My design is a two-sided, tri-fold card (3-1/2 x 6) with 3 small
portraits on one side and a fine-art landscape on the other with
room for the appropriate text along the bottom edge on both sides. It
folds up to the size of a standard business card.

I created an image template in Photoshop that I can import into my
word processor. I figured out how to import the template twice so that
the images on each side line up properly. I export the word processor
document as a PDF that I can print directly from Acrobat Reader.

I'm creating the PDF file on my laptop transferring the PDF file to
this computer that has the color laser printer using a thumb drive.
Eventually I'll get my network transferred back here to Raleigh and
will be able to print to the color laser directly from the laptop.

In the meantime ...

What I want to know is there anything I particularly need to do to the
images themselves before saving them as a jpeg to import into my word
processor? My first test run on regular paper looks pretty dark, with
the shadows kind of blocked up.

Would profiling the printer help since I'm not printing from Photoshop?

I've not tried this so it's a best-guess: I'd say profiling the printer
would help to get the images adjusted *before* you save them for
importing into the WP. True you aren't printing directly from PS, but
you are printing images that came from PS so that much can be
pre-compensated at least.

Do you have a colorimeter that can read the images off the printed cards?

Re: Semi-OT: Preparing photos to print on a color laser

2011-05-04 Thread Igor Roshchin

I would recommend couple of possibilities to streamline this process
1. You can save as a PDF from the Photoshop.
It is not the best PDF, and it is usually rather large in size,
but it might be better than do an intermediate step.

2. Consider a free PDF printer software. I use doPDF:
http://www.dopdf.com/ . It installs as a printer, to which
you can print from _any_ software, - and it creates a usable PDF.

HTH,

Igor

I bought a color laser printer a while back to print business cards.
The laser printer duplexes and I intend to print on 110# Ivory Card

Would profiling the printer help since I'm not printing from
 Photoshop?

Brian:

It is an excellent gallery! Thanks for all your efforts in putting it
together, and for taking on the special refusal Pug as well. I really
appreciate the quality and quantity of your efforts on our behalf.

The May Pug is full of interesting and effective images. My personal
favorites are:

Blue Jay Feather by Ken Waller -- excellent detail and composition.

Assimilation by George K. Vlachou -- How did you see this, let alone
capture it so well?

Found in Maine by Ann Sanfedele -- An image with both pathos and humor.

Just Garbage by Bruce Walker -- I would never look at that object,
let alone see such an impressive photograph hiding there.

Head by Dag Thrane -- wonderful composition. The effect of the rust
and the peeling paint really makes it more interesting and effective.

Disembodied Scream with Arrow by Christine Aguila -- a surprising and
interesting find, well rendered.

Thanks and congratulations to all the submitters for such a compelling
group of images.

Pentax K-r and AA batteries.

2011-05-04 Thread Don Guthrie

I used nothing but lithium batteries in my K200d. I know I get like 1000
Raw or Raw+ from each set. I think I bought 5 packs in 2010.

Now I have a new K-r and i bought the adapter to use liths and I use the
rechargeble as a backup. The K-r does have the movie mode and it does
suck juice faster along with Live View. That may change my mind.

Never tired eeneloops because I can never keep up with charging and

Upcoming North Carolina activities - besides GFM

2011-05-04 Thread Mark Roberts
As usual, I'll be coming down early for GFM and staying a while after.
As *not* usual I'll have activities other than shooting photos to
attend to:

On Thursday June 9 I'll be giving a presentation for WildSouth.org
(www.wildsouth.org) on nature photography in general and photography
in that area specifically. Festivities begin at 5:30 and will run
until around 7:30. It's going to be held at the Westglow Spa
(www.westglowresortandspa.com), which is just outside Blowing Rock,
between Blowing Rock and Grandfather Mountain.

On Saturday June 11 I'll be leading a nature photography hike in the
Lost Cove Wilderness Study Area (also near Blowing Rock) for Wild
South. I'll have exact time and starting location soon.

And some time during the week (June 6-11) I'll be doing a book signing
(of my Blue Ridge High Country book) at Black Bear Books in Boone, NC
(www.blackbearbooks.com) - they've just moved to the Boone Mall at
1180 Blowing Rock Rd (AKA Rt 221) this past weekend, so the location
shown by Google Maps is inaccurate right now.

These events are all free, so I hope some PDML people can make an
appearance!

It's amazing how painfully irritating 3 stitches inside a lip can be.

I don't know how many stitches I had but it required a subcutaneous

It's amazing how painfully irritating 3 stitches inside a lip can be.

I've had my lips stitched up twice, each time without anaesthetics. First
time was at school as a result of not running away from someone. Second time
was when I tripped and landed badly, pushing a front tooth right through the
lip. Killed the tooth.

It's also amazing how far I overestimated my manliness.

That 2nd time for me was so painful I didn't notice that I'd also cracked

Anyway Mark, glad there were no complications, and I look forward to

If you look at the highest-rez version available (via Flickr), it's
about 11MP, and there you can see the focus is clearly on Hillary. I
think the Prez being in the thirds is just a coincidence.

I do agree that it will receive a gazillion prizes, because it's been

that news editors didn't know what they were doing. Am I cynical
enough? :-)

I will point out that the White House has said they cannot/will not

they could have been watching American Idol.

Blue Jay Feather by Ken Waller -- excellent detail and composition.

Assimilation by George K. Vlachou -- How did you see this, let alone

Samsung autoleaks 300mm f/2.8 lens

2011-05-04 Thread Miserere
http://www.mirrorlessrumors.com/samsung-itself-leaks-a-300mm-f2-8-xf-ed-lens-on-youtube/

I suspect this is a lens that would have been introduced for their
Pentax-cloned GX series of DSLRs (see? it's not and OT post), but
never did because they moved away from mirrors and Pentax. The lens
focuses in the same direction as Pentax lenses, i.e., the correct way,
while Sammy's NX lenses focus in the opposite direction, i.e., the
wrong way.

I wonder what other lenses they were working on... Some think Sammy's
upcoming NX 85mm f/1.4 was initially designed for K-mount.

So let me ask the question: If Samsung had started developing their
own line of lenses for K-mount, would you guys have been happy? The
Sammy lenses I've used so far have been quite nice; those that I've
seem pictures from online seem equally good. Wouldn't Pentax have
benefited from having Samsung producing higher end lenses such as the
85mm f/1.4?

I'm curious to hear what y'all think.

Re: Samsung autoleaks 300mm f/2.8 lens

2011-05-04 Thread Larry Colen
Pentax users would definitely benefit from more lenses on the market.
I could certainly use a good 85/1.4.

Fascinating. Of course, it might never see production. I've seen cases
in which a manufacturer accidentally showed photos of an exciting
product never intended for production. It draws attention and
generates buzz.

I wonder how much of a market there might be for a 300/2.8 for a
mirrorless system. I'd guess not much at the moment (unless it were
also compatible with an SLR system) but possibly in the future.
Curiouser and curiouser.

PESO: Horse Trainer

From the Big Apple Circus:

This image was just accepted into the Pentax Gallery (my 63d image).
It was previously rejected, perhaps because of noise. I filtered it
through Neat Image, and this time made the grade.

As usual, Comments, Suggestions, Criticisms and Abuse are Welcome and
Encouraged.

Re: OT? Rule of thirds

2011-05-04 Thread David Parsons
I know you are kidding, but that is one of the very few modifications
that is ever done to his pictures. Everything he shoots goes straight
to the National Archives and nothing is ever deleted.

The documentary on Pete Souza was pretty interesting, and it's a tough
job following around someone with the kinds of obligations that the
President has.

has anyone else noticed that in the picture by Pete Souza of the
 White House
staff watching the attack on OBL, the president's eye is pretty much
 bang on
  the intersection of thirds?

I reckon that picture is going to feature among the major
 prizewinners in
all the press comps this year.

It's a great photo, but in my opinion it's the second-best of the
week. I found Michael Appleton's NY Times photo of the firefighters in
Times Square to be more compelling.

 http://lens.blogs.nytimes.com/2011/05/02/firefighters-gather-for-news-
 of-bin-laden/

yes, that's a great shot too.

Plus, Souza's photograph suffers from pixelated artifacts all over
 Hilary's papers... :-)

they could probably fix that in Photoshop

It´s not your fault, I´m just a bit backwards :-)

Logically, you are right. I´ll have to change it. There are a few other things
I´ll try to fix as well, like that fact that the address for a specific
pictures changes each time I update a gallery. Nice if you want to bookmark the
latest picture, but not if you want to refer to a picture even after an update.

Thanks Christine, Brian and Bruce.

When you have to choose between shabby and fearsome, the latter is
probably the best option.
I just hope we don't scare people of with this humorous look.
