I didn't have tickets, but I headed downtown for a little walkabout anyway.
 I shot with the DA* 50-135mm, which I haven't used in a while; gosh, that's a
nice lens--heavy, but very nice. Hot and humid today, so I didn't stay as
long as I had intended. While shooting, I kept thinking, I can't wait for
fall--this would be so much more fun if it was cooler. On the way home, a
big black cloud rolled in, which the last two shots in the small gallery
depict. Pretty dramatic. It did end up raining, but nothing much to speak

Indeed, specifically with these pictures I am certain you would have

 Thanks Christine. And I'm pleased
that you like the design balance, since it was carefully
chosen. The pic is a Photoshop composite. The smaller,
apparently more distant bird was stripped out of another
shot. I wasn't trying to hide that, but I wanted to see if
anyone would pick up on it. Apparently not. Good to know.
The most important clue would be that both birds are in
focus, but the dof with a long lens would be hard to achieve
at a workable shutter speed. But probably not impossible.
Anyway, I had some fun putting it together, and I like the
 result.

Well, personally I had a Toyota Corolla (make 2004) that I received from
the dealership brand new. To say the least, it wasn't too successful a
car so much so that I was quite surprised given that it wasn't just any
car. Three years later I got another Corolla, this time made in Japan,
and it was a different beast all together. I am speaking about things
such as assembly gaps or plastics or cabin noise. Both drove well,
although both had an odd habit of getting their steering wheel out of
balance so that in order to go straight I had to turn the steering a bit
to the side.

The best company leasing car I drove so far was Kia C'eed (made in
Slovakia). I drove it for 2.5 years having clocked 55,000 km - no
problems whatsoever, it just worked and nicely too. Presently I drive
Peugeot 308 (made in France), which is a pampering and comforting car,
but it was the very first since 2004 (that Corolla was my first company
leasing car) that broke midway to work.

Thanks, Frank. The car was parked at a bit of an angle to the curb,
and I had to get close and use a wide lens, because there was a tree
with a fence around it alongside the car. [That's also why I show
only half the car]. I struggled with getting the car straight in the
viewfinder, and finally I decided (or perhaps rationalized) that if I
tilted it a bit as if it was climbing a hill, that might suggest the
power I was trying to depict. Any way, that's my story, and I'm
sticking with it. G

Re: PESO - Church of the Holy Donut

2011-08-08 Thread John Sessoms

From: Steven Desjardins

Krispy Kreme is big in the South, but DD is catching on. I still like
their coffee, but most of the locations down here are conveniences
stores where the donuts are delivered in the morning. I grew up about
a mile from an old style DD, and you could get them still warm if you
timed it right, which usually meant before noon.

One thing I've noticed lately is even the old style Dunkin Donuts seems
to be trucking in the doughnuts. Krispy Kreme still makes them there in
the store.

I have both a Krispy Kreme and an old style Dunkin Donuts a 10 minute
walk of my home; depends on which way I turn going out the front door.

That 10 minute walk is important - just enough exercise to burn off the
fat from two doughnuts. Otherwise, I can't afford to allow myself the
pleasure.

Re: GESO - Land Rover

2011-08-08 Thread P. J. Alling
Let's see the original Land Rover was built on a Jeep chassis. The last
vehicle that actually looked like a Land Rover was a Toyota Land
Cruser. Rover was sold to Ford, who beyond all expectations actually
improved Rover's quality, but Ford was unable to make a profit on Rover
so they sold it to Tata. So really there's not much about Rover that's
English at all...

there is a very nice range of native Micro-FourThirds prime lenses to
work with it (12/2, 14/2.5, 18/2.8, 20/1.7, 25/1.4, 45/2.8 Macro, and

never mind its ability to use nearly any other lens via adaptation.

The interchangeable lens, all electronic digital camera age is upon

Few PESOs by Boris and Galia

2011-08-08 Thread Boris Liberman
Hi!

During that trip to Upper Galilee recently, one of the evenings we
drove by the hills late afternoon and shot some landscapes. Also twice
I woke up early and went on hunting for light. So here are the PESOs
on these subjects:

http://pentax-ways.blogspot.com/2011/08/peso-2011-30-hill-of-galilee.html
(Galia and Boris)
http://pentax-ways.blogspot.com/2011/08/peso-2011-31-sun-is-rising.html (Boris)
http://pentax-ways.blogspot.com/2011/08/peso-2011-32-hills-of-galilee.html
(Boris)

A little point about the first two images (the same village shot by
Galia with K-7 and DA21 and Boris with K-7 and FA 20). No matter how I
tried I couldn't bring the color balance to match. So they look
somewhat different in this respect.

Be brutal and honest, as usual.

Thanks.

the build it solid - this thing is pretty darn excellent.

Glad you liked it. I played with a G3 for the first time just the
other day. It's a very interesting development from my G1 ... smaller
in the hand, tighter feeling, etc. Kind of a melding of the GF1 and G1
models in my experience. I expect it is a very good camera, and now
there is a very nice range of native Micro-FourThirds prime lenses to
 work with it (12/2, 14/2.5, 18/2.8, 20/1.7, 25/1.4, 45/2.8 Macro, and
45/1.8) and a good range of zooms from both Olympus and Panasonic,
never mind its ability to use nearly any other lens via adaptation.

The interchangeable lens, all electronic digital camera age is upon
us. I know no one agrees on what to call this new camera category with
half a dozen acronyms like EVIL, MILC, etc, but I call it Lens
Interchangeable - Viewfinder Electronic or LIVE.

as I had intended. While shooting, I kept thinking, I can't wait for
fall--this would be so much more fun if it was cooler. On the way home, a big
black cloud rolled in, which the last two shots in the small gallery depict.
Pretty dramatic. It did end up raining, but nothing much to speak of.

Anyway . . .

Here's the link to the gallery--this link is underneath the PAW photo as well.

Many really excellent shots in this gallery, Christine. My fave though
is the one you used to intro the gallery in your blog, #7 the two girls,
one kicking the water. I also quite like #2 (guy in falling water), and
for laffs #12. :)

Great composition, Dag. My only wish would be that a bit more of the

Re: Geso: Mexico

2011-08-08 Thread Bruce Walker
Rick, did you try using the filmstrip gallery? If you click on any
image, it expands onto a page of its own with a linear filmstrip of
images along the bottom. You can navigate forward/back by clicking on
the enlarged image or by choosing specific ones from the bottom strip.

Sasha: a very fine gallery. I was most impressed by the big indoor
waterfall fountain shot. Great stuff!
