Excellent, Frank. I agree this one's a step above the previous shot,

^^^ DA 17-70mm is my absolute favorite because of the focal range and
its sharpness. What I slightly dislike here, on this picture is that I
had shadow enchancement on and it reduced contrast rather than making
shadows and colors bit deeper.

Allium is the Latin genus name for onions, garlic, leeks and so forth. In
French the word for garlic is ail (old plural: aulx). There's a mayonnaise-like
emulsion of oil and garlic called ailleul, which in Spanish is alioli - ali
being garlic, oli being oil.

Yesterday was slightly overcast, but I decided to take a drive along the
beach anyway, took the Kalamar 500mm mirror along just because I hadn't
used it lately, thought maybe I'd get some photos of wildlife, it can be
surprising good at middle distances. I didn't get anything at all
presentable except this grab shot with AS set at the wrong focal
length. There are a lot of defects with this image, not the least of
which is that the intricate green and black pattern in the dress is
completely lost, but I kind of liked the composition.

As usual comments are welcome but may be totally ignored.

Note: What originally attracted my eye to the young lady, at least I
assume it's a young lady, for all I can really tell it could be a skinny
young man, was. that unlike all the other people on the beach in jeans
or shorts, this individual was wearing an ankle length dress.

RE: PESO Dark roast

2013-05-13 Thread Gerrit Visser
Yes indeed. The aroma is amazing, even before brewing the coffee.

We (Bruce and I) now have the challenge of trying to find something like
these particular beans locally. Saudi Arabia is not a big coffee exporter, I
bought them recently in a herb/spice shop in the Old Souk in Dubai. Not sure
when I am getting back there.
We did find a great bean source in Toronto, field trip planned for next
week.

He showed me a preview of shots from their recent cruise -- great

Gerrit brought back bags of really interesting coffee from a few
points of call and some dark beans from Saudi Arabia, brewed EU-style,
 were particularly fine ...

That would lose the bit of shrub on the right side, unless you're

PESO: Portrait of a Self-Portrait

2013-05-13 Thread Charles Robinson
There was a big debate today in the MN Senate regarding marriage equality.

Without getting into any discussions/debates, let's just say that it had people
pretty animated on both sides of the issue.

MN will be the 12th state to legalize gay marriage when the governor signs it
into law tomorrow afternoon. (Yay MN!)

In ANY case: I walked up to the capitol building today to see what the mood was
like as the Senate was having their debate. It was... busy and loud.

One image here that I liked - as a guy is lining up his cellphone to take a
picture of himself:

Nikkormat, and there was fresh snow. So instead of walking to my office for a
day of reading, I drove my wife to her teaching job in a rural school district,
and then drove around the backroads. This shot has long been one of my
favorites. I worked hours over multiple sessions in the darkroom trying to get
a print that I liked, finally got one that was good enough, framed it with
reclaimed wood from an old shed on my grandfather's farm, and it has been with
me since.

Flash forward to last week when I was hauling stuff from the storage locker and
moving/sorting stuff on my shelves, all in preparation for a yard sale. I came
across my box full of old negatives. Rummaging through the box earlier this
evening I happened on the roll containing this shot. A few minutes of set-up, a
few minutes of scanning, and my image was in Lightroom ready to process. A few
minutes of fiddling and I have a version of the image at least as good as any
of my many trial prints. The good old days were good in many ways, but modern
technology is wonderful!

Very nice. But I'm kinda partial to cows. I might consider taking a
little off the left and the top, but it might change the composition too
much.

Re: This is stupefying.

2013-05-13 Thread Darren Addy
It looks like the stupifying K-5ii will arrive tomorrow, as it arrived
at Lenexa, KS this afternoon. I thought the following thread might be
of interest, as it is from someone in the same boat that I am in:
http://www.dpreview.com/forums/thread/3471850

Note, in particular, Gonzie's post about 2/3 of the way down the page
that begins with I spoke to Randy at Pentax this morning...
This thread is only about a month old.

Well, my order shows up *in* the FedEx tracking system now, so it is

Next: look for the unboxing video to come to a YouTube page near you!

Hey Darren, keep us updated on the receipt of your Brand New K-5 II
and the de-boxing experience. But do look carefully at every piece to
ensure you really receive brand new stuff.
And check out the Shutter count + manufacturing date + the version #
+ Pentax -Ricoh or Pentax Hoya model + Body Serial #.
You might also check out if the camera is already registered with
Pentax? Yes seriously, this was the experience of a Canon Pro
Photographer who purchased his FF Canon from a pretty well known Hong
 Kong stores.

Except that Hong Kong store apologized and replaced the camera right
away upon being informed of the situation. I can accept the camera was
sent to him in error, and the vendor did the right thing to correct it.

I was shattered when BH sold me a brand new K20D in early 2009 with a
shutter count of over 600 actuations.
 Regards.
 Bipin.

Re: Long ago and far away . . .

2013-05-13 Thread Stan Halpin
Thanks Doug. The cropping was one of my dilemmas back in the darkroom days;
something had to come off to fit the image on an 8x10 sheet of photo paper,
(and fill the paper), but I liked it the way I shot it. For this iteration I
just went full frame.
