I wore my House of Windsor commemorative Y-fronts - they've given me
sterling service at every Royal occasion since the Investiture of the Prince
of Wales. They're a nice robust nylon with a print at the front showing a
flagpole with the heads of Her Royal Britannic Majesty and Phil the Greek at
the base. At the back is a nice image of Prince Charles on one side,
Carnavon Castle on the other, and a prize Welsh leek up the middle.

I made a vow in 1969 not to wash them until the day after Charles's
coronation.

Not a lot of thoughts really. However if Pentax was really going to
announce a FF K mount camera wouldn't the latest lens, the DA 50 f1.8
which is pretty much one of their 50mm designs going back to oh, I don't
know the middle of the 20th century, and probably covers 24x36mm frames
admirably, be designated a DFA lens? True it doesn't have an aperture
ring, but it wouldn't be the first DFA lens to be released without one.
In the event of a FF camera probably wiith a list price between $2500
and $3500 it wouldn't cannibalize many sales of the FA 50 f1.4 lens with
that camera as the lens cost difference would be a fraction of the total
package price. So either a.) Pentax marketing has their collective
heads where the sun don't shine, or b.) there really isn't a FF camera
that close in the pipeline. I'll not take any bets either way, since

I spent the weekend taking photos at the annual Sand in the City
fundraiser. Friday's build day was overcast, but the Saturday Family
Festival couldn't have had better weather. There was a great turnout.

There are a LOT of photos in this gallery. In these type of events,
nobody really wants to see all of the photos but everyone looks for
their own. So, you try to get a shot of each of the participants.
They can drag them to their facebook pages or whatever.

No great art here, but it was a lot of fun.

Re: Some thoughts about a Sept announcement of a FF DSLR from Pentax

2012-06-04 Thread P. J. Alling
I believe that Canon removed the aperture ring from their lenses as a
cost savings and have managed to convince photographers that this is
more modern and that the lack of this feature is in fact a feature.
While having manual control of the aperture on a very long lens on the
body of the camera may be desirable, as the aperture ring could be of
necessity in an awkward place, it only makes sense to put aperture
control on a shortish lens and divide up the shooting controls a bit
more equally between both hands. At least Pentax and Nikon used to give
you the choice of how you wanted to work. Now it's left to Panasonic
and Samsung to allow that.

Actually the latest DFA 100mm macro that's weather resistant doesn't
have an aperture ring, either that or they've done a damned good job
camouflaging it.

I'll not take any bets either way, since
this is not necessarily an either or proposition.

PESO - PAD - Power Drive - Print-a-Day-7

2012-06-04 Thread George Sinos
This is number 7 in the series Print-a-Day for 30 Days. This photo
was posted shortly after the 2012 Power Drive competition.

http://georges.posterous.com/power-drive-print-a-day-7

When I processed this photo I added a vignette to help the eye stay
focused on the cars. I'm finding, when printing, the gradient in the
print has a slightly different character than it does on the screen.
I have not used a lot of different papers during this project, but I
have a feeling that will also effect the look of the vignette's
gradient.

Again, if you're very critical about results, it looks as though there
is no way around making test prints.

External Storage of RAW Files

2012-06-04 Thread Bipin Gupta
Why not use archival quality Blu Ray Discs. You could burn two or more
and disperse them to family/friends for safe keeping just in case
.
For those still in the DVD era, archival quality scratch proof coated
discs are available in over 8 GB capacities.
Ultimately all Hard Drives and solid state storage systems are bound
to fail, as they have a life. Folks with a Raid Array (of Hard Disks)
stand a better chance of recovery of failed drives ofcourse, but then
mother board electronics are the weak link in such systems.
For those of us with lots of moolah, cloud storage on a far away
server is another safe way of storing your photos.

With older non CPU chipped (ie manual) lenses a higher end body, you
can still use the aperture ring on a Nikon.

I believe that Canon removed the aperture ring from their lenses as a cost

control of the aperture on a very long lens on the body of the camera may be
desirable, as the aperture ring could be of necessity in an awkward place,
it only makes sense to put aperture control on a shortish lens and divide up
the shooting controls a bit more equally between both hands.  At least
Pentax and Nikon used to give you the choice of how you wanted to work.  Now
it's left to Panasonic and Samsung to allow that.

Actually the latest DFA 100mm macro that's weather resistant doesn't
have an aperture ring, either that or they've done a damned good job

I'll not take any bets either way, since
this is not necessarily an either or proposition.

I also suspect that Pentax marketing product development are still

Third Party Batteries

2012-06-04 Thread Bipin Gupta
I am certain Auld Tymer Digital PDMLers would have had an over dose of
this topic which is on some (20) World Class Photo Forums like Pentax,
Photo Camel, DCRP, Shutter Talk, JJMehta etc.
95.70 % of the folks have said 3rd Party batteries are just as good,
as long as you buy them from good sources like Amazon, Adorama,
Battery Fly com, Energizer etc etc. They cost between $ 6 to 12
shipped vs the original for about $ 45. So the choice is yours.
I have been using 3rd Party + Original Pentax Batteries on my K20D and
K-5, and have found absolutely no difference. Being an electronic
buff, a DIY and a master mechanic, I keep a track of the voltage when
fully charged, half charged and discharged of 3rd Party as well as the
Originals. All my (9) batteries are going strong even after over (3)
years.
You are just plain unlucky (Bad Karma) if one has exploded on
you!!! So can bad Original Pentax batteries - after all Pentax and
the Canikons don't manufacture batteries.

Re: Some thoughts about a Sept announcement of a FF DSLR from Pentax

2012-06-04 Thread Steven Desjardins
I think John has hit upon the key point. The two Pentax sales may
have left them with a legacy DA lens (which may work with FF) en
route and Ricoh wanting and/or finally letting them produce a FF DSLR.

to catch up with the changes.

Ultimately all Hard Drives and solid state storage systems are bound

After six rejects I decided to stop wasting my time. Haven't submitted since.

Your photo certainly is worthy of inclusion. I guess when you throw things open

Yeah, I had some personal doo-doo accepted last year. I really can't complain
and maybe I should feel a wee bit guilty for submitting some especially smelly
stuff that got accepted. Seems to me the standards for acceptance have been
lowered and I've been taking advantage of it.
Submit a few more, Frank. Hopefully I'm wrong and the voters have matured
somewhat since you left.
My sense is that your image posts deserve and receive more glowing comments

Well I like it and I'm not anywhere near spiritual.

:-)

When the Pentax gallery started up several years ago and there was a great
hubbub on this list with post after post declaring that the author had yet
another photo accepted, I submitted a few. This was before I started shooting
the odd critter or flower; these were all street photos, all technically far
from perfect but I thought they all had merit.

After six rejects I decided to stop wasting my time. Haven't submitted since.

Your photo certainly is worthy of inclusion. I guess when you throw things open
to a public vote, this sort of crap happens.

Which reminds me: didn't a pile of doo-doo get voted in last year?

Maybe you're better off getting voted off the island, Jack.

Well I wouldn't exactly call that a great design but it is certainly
timeless. My dad had a 53 but it was a 4 door. It was on that car I
performed my first oil change found out when they said XX qts of oil, they
meant it. Nothing like foaming oil coming out of the breather.

Nice capture, I like both renditions.

I see more and more of HDR applied to older car images I really like most
of them - to me it gives them a classy/artsy look.
