Allium is the Latin genus name for onions, garlic, leeks and so forth. In French the word for garlic is ail (old plural: aulx). There's a mayonnaise-like emulsion of oil and garlic called ailleul, which in Spanish is alioli - ali being garlic, oli being oil. B On 13 May 2013, at 17:37, Daniel J. Long ago and far away . . .
. . . I was a young man in grad school in the Hoosier State. One snowy day in February or March 1969 I had some free time + film in my almost brand new Nikkormat, and there was fresh snow. So instead of walking to my office for a day of reading, I drove my wife to her teaching job in a rural school district, and then drove around the backroads. This shot has long been one of my favorites. I worked hours over multiple sessions in the darkroom trying to get a print that I liked, finally got one that was good enough, framed it with reclaimed wood from an old shed on my grandfather's farm, and it has been with me since. Flash forward to last week when I was hauling stuff from the storage locker and moving/sorting stuff on my shelves, all in preparation for a yard sale. I came across my box full of old negatives. Rummaging through the box earlier this evening I happened on the roll containing this shot. A few minutes of set-up, a few minutes of scanning, and my image was in Lightroom ready to process. A few minutes of fiddling and I have a version of the image at least as good as any of my many trial prints.
