Re: Waaaayyyyy OT: Stereo receivers
on 2012-01-26 20:23 Rick Womer wrote I'm looking for something that will accept input from a turntable, CD player, DVD player, and maybe a computer; has a decent FM tuner; will supply ~30-40 watts per channel through my 5 ohm EPI speakers; and will sound really good. By really good, I mean making an orchestra, piano, mezzo-soprano, or organ sound like an orchestra, piano, mezzo-soprano, or organ. It's been so long since I researched this stuff that I don't even know where to begin. Any suggestions? first, i'm not a *phile, just *enjoyer; hope this helps almost everything except the high-end these days has gone to surround sound and dropped the phono inputs; since i listen to records fairly often, for a while my solution was to buy used older receivers; i still have a Yamaha RX-1100 on my computer, and a Yamaha RX-v595a on my upstairs TiVo; the latter was my living room receiver for a while and both have driven Canton Karat 100s to my satisfaction, no idea exactly how many watts, etc; both can switch analog video as well as audio, and we use that feature since the upstairs TiVo is analog-only (with a lifetime subscription, so we keep it alive via transplants because it also reduces the monthly rate for our TiVo HD) speaking of old-school i have a gorgeous minimalist Advent 300 receiver in the garage that i feel should replace the RX-1100; it's strong enough to drive the Cantons to desk listening levels, and i don't need video, and among other things it has a very nice phono preamp when we put a digital TV next to the turntable downstairs, change was necessary; i bought a Marantz NR1501 as a somewhat minimal surround-sound receiver that can handle everything i need; phono goes in through a cheapish Rolls VP29 preamp, and the Marantz can switch just that input to plain stereo and still do surround on the other channels; if you're like me and you go this route you won't see the point of tossing your mains just to get a matched set of surround speakers ... the nice thing about this receiver (and a fair number of others, but mostly more expensive) is that it can listen to itself and balance all the speakers for you; to me it is very much "good enough", and it saves a tremendous amount of trial and error and guesswork, since i have an asymmetrical situation and a very mixed speakers (low-end B&W mains, a modest Polk center channel, Radio Shack Minimus-7s for surround, some little Klipsch bookshelves for rear surround, plus an Infinity PS-10 sub) -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.

Waaaayyyyy OT: Stereo receivers
Seeking to exploit the wide-ranging expertise of this motley crew: I have pretty much the stereo system I bought when I graduated from college in 1974. The core is a pair of EPI 100 speakers (replaced the woofers ~10 years ago; they sound wonderful) and a Pioneer SX525 receiver (replaced the power transistors ~15 years ago). I only listen to classical music. The receiver is showing its age: the sound breaks up (especially in the winter), and the left channel often cuts out. I could probably get it fixed, but then I would be without a receiver for 3 or 4 weeks. Or, I could replace it. I'm looking for something that will accept input from a turntable, CD player, DVD player, and maybe a computer; has a decent FM tuner; will supply ~30-40 watts per channel through my 5 ohm EPI speakers; and will sound really good. By really good, I mean making an orchestra, piano, mezzo-soprano, or organ sound like an orchestra, piano, mezzo-soprano, or organ. RE: Peso: Olde Tyme
Don, I hope you were saying that regretfully! I still wear a watch, and not as a fashion accessory (which is the case with my wife - she loves unusual and colourful watches and has several, which are matched with particular outfits). I know I'm truly old-fashioned, but I really only want a phone to make calls (and send and receive messages - that is a useful function). In the movies, if I want to know the time, I can look at my watch in the light from the screen without having to fire up the screen on a mobile phone, thus disturbing my neighbours - and probably bringing their wrath down on my head! Re: Why Not RAW Format on ALL Digital Cameras?
It means more code, and more testing in QA. More code for the UI (admittedly small), but also more code because RAW requires a different compressor, a lossless one. And if it's a manufacturer with a proprietary RAW format, like NIkon, they have to decide if they'll support DNG as well. Whole lot of trouble for a vanishingly small market: ie the set of pros who want RAW but don't mind using a rinky-dink P&S. For instance, I don't care if a low-end P&S supports RAW or not, I simply won't buy one for my own use. I only care to own high IQ cameras. If your interested, your Illinois watch may have been produced earlier than 1965. I have an Illinois watch my father purchased around 1935. I've had it reconditioned (mostly cleaned up the shape of the face and hands) and use it from time to time. About ten years ago, I happened upon some history of the Illinois Watch Co. and as I recall, they were purchased by Hamilton watch in the late 20s and Hamilton stopped producing the Illinois brand in the late 30s. I managed to relocate the source of that Illinois documentation again: http://www.oldwatch.com/illinois.html You may be able to get an idea of the date of production here: http://www.pocketwatchsite.com/illinoisserials.html The model watch that I have is shown here: http://www.oldwatch.com/Museum/Illinois/ill161aelinvar.jpg Otis Wright On 1/26/2012 2:52 PM, Steven Desjardins wrote: That's funny. Re: Why Not RAW Format on ALL Digital Cameras?
On consumer P&S cameras, it's one more thing to explain and potentially support. Since the vast majority of P&S owners don't even know what RAW is, the manufacturers just don't want to complicate matters. IMHO, that is ;-) DSLRs, EVILs, and advanced compacts that I know of all support RAW. I was just thinking that it would seem an easy thing to provide the option to save to RAW format on any digital camera. I won't consider a camera that doesn't have that ability. So is that functionality being withheld to differentiate a higher end camera from a lower end model and therefore command a higher price? Each sculpture was created in 4 days using 20 tonnes of sand. http://dl.dropbox.com/u/1370864/Windsor-Sand-Sculptures/index.html -- Cheers Brian -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.

re: the marching band king
Thanks to Paul Bob Frank Rick & anyone I might have forgotten to note, for taking time to view and comment on my photo. I only had time for 2 or 3 views of the statue because my hands were freezing as I had left my shooting gloves at home. You all have shooting gloves for winter. Right? I'm glad I got 1 good one. Karl King and Meredith Wilson were both Iowans and very much aware of each others work. Wilson certainly had a love for band music. King made some of his reputation as bandmaster for Barnum & Baily. I don't know that he ever sold instruments to school bands Wilson is beloved in Iowa for the line "we're so by gawd stubborn we can stand touching noses for weeks at a time - and never see eye to eye." That man knew his Iowans. During the summer the Karl King Band gives a performance every Sunday evening at the local bandshell playing the marches of King, Sousa, and others. Something different for me. I don't like to make photos of someone's art, but I do like this rendering of Karl King the famous bandmaster. He was a student of John Phillips Sousa and wrote many band classics that are still played today. This statue stands on the town square of his hometown Ft Dodge IA. http://donspix.posterous.com/the-statue-in-the-park-karl-king-marching-ban#!/ -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.

Weegee and Vivian
Weegee wins. There are two exhibitions of Maier's work in NY right now and three Weegee's. The gallery we went to was the Steven Kasher http://www.vivianmaierprints.com/exhibitions/steven-kasher-gallery.html THe Weegee selections were wonderful... the Maier wasn't curated very well. That's why I say Weegee wins. The Maier's at this gallery are from the Goldstein batch - not the Maloof pieces that we were all discussing last year. The gallery culled what they showed from Goldstein's - which I don't remember ever seeing before - but some of you might have. Oddly, there are some pages of images from the Goldstein collection shown on line - which I thought would have been those shown at the gallery but only a few of them were there - and one standout was not on the gallery page. Not sure what was going on there. I'm thinking two diffrent people curated the Weegee and the Maier. My friend who I went with muttered "(Even) I could have done better" It was a shame. So looking forward to going to the Greenberg gallery soon to see the bigger show.. which are the photos from the book I believe (and more?) ann -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.
