You can't do that trip any more as the Southerner was stopped in 2002. I used to take that train to visit my dad in Timaru when I was in my teens. My experience of Dunedin is all from the past 10 years or so. I guess you won't have been to Larnach Castle as that would have been in the early stages of restoration back then. Re: OT: Stupid Google Maps
From: Stan Halpin A 3-second Google for Skyline Drive tells me that it is 105 miles long. Shouldn't be too tough to find strip maps with key intersections etc mileposted for both the Skyline and Blue Ridge ... Yeah. That's what I'm having to do. Google lets you select point A point B and will tell you how many miles it is and how long it will take to drive it. You can drag the points around and it will show you how much longer or shorter that makes the drive time. To a limited extent, I can force it to use certain routes. What I'm trying to do is plan the trip so I leave home, drive up to Front Royal down Skyline Drive to one of the camping areas on the first day. From there I want to proceed south along Skyline drive to the Blue Ridge Parkway all the way down to the southern end, camping along the way. I want to select distances that only have me driving for 5-6 hours. That will leave plenty of time for stopping and dawdling along the way. But I also want to select distances that will put me in the vicinity of another NPS campground along the Parkway when I'm done driving for the day. And I'm trying to figure out how many days total to allow for the drive doing it in 5-6 hour increments. I want to use the drive time feature in Google to do all that for me instead of having to calculate it myself. Google does fine for the leg up to Front Royal. I can force it to take the route I want to take, and even get it to follow Skyline drive to the first campground. And it does OK for the route from Cherokee back to Raleigh. But it just won't map Skyline Dr the Parkway for the middle segment. On Jun 6, 2011, at 11:55 AM, John Sessoms wrote: Google maps allows you to make routes and get driving directions by marking locations for Directions from here and Directions to here. I want to drive up to the north entrance to Shenandoah National Park's Skyline Drive and make my way all the way down to the southern terminus of the Blue Ridge Parkway down at Great Smokey Mountains National Park in Cherokee, NC. The most direct route is straight down Skyline Drive to the Blue Ridge Parkway, but Google won't have it. Does OK for the trip up to Front Royal, VA and for the trip back home from Cherokee, NC. I was able to click-and-drag the mapped route onto state and county roads, Google Maps then recomputed distances, times for me. I seem to recall that I had to put in extra way points to make this work smoothly . . . I have had lots of similar experiences--you also have to zoom in so the back roads show up, as well as the city side-streets. Cheers, Christine All good advice that I am following. You have to add a click and drag point between every intersection on the Parkway or Google will jump off to an adjacent highway. The problem I'm having is Google hates the Blue Ridge Parkway so much that I run out of points to click and drag. I've also tried Add Destination. You can force it to follow the Parkway if you add enough intermediate destinations that are between the intersections with other highways, but adding a destination is limited to the letters of the alphabet (i.e. you can only add 25 destinations to your starting point). I'm currently working on combining multiple maps with adding a whole bunch of intermediate destinations with click drag in between to see if I can get it to provide the information I want. I don't really need the map part, I know how to find Skyline Drive the Parkway. It's the times and distances I'm trying to work out, to figure how many days to allow and which camping areas to make reservations for. - No virus found in this message. What I've done on my trips down (and I've done several so far), is to keep a list of the campgrounds along the Blue Ridge Parkway. There is a list somewhere on the web (Google again) with all of them, and their milepost markings. I even printed it out in small print and put it in the map pocket on my motorcycle. From there, it's simply a matter of figuring how many miles you're doing in a day, and back-figure from there. From my recollection, doing 8 hours or so a day of travel, I was able to get from Harrisburg, PA to the Peaks of Otter (milepost 86) on the BRP in one day. From there to GFM (milepost 305 off of the BRP) was about 5-6 hours or so without rushing. And from there to the end of the BRP was about another 4-5 hours, again without rushing. Speed limit on Skyline Drive is lower than the BRP, and they do patrol it more. You're also more likely to get behind a slow-moving convoy of large RVs, so plan accordingly. Also, if you can bypass the town of Front Royal, you'll save a decent chunk of time. There's always a lot of traffic going through the town, and it's stop-and-go with traffic lights. -Mat -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.
Re: OT: Stupid Google Maps
From: John Francis There are a couple of things going on here. Obe is that Google tries to give you the fastest route between your origin and the destination, so you're likely to end up on interstate highways. If you force the route to go along Skyline drive (by dragging intermediate points), you'll see another one of the contributing factors. The driving directions get red-flagged with the message This road my be seasonally closed. I think the fastest route is the problem. Google's search engine (and that's what the Get Directions is) isn't adaptive enough to figure out that if someone selects two points at either end of a scenic byway, you're not looking for the fastest route. There's an option to Avoid highways and one to Avoid tolls. How about an option to Take scenic route? The red flag for This road my be seasonally closed doesn't bother me. I'm not planning a trip for when the roads will be closed, and I already knew about it. Having that additional information doesn't make the directions less useful. - No virus found in this message. Hi Ted*, First of all, I wish all the best to your Grandson and hopefully all this mystery sickness will be nothing more than a fading memory soon. The shot is good, it's well composed I like it. The moment, the framing and the feeling of the picture is just excellent. But the post process is just not good for me. I feel the picture way too oversaturated and you have a lot of 'HDR-Glow'. There are many HDR softwares around, which can create nice Tone Mapped pictures from Expo-Bracketed shots, but I haven't found any that would do the job properly. My method for HDR photos is a mix of using Photomatix / Lightroom / Photoshop and the workflow based on the workflow of Joel Grimes (who is famous for his HDR backgrounded portraits) with adding my own twists. But if you would share the original brackets (or was it in-camera HDR?) I would love to give it a try to post-process it. Hi, I had a very nice walk this Sunday at Brick Lane, London and made a little candid shot of a guy having a bit of break. Now the way I had to photo him was a bit funny as when I first stopped next to him he was looking at me a bit unfriendly (at least that's how I felt). Chris, Thank you for your comment. I am happy that you enjoyed the second one more; as that one also seems to tell me more. In fact, I was aware of those dividers and I have decided to leave them alone. My reasoning was to create a sense of depth; trying to isolate the objectified flowers amongst other things. That is to say, they should not to be seen like a museum specimen (with no distracting elements). The first, square composition was an attempt at the contrary direction. So, the busy background and the distracting foreground elements were intentional... to a degree :) In the end, I do benefit a lot by reading your comments and suggestions. Re: Shot from GFM this year
Peter as I stated earlier, I submitted this to the contest for fun The shot was done in camera in my K 7 on HDR2 setting so there is not a set of exposures. I did work with it a little in Lightroom but did not increase the saturation. I boosted the black level and also vibrance a little. I also boosted recovery and clarity sliders. Little bit of graduated on the foreground and sky and that was mostly it. I did have misgivings about the ghosting on the ridge so I did try to lighten the sky to reduce that some. Re: OT: Stupid Google Maps
John, There is a big Parkway arts crafts center just on the north side of Asheville. We got a Parkway map there and the mileposts on it would be your friends. Unfortunately the 35 mph speed limit is not to friendly. It seemed to take forever to drive up from Ashville to GFM on the Blue Ridge Parkway. The first time we came to GFM, we did it in the fog! Not good for a flatland driver like me. If I can't see the road on the horizon, I have to slow way down. Check for one of those maps. Regards, Bob S. -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.
Where are the rumors?
Isn't it about time for the rumors about the K5 replacement to start appearing? The K10 had a production run of 2 years but the K20 and K7 only ran for 1 year before being replaced. On that record the K3 (?) should be appearing soon - or at least start being talked about. I keep looking at the K5's low light performance (the only thing I'm not happy with in the K7). And then I think the next model should be even better, but I hate waiting. So where are the rumors about the next camera. What are the must have features that will sell it? Re: Where are the rumors?
Well not much rumours for Pentax. There is nothing about the K-line, all the rumours going around are focusing on the mirrorless systems of Pentax. One being APS-C (I do believe the NC-1 pictures floating around is the APS-C or 4/3 one) and one being a small sensor one (some says it's called Pentax Q) and one of them is rumoured to be based on the Auto 110 system (I bet that's the small sensor one) The companies in focus for rumours are: Sony - Nex C3, A35, 30mm macro lens and a new flash for the Nex are announced today, but there is more to come. A77, Nex 7 and one more camera will be announced soon, most likely the 7th of July (7/7 for the A77... cheeky :D) Panasonic - G3 is out and there is a rumoured GF3 with ultra small body, few pictures already floating the net so it's just matter of days to get announced Olympus - EPL3 and one real small camera to be announced soon Samsung - They are the main thread in the rumor mill. NX20, NX200 and 85 f1.4 will be announced soon. One the cameras might be a Leica M9 / Fuji X100 like and there is a rumoured square sensor mirrorless Medium Format like camera-box :) Nikon - not much, mirrorless will have smaller than 4/3 sensor (2.5-2.8x crop factor) Canon - Who cares? :) Holga - Open Source mirrorless camera project. Sounds interesting and a good idea. .t - Original Message - From: Leon Altoff leon.alt...@gmail.com To: Pentax-Discuss Mail List pdml@pdml.net Sent: Wednesday, June 08, 2011 10:52 PM Subject: Where are the rumors? The reason I haven't got a K-5 in my camera bag is financial, not technical. There are still some places where the ergonomics could be tweaked slightly, and a flip-out screen (as on the Nikon D5100) would be nice. Beyond that, it's not clear that Pentax sell into the right market for things such as wireless connectivity, dual SD slots, c. I doubt if a K-5 replacement is next on the Pentax front, anyway. As others have pointed out, a mirrorless camera system seems more likely to be the next product. Perhaps a simple call to the American Automobile Association would get you that information. I'd do it for you but I'm no longer a member. Re: Where are the rumors?
The K5 already offers so much that I feel a little guilty for not having taken advantage of all it's features. Looking anxiously forward to the rest of the adventure. To: Pentax-Discuss Mail List pdml@pdml.net Date: Wednesday, June 8, 2011, 12:52 PM Isn't it about time for the rumors about the K5 replacement to start appearing? The K10 had a production run of 2 years but the K20 and K7 only ran for 1 year before being replaced. On that record the K3 (?) should be appearing soon - or at least start being talked about. I keep looking at the K5's low light performance (the only thing I'm not happy with in the K7). And then I think the next model should be even better, but I hate waiting. So where are the rumors about the next camera. What are the must have features that will sell it? Or are we reaching the point where advancement is slowing simply because technology can't keep up? -- Leon -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions. -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.
