You're right Stig, but for me what AF parameters he did measure is useful to know. I find SDM lens focussing to be pretty good in bright light already, even on the K20D. Thank you, Steve, Bruce and Darren for the recommendations! I passed these suggestions to my friend. He is thinking now. I suspect that the major advantage of 4/3 system compared to Pentax-Q is a larger variety of lenses available. However, I didn't do a thorough comparison, - so I might be wrong here. Igor Date: Mon, 29 Oct 2012 12:55:47 -0400 (EDT) From: Igor Roshchin Subject: OT - can you recommend a good digital rangefinder? Hi All: A very good friend of mine asked for an [urgent] advice on photo cameras. A portion of that includes a recommendation for non-SLR (aka mirrorless) digital cameras with changeable lenses for an enthusiast at early stages. The camera is to be small (mobile, take-anywhere), easy to use in both automatic and semi-automatic/manual modes, able to handle reasonably low light, and not to have long shutter lag. Most frequent use: shooting while travelling (landscapes, urban views), shooting people/friends non-very-intrusively. It would be a step-up alternative to something like Lumix LX-7 or Samsung ex2f that allows interchangeable lenses (for growing needs). The question is not about fancy Leica cameras or X100, or rather, it is about mid-level cameras (with a budget of within $1K or less for the body and one-two lenses). I haven't been following this segment of the market as closely. I think that some of the Panasonic/Olympus/..? micro-4/3 cameras fall into this category, Nikon 1, etc. I am not sure if K-01 or Q10 would be reasonable here, - they seem to me too much of a specialty, and not as mainstream cameras... I'd appreciate if you can mention a few models that you'd recommend. If you can point out the strong points of the model, - that would also be great. I have both a Q and and E-PM1. No question that the noise is better with the larger sensor, especially at higher iso. OTOH, the Q does remarkably well for a 1/2.3 sensor, and I enjoyed using the Q very much while street shooting in Philly. Re: PESO 2012 - 120-130 - GDG
Thanks Igor! Alfa Romeos in the USA are definitely enthusiast cars and often a bit of a PITA to deal with. That said, they are delightful to drive and always interesting in design and specification. The Milano is a nice sedan, although not my favorite model (I much preferred the Tipo 164). However, a friend of mine owns two GTV6s (one for the track and one for the street, used on nice weekends and trips). A Milano Verde is his daily driver and runaround car. Obviously an enthusiast ... he's got all the connections for parts and service needed, and doesn't care that he can't just drop it at the local dealership. It's all good. I'm not patient enough to play the game with older Alfa Romeo cars anymore, although I drove Alfa Romeo Spiders for many years and still love the marque. Hopefully we'll get some of the new models in the coming years, now that FIAT is making an effort to return to the US market. Re: Nasty Storm East Coast
We got incredibly easy here in Toronto. Winds started yesterday afternoon into last night were fifty to sixty km/h (30-40 mph) with gusts up around 80 km/h. No big whoop. The rain was heavy at times but nowhere near the 100 mm they warned of. We got only about 10 mm here in town. Sadly one casualty; a store sign blew off a wall killing a passerby. It's been a bit windy in and off during the day but just mild gusts. A teeny bit of rain but we actually saw some blue skies! Apparently some parts of southern and western Ontario got slammed pretty good. Glad to hear that all on this list are accounted for and okay. You can already buy some Alfa Romeo hardware from Chrysler. The Dodge Dart is built on a slightly larger version of the Giulietta platform and has the same suspension system. One of the available engines, the 1.4-liter turbo four is from Alfa (and Fiat) as well. But the real prize, the sleek and sexy Alfa 4C, will be here soon, perhaps before the end of 2013. Re: OT - can you recommend a good digital rangefinder?
Just to add, a used Q is an even better deal. It's a fun camera and I think Pentax really nailed the ergonomics on this one for such a small body. The biggest problem with it was the initial $800 price tag. On Tue, Oct 30, 2012 at 11:21 AM, Steven Desjardins drd1...@gmail.com wrote: I have both a Q and and E-PM1. Re: On wi-fi, flashes, batteries etc.
Going through the e-mail that accumulated during my trip to USA now... Probably will be doing so for few more weeks give or take. I think, Larry, that you're right with one exception. I think that the flash have to be triggered by wired connection. So that it ensures that flash fires exactly when you want it to fire and not some time in the future depending on the connection state. Admittedly I find myself thinking more and more in terms of conservative technology and less and less about bells and whistles of modern day. E.g. I find it refreshing that my Ricoh GXR has no image stabilization and that the lens has only one focal length being relatively simple optical design... On 9/18/2012 8:22 PM, Larry Colen wrote: I think that the vast majority of problems that I have with my flash have to do with the physical connection between the camera and the flash. If the camera bodies and flashes were both equipped with wifi it would open a tremendous number of opportunities. Of course, the right way to do this would be a communications standard so that things would work across brands. This would also have an advantage of wifi tethering and control of both bodies and flashes. Being able to control everything from one laptop. I'd also love to be able to use the same battery in my flash as my K-5. I'd do it as standard battery format, bigger than any of the ones in the cameras, that would fit in all grips and flashes. It would also be possible to make an adapter so you could use the K-5 battery, or the K20, K-foo, or whatever new battery was developed. Of course an extended life battery that just fit in grips and flashes would also be nice. Unfortunately, Pentax hasn't hired me to design and develop new products and features, so I don't see these things coming in the near future. -- Larry Colen l...@red4est.com sent from i4est -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.
