room is underground as well. Lake Eyre flight this afternoon

So far only 4 submissions for the August PUG.

Well, you learn something on this list every day. I always though that
"fender" was North American for "bumper" (when it's not Fender with a
capital F - then it's a guitar).

Chris
PS - what is American for bumper?

What is a bumper to you? (or you to a bumper... )

On this side of the pond, the bumper is the part below the lights that
would be the first thing to touch another car if you rear ended one.

GESO: Ice Day At The Zoo

2011-07-27 Thread Jeffery Johnson
I got up early this past Saturday morning and headed out to Radnor Lake and
then from there I went over to the zoo. This go around I packed a cooler
with water, soda, ice and a sandwich for lunch. When I arrived at the zoo 15
minutes after they opened the place was already getting busy. I had
forgotten that it was Ice Day at the zoo. They give all the animals special
frozen treats that are in frozen ice and they have different ice sculptures
here and there in some of the exhibit areas. They also had free ice cream
for the humans, a blowup water slide for the kids, ice cream eating contest
and a few other things. Over all minus the heat it was a rather pleasurable
day of taking some captures of some of the animals.

One of the Schmidt's Guenons:

H. I like the second one best. In the first it appears they're
just trying to get someone's attention. In the second, because they're
facing the camera, they're actually offering the hugs to someone.
They've gone from being just revelers to folks interacting with the camera.

Well, you learn something on this list every day. I always though that

Interesting. My personal fave is the third one (of the fellow jumping
up to try blocking the kick - he failed). I would have preferred that
the blocker was a bit sharper, but I'm happy enough that the kicker
was sharp.

In any event, I wouldn't have expected the only two expressing a
preference to like what almost ended up being a throw-away, added to
the gallery only at the last minute to give it a bit of "closure".

No matter. Glad you liked it. Thanks to all who looked and commented.

We just had a nice sunny 13°C today and after that snow it almost felt like
shorts & t-shirt weather. 95% of the snow and ice has melted away already.

But yes, bring on summer.

Oh yes, there are a few small colonies here and there, of several different
species. Mostly down south. A few weeks back we even had a juvenile emperor
penguin show up near Wellington. He's being nursed back to health as he was
suffering from the (comparative) heat, and will be released back into the wild
later.

Christine, we don't often get much snow in Christchurch. What we had the other
day is the most in about 15 years. Most of the snow in these parts falls at
higher elevations or further south. There's plenty of great skiing if you're
into that kind of thing.

Cheers,
Dave

Import Oddity

2011-07-27 Thread Bipin Gupta
Hello Bob, have you tried direct import from the K5 with a USB cable?
I would suspect your Card Reader or your SDHC Card itself. I have
found one instance where the contacts were bad.
Can you borrow a card reader from friends - everyone seems to have one
these days - and a new Extreme Sandisk SDHC card. I trust nothing but
Sandisk.
Finally if nothing works, reset your K5 to factory settings, shut
down, remove the battery 2 mins, insert back, on camera, take few
shots, then import the photo to your computer.
Good Luck friend till then.

It refers to the way some older Leica lenses respond to backlight at wide
apertures. They produce a kind of glowing soft-focus look.

My 35/1.4 often demonstrates it, for example in the recent pictures I shot
in another pub:
.

It's some kind of optical abberation, but when you've paid that much for a
lens you make a virtue of it.
