PESO: TownshipShed

2013-03-18 Thread Jack Davis

Can't really explain it, but I find myself pulling up this impulsive shot
occasionally for another fix. Have driven past it a number of times and even
shot it a year or so ago..
The original file carries quite a bit of detail and that has to be it's main
attraction  I, also, find the geometry sort of interesting.
"Whatever."

Comments?

It is an interesting image. That is a fine blue sky, and it is set
off well against the dull color of the shed. The shed has a lot of
detail and texture, and the incongruousness of the green panel and
unruly shrub catch and hold the eye.

Re: PESO: Take Daddy's Hand

2013-03-18 Thread Daniel J. Matyola
Thanks, Jack. This scene reminds me of the first time I took my son
to the Jersey Shore. He was very young and my wife was afraid that
the sight and would of the surf would frighten him. While my wife
held the (very large) video camera, a took him by the hand, and
assured him that he would be safe with me. As soon as he saw a wave
crashing toward the shore, he let out a loud scream of joy, pulled his
hand out of mine, and ran into the water. It was lucky his legs were
still short, so I could catch up to him before he made it very far in.
As soon as he became old enough, he insisted on taking scuba lessons.

Maui is an ideal place to introduce small children to the ocean,
because the water temperature is about the same as the air
temperature, and because there are many coves where the waves are mild
enough for youngster to enjoy.

Re: An Irish Pub at Noon

2013-03-18 Thread Bob Sullivan
Bob W,
When your last name is Sullivan, you can't escape St. Paddy's Day.
One year, I was in the Doctor's office getting a blood test.
Two lab tech's worked drawing blood in the tiny lab, a salt and pepper
colored team.
We danced around each other to get seated as none of us were petite.
My tech was the older white woman who saw my name and announced she was Irish.
With a twinkle in my eye, I told her we had a new friend in political office.
I reminded her of the movie stars Maureen O'Hara, and Danny O'Day,
and then pointed out the Irishman - Barach O'Bama.
Out of the corner of my eye, I caught the Black tech trying not to
laugh out loud.

You know Jack I have several shots like this in my collections so I like
the genre. I find that converting to B&W makes them little more
universal & less location specific. Also They show better as part of a
series. So shoot more not less.

The thing that does bother me is it looks like some of the people on the

When I did, the image did not appeal as much to me. I think the

Jack, a worthy subject; I see why you return to it. Appealing geometry
and textures, no question.

My very personal observation is that it looks too bright, seems to
have excessive glare, and I'm mentally reaching for my sunglasses. I
would try darkening it and increasing the saturation a touch, or
reshooting it earlier and/or later in the day. Maybe give it more
space in the frame while I was at it.

You should get closer on the dead birds. Make it more visceral. I've taken some
gruesome dead animal pictures, but I'm too afraid to share them for fear of it
polarizing people. Maybe I will put them all in a series one day. There's
something that makes me kind of queasy looking at pictures of rotting corpses.
The dead body doesn't bother me, but the decay is really unsettling to me. I'd
much rather shoot decaying buildings honestly. Its probably a normal reaction.

I'd used K-5 DA 17-70mm with closeup loupes 2× + 10× combined. Side
effect of this lens structure is that they only have sharp center of the
image and focus is blurring out to the edges. This makes however pinhole
effect. These are my first blossoms of the spring 2013.

Re: PAW167 - Men

2013-03-18 Thread DagT
Yes, I think it is. There are several reasons why I show these pictures. One is
simply to tease some people who are obsessed with bird pictures, but another is
the contrast between "free as a bird" and the harsh reality. One reason why I
don´t want to get too close is that I try to get some beauty there.

As for decay you should take a look at the pictures of a friend mine, Øyvind
Antonsen, he both studies the cruel sides of nature and also the abandoned
homes in his part of Norway:

Har! There's an error in the definition of Har!

Har! is a signifier whose signified is a constructed reality. Nietzsche, in
his book The Will To Power, said that he had an aversion to 'one total view
of the world', and the PDML feels much the same about the meaning of Har!
which, like notions such as equality, democracy and the rule of law has no
universally accepted definition. To reflect Nietzsche again, it has
'countless meanings'. It is perspectival. We all need Har! of one sort or
another, but which Har! is valid? It expresses incredulity towards
meta-narratives and the obsolescent apparatus of legitimation, corresponding
to the crisis in metaphysical philosophy, and invokes stylistic eclecticism
as a pastiche of the dominating metaphor. The narrative function has lost
its functors.

I hope that makes it clear.

Bobrillar!

Re: MX-1 promo video

I'm actually pretty impressed by the commercial. Aside from the fact
that I would be wearing sweat pants and a the "She's with stupid" T
shirt my wife got me for my birthday, I can relate to the dude in the
video.

But seriously - the brassing thing is totally contrived and Pentax
trivializes themselves by emphasizing that. Yeah, my 6x7 and LX have
brassing but they are over 30 and 20 years old respectively. It is silly
to contemplate using a digital camera that old, but maybe hipsters in
2043 will be doing lomography with K-5's and M-X's 2-d flat field
photos will be all the retro craze.

But - it is an appealing camera if you are looking for a point and shoot
that is pocketable. But with a coat like that, the guy in the commercial
could have easily carried a Q10 and a couple of lenses.

But the q10 doesn't have brassing! Its funny that people have such issue with
it. All the reviews I've seen so far, most reviewers went out of their way to
praise the design and all commented on how they liked the brass. Sure its a
little silly, but would you rather the camera looked like the xz-2? I must say,
the sample pictures I've seen have been very sharp and approaching m43 quality
at base iso.

But it's so pretentious, so precious. Pentax's agency obviously worked hard to
find a guy with a just-so effete accent. And his fawning over the camera
strikes me as ridiculously over the top. Can you tell I don't like it:-). The
camera, on the other hand, may well be fine. I have no idea.

First "streetie" (as Derby calls 'em) since the accident. And the only one from

But I got this one!

Outside the venerable Cadillac Lounge in Toronto's Parkdale neighbourhood.

Hope you enjoy. Comments welcome.

First "streetie" (as Derby calls 'em) since the accident. And the only one from
yesterday. So hard to react and shoot when you one can't walk with camera in
hand. Gotta stop, grab camera, lift to eye, compose, shoot. Takes too long.

But I got this one!

Outside the venerable Cadillac Lounge in Toronto's Parkdale neighbourhood.

Hope you enjoy. Comments welcome.

Cheers,

Re: PESO: Haleakala'a

2013-03-18 Thread Alan C
You prompted me to do a bit of Hawaiian research. My mental image of Hawaii
is beaches & big waves! I had no idea the volcanoes were so high - Haleakala
is over 5 miles above the seabed. It is interesting that so little rain
falls at those high altitudes - the peaks must mostly be above the clouds.
The scene you photographed could easily be a moonscape. Then there is the
amazing Silversword you mentioned which had to be saved from extinction.

I never thought of it that way, but it is certainly arid and almost
completely devoid of life. There are tiny insects and some plants,
including the fabled Silversword, that live up here at 10,000 feet
above the Pacific.

Thanks for looking, Alan.

I posted a color version last year. While printing up a copy as a gift,
I realized this was the HMS Bounty, sunk during Hurricane Sandy, with
the loss of the Captain and a member of the crew...

Thanks, Alan. One of the things I love about Hawai'i is the diversity
of climates and geological formations.

The Silverswords are Maui icons. None were blooming while I was there
this February, but I did capture a few immature plants:

Anyone here use the 16-45?
How would you evaluate the results you get?

it is very good for the price; it was by far my most-used lens for a couple of
years, and i've taken it on several trips; i've done a lot of plant photography
and the 1:4 "macro" is a plus - gets you in pretty close

but i pretty much retired it when i got a real macro lens and started to cover
the 16-45 range with primes, starting at 50mm; except for certain wider shots,
i mostly shot the long end, so the comparison to my A 50/1.7 is stark: the 50mm
prime is much cheaper, much faster, much lighter & smaller, much nicer to
focus, significantly sharper (esp. corners) and a bit more contrasty; the only
pluses for the 16-45 are flexibility and closer focus (well, autofocus too); i
used to get "you've got a big lens" comments with the 16-45; do not get those
any more
