Be careful what you wish for.

Historically, the dictatorial approach has rarely been successful. Paris may
be the one exception. Otherwise you have to think of Albert Speer and his
dreadful fantasies, or Brasilia, East German tower blocks, or the dreadful
stuff we put up here after the war. What is important is to have controls
which limit the craziness of developers.

Kevin McCloud made an interesting doco about Dharavi, the big slum in Mumbai
and how well that works as a place for people. I've been on the fringes of
Dharavi, and seen other 3rd world shanty towns, and the always make me think
of the way old European cities must have been at some point in the past. You
can still see the medieval (or earlier) shape of many of our cities. They
arose out of the hugger-mugger of organic rather than planned growth,
tempered by frequent disasters and rebuilds. After each rebuild the
multitude of property owners and other vested interests ensure that street
plans remain the same, even if buildings change. That is what has happened
each time London has been rebuilt and is part of the reason why it has
charm, and why you can still walk the streets that the Romans, and Chaucer
and Shakespeare, and Dickens walked, with the same names.

Very cute, though I think it would benefit a lot by cropping in a lot

Looks like my first car - although it wasn't purple and it wasn't a

Under the hood it looks a lot like my first car. An Austin America (aka
Austin 1300). I'd love to see a modern incarnation of the original mini,
not the bloated sesquimini, but 1500 lbs, and a modern 1300 cc motor
that'd get twice the power of the original, with better gas mileage.

Unfortunately there doesn't seem to be a market for fun to drive cars
that get 40MPG, so it would never get built.

Yes- I'm using JAlbum for the PUG (as did Scott). I wasn't entirely
happy with the Chameleon template because I wanted to be able to make
the images 'clickable' so that images larger than the browser window
could be shown full size in a separate window. This involved designing
a new template, which looks a bit like Chameleon but there's no
Chameleon code present. It works the way I want but I haven't yet
worked out how to make multi-page albums with it.

I'm not sure that JAlbum is the ideal tool for a 'professional' web site
but there are plenty of templates to play around with and many are
highly configurable. One that I like is Matrix, although I'm not keen
on its default settings. If you're prepared to tweak the options, you
can get a very attractive looking gallery.

For my own site I designed the interface from scratch. I'm reasonably
happy with it except that it's a bugger to update and the images are
smaller than I'd use if I was designing it now (700 x 467 for landscape
format and 400 x 600 for portrait format). When I get time I'll try to
look at something simpler, maybe based around the Matrix template.

The PUG uses a max of 800 pixels on either side but, after considerable
discussion on this when I took over, images are displayed at a max
display height of around 536 pixels so that they can be viewed without
having to vertically scroll the image (that 'display height' can be set
to any desired value within the template settings). Clicking the image
produces the full size version. I think this works well - a lot of
people don't like having to scroll images - they like to see the whole
image, even if it means viewing at a smaller size. 800 pixels seems a
reasonable maximum size.

I'm both excited and a little worried about the rebuild. Excited because we'll
have so many new open spaces to make use of. I'm worried because we could end
up with a whole lot of cheap fast square boxes being erected. I'm happy to be
rid of a number of eyesores but when I thought about it yesterday, some of
those eyesores would have been very nice buildings if they'd just had a good
restoration job.

I don't know whether the land under the buildings is privately owned in the
CBD. It might not matter as investors are getting cold feet due to the
restrictions being placed on the rebuild (eg height restrictions). So it might
be possible for the City Council to buy up lots of land on the cheap and make
good public use of it.

Personally I think the best approach is a dictatorial one. And my vote for
dictator-in-chief goes to Kevin McCloud. But that'll never happen. Maybe at
least he could do an episode of Grand Designs on a grand scale during the next
decade or so.

Re: Sanyo XX Battery Powered by eneloop, 2500mAh - Best of, bothworlds or a gimmick?

2011-12-07 Thread Peter Loveday

Well, just going by the math ...

The 1500mAh Eneloops give 1500 charges X 360 flashes per charge = 540,000
flashes
The 2500mAh Eneloops give 500 charges X 460 flashes per charge = 230,000
flashes

2 x 230,000 = 460,000

So it looks like the new high power ones have less than half the usable
life of the old ones.

Price-wise, they cost 67% more than the regular eneloops ($24.99 vs
$14.99), but only give about 43% of the value.

Regular Eneloops are 2000mAh.

But yeah, unless you really need it (ie don't want to have to change
batteries in the middle of a wedding...), then I'd stick with the regular
ones.

Plus, you can get them in pretty glitter colours :)

Looks like my first car - although it wasn't purple and it wasn't a

Re: Sanyo XX Battery Powered by eneloop, 2500mAh - Best of, both worlds or a gimmick?

http://us.sanyo.com/Battery-Products/XX-AA-4-Pack

Has anybody tried them yet? Are they noteworthy or just a gimmick?

Those look very interesting. My hybrio batteries, which were the best
of my hybrids seem to be dying. The larger capacity of the new eneloops
looks very interesting. Please get a set and tell us how well they work.

I did notice that they said only 500 recharges rather than 1500, so that
might be one of the tradeoffs.

Well, just going by the math ...

The 1500mAh Eneloops give 1500 charges X 360 flashes per charge =
540,000 flashes
The 2500mAh Eneloops give 500 charges X 460 flashes per charge = 230,000
flashes

2 x 230,000 = 460,000

So it looks like the new high power ones have less than half the usable
life of the old ones.

Price-wise, they cost 67% more than the regular eneloops ($24.99 vs
$14.99), but only give about 43% of the value.

Just the 600. I had the camera set to 16:9, and I cropped it
horizontally down to 2:3, so there is a bit of cropping. I have a
teleconverter for the 600, I can't recall if it is the 1.4x
or the 2x though. I would want a remote release before I used it with
this set up though. That is getting into a pretty extreme telephoto.

I think that I estimated that on APS 1800mm will fill the sensor (in the

Re: OT: Web Gallery Questions

2011-12-07 Thread David Parsons
1. SmugMug may be a good option for you. There are many templates
available for customizing your site, and you can get into the down and
dirty details of CSS and javascript if you like (there is no bare
metal access to the page code, so you have to do things in certain
ways. The nice thing about SM is that they have a simplified version
for mobile that has no flash (even if your main site does). There are
many people at the forums at dgrin.com (SM's official forum) that are
helpful and know how to customize very well.

2. One thing to think about is that even if someone is viewing on a
1280 wide monitor, they may not keep their browser windows
full-screen. You may want to think about either a site that scales to
window size or that has padding for when the window is expanded.

I'm working on re-doing my website this winter, hopefully completely

while since I re-did things. Any comments on the following would be

1. Web Photo Gallery Software: For my last web update I used Photoshops
web gallery tool (now migrated to bridge) and lots of global search and

Wild and scary stuff. I'd like to use a more simple approach this time -

for something good, so I'm not just looking are freeware. I see that
Mark Robers still lists Web Album Generator on this website, it looks
like the PUG uses JAblum. I was thinking of going with a fancy flash
gallery but at chatting with someone recently I was told that flash was
so passe' and besides, iPhones can't read it. Yee... what to do...

2. Image size: My current standard image size is 625 pixels wide or 500
pixels high. That was pretty aggressive when I first started the website
in 1997... rather small by today's standards. I'm thinking of something
like 800 pixels wide for the standard view and click on that for a 1000

found that the top two screen resolutions were 1280 x 800 and 1024 x 768

Some people like photos with punch, pop and sizzle. My take is that some
images work well that way, others don't. In the same vein I don't condemn
every image done with over the top HDR and tone mapping, but feel that it is
often over done. One of these days I'll learn the tools well enough to get a
natural looking wide dynamic range. Though judging based on my K-5 versus the
K20, by the time I get around to learning how to do it in software, the
sensors will be able to collect that dynamic range in hardware.

My kvetch is with portraits where the skin tones are over exposed enough to, if
not wash out, then lose most of the detail. I think of it as "The canon look",
probably because the friend of mine that shoots a lot in that style shoots a
canon.

I was cooking some beef yesterday in the stove.
When I took it out, I spent some time trying to get the picture.
Unfortunately, it didn't come out as sharp as I wanted.
http://42graphy.org/misc/_IR33616.jpg

The interesting part is that the droplets were hanging down, below the
pot cover, and on the photto they appear sticking up.

In relation to this shooting I have a question.
I was using K-7 with the DFA-100/2.8 Macro, on a Tiltall tripod.
I am trying to figure out what was the reason for the lack of sharpness
(even in the area where it is focused).

Risking the meet cooling off,
I tried with the shake-reduction switched on and off,
I tried to close down the aperture - up to 5.6 and 6.something
(the exposure time went up to about half a second),
I tried to use the 2-second delay release, but nothing of that seemed to
help.
Any other thoughts?

Do you think the mirror can produce some shake? Would it be better to do
it with the locked up mirror?

Igor

else noticed this trend? Maybe it's due to the proliferation of small

These pics are from a trip to the West Coast that we took on November
19-22. The Mrs was going over to do some work on the Monday so we
made a weekend of it.

The day we went over was the first anniversary of the Pike River mine

We didn't make it over in time to attend the service but we went to
see it before heading home, and I've included a photo in the

Thanks for your thoughts, Jack.  I've heard similar reviews from
others... Here's the thing: every now & then, I wonder if the 55-300
could scratch the itch I sometimes feel for the 60-250...

Trinity College of Music is located in the Old Rotal Naval College here in
Greenwich. Normally when walking through you get to hear some great sounds
coming out of the rehearsal rooms and studios, especially on a nice day when
the windows are open. At this time of year many of the students busk and
there's been some beautiful carol singing in the market today, as well as
some excellent quartets and such-like of different types of instrument.

I remember this trend starting way back in the 1980s when Fuji
introduced Velvia film ...

Rock'em, sock'em punchy colors have somehow become the norm since.
Many people have commented on how subtle the colors and tones in my
photographs are ... I sometimes shake my head because to me they look
normal and all the vogue is massive over-exaggeration.

Thanks, Bob! Yes, I took a series of general sky shots, but I felt this one
stood out due to the rising cloud of geese behind the one immediately overhead.
I believe there was a period that I could have shot at any of 360 degrees and
gotten a very similar scene.
When over, it took me a moment to recover and breathe out.

Jack,
That is stunning!  Did you get any other shots of the flight?
There's a place north of Milwaukee called Horicon Marsh that's
on the flyway for the Canada Geese.  It gets a similar look when
the birds go up, but they stay away from the edges of the preserve.
Hunters in Wisconsin can get a tag which lets them take a goose.
(knarF would be happy.)
