But analyze during editing and post-processing. Look at what you brought
home and think about the results. Next time you'll know better what to take.

2011-04-26 Thread Jeffery Johnson
Thank you all for the advice that you have given and sorry this is so short
seeing as you Stan wrote out a lot of information. I really have no plans of
spending an arm and a leg on the lenses. One of the main reasons is, well to
be honest, I just can't afford it. Well I have to get off here and head on
to work. If I end up getting the lenses I will report back on them and it
will probably be the weekend before I experiment with them to see how well I
am going to be able to use older lenses.

Again thanks so much it is truly appreciated...

Subject: Re: Advice

Apologies in advance if I am telling you something you already know . . .

There are at least 3 questions you should ask when thinking about a used
lens. The first question is the one you are asking here: will this lens work
on my camera? And it is a good question! Three are more than a few of us who
got carried away with a super eBay deal on a Pentax lens, forgetting to note
that the lens is an older screw-mount that requires an adapter.

>From others' replies it sounds like there is a good chance that these are
appropriate lenses. However, next you need to ask "do I want this lens on my
camera?" There are at least two reasons that you might not want to buy and
use a lens that fits on our camera. First, if the front or (even worse) the
rear lens elements are scratched, then any images you take are going to be
somewhat degraded. Depending on how bad the scratching, how much image
degradation, maybe you can live with it for a while, but definitely don't
pay much if anything because you will be replacing those lenses soon.
Second, the more serious issue is whether or not the lens shows signs of
fungus growth on the lens elements. This hasn't been discussed on the PDML
recently, but it is something you need to know about. Open the aperture and
look through the lens, both from the back and the front. Point the lens
towards a white or off white wall if possible. Oftentimes it helps if you
look through at a slight angle rather than straight through. If you see fine
tracings like a small spider-web on the inside lens surfaces, run, do not
walk, but run away from that purchase. Don't even accept such a lens as a
gift. They are virtually impossible to clean (though a good technician a can
dismantle the lens and give it a try, but that is expensive). Worse, the
fungal spores may propagate to other lenses in your bag/storage closet. It
isn't likely, but why take the chance? Unless it is a very rare and
potentially valuable lens worth the time and effort to try and clean it,
don't mess with an infected lens.

Third question: if the lens fits (and seems like it may be useful), and it
is reasonably scratch-free and totally fungus free, you may still want to
pass if the price is too high. Too high doesn't depend on what you can
afford; if you have $50 to burn and are offered a $25 lens, that price may
still be too high. Price/value is determined by scarcity, condition, and
utility. The scarcity and condition are tough unless you have been carefully
tracking multiple markets including eBay and others, and unless you have
seen enough examples of what people call "like new", "good condition", etc.
Hopefully the lenses you are interested in are available through KEH. My
working rule-of-thumb when I was more actively involved in buying and
selling lenses is that I would not pay more than 80% of the KEH "bargain"
price for the lens. In other words, if KEH had a "bargain" SMC 50/1.4 for
$100, I would not pay anyone else more than $80 for the same lens in "good"
condition. I would rather deal with KEH, pay a little extra, and be
confident that I was getting good merchandise that could be easily returned
in the odd event that I found something wrong.

Hope this helps . . .

Re: Which body/lens?

On 4/26/2011 00:06, Collin Brendemuehl wrote:

Next weekend when I shoot a conference in the Chicago area.

I'm taking the DSLR and shooting everything in raw.
Will probably use 2 lenses: A35/2 and A70-210/4.
Maybe the FA50/1.4 depending on room size.
Flash is a Sunpak 611. Plenty of light,
with a little Westcott thingie on it for softness.

But I'm also going to shoot b&w film. And this forces a choice.
(That's the question.)
I'd like to use just 1 lens on the b&w body.
The body will be either the SP1000 or the KX. With a small flash.
(there should be one laying around here somewhere)
I'm thinking ... just 50mm on the film? Or maybe the 21mm?
DOF is tempting, but so is 50mm sharpness.
And so is carrying less gear. The KX is such a tank!

Lens options are: FA50/1.4, A35/2, 21/3.5 m42.

Sincerely,

Collin, I suggest taking KX and using A35/2 for moderate fast lens. It
is also faster than the 21 lens. Also you would be able to swap lenses
between your DSLR and the KX if necessary. So my suggestion is FA 50, A
35 and A 70-210 and ... a body cap if you would have to e.g. put your A
35/2 on your DSLR whereas you would have to cover your KX mount with
something.

In fact, it seems to me that with 70-210 on your DSLR and 35 mm on your
KX you may be covered nicely. FA 50/1.4 may be useful for backup and/or
really low light situations if you would not be able to use flash for
any reason.
