Re: Rumors were Pentax releasing 5 cameras this year..

2013-06-12 Thread P.J. Alling
Sensor availability, Pentax used a Kodak sensor in the 645D and Kodak
spun that division off, on it's long slide into oblivion, Pentax may
have a long term agreement with the successor company, which could be
having difficulties producing a next generation chip without the great
yellow mother as a backstop, or there may just be a general shortage of
quality higher resolution medium format sensor chips.

I'm not going to say I'm underwhelmed. Pentax needed to differentiate an

I guess Pentax is actually making money on the Q system.

I'm not entirely sure what was the point going from the K30 to the K50.

It does look like the K500 might be shaped the same as the K50.

Looking at the specs it says metering M&K lenses are Av only,
and only wide open. I wonder what happened to the green button
in manual mode.

It sounds like they've regressed, but enabling the green button kludge
would be a simple firmware update to correct. I expect that will happen
if there's enough yelling on the internet about it. However that won't
happen until they start getting into enough users hands for the
complaints to start rolling in.

Any guesses at what comes next? 645D K-3 Full frame? or APS-C 24mp.

I'm hoping for the K-3. It would effectively nearly double the
number of lenses I have, by giving a lot of them wider fields of
view.

I've been holding off pulling the trigger on getting a K-5 II until
I know what is coming at the top of the line. If my K-5 needs an
expensive repair, it may not be worth it on a body with 85,000 frames
on it. CRIS seems to think that I might just have something stuck to the
magnets, and that would be fairly inexpensive to fix.

Meanshile, I'm keeping my eyes open for amazing deals on a K-5 II.
The best price on Amazon is from a place called davismax, at $788.
There don't seem to be a lot of screaming warnings about them either.

I'm also willing to consider a used K-5 or even a K-7 if it was
cheap enough. I suppose that I should just send mine in and use
the K-x until I get word on the damage.

I'm not going to say I'm underwhelmed. Pentax needed to

looks like it's an incredible bargain compared to the it's
competition, but while I don't think I need a 24mp DSLR, if everyone

What Pentax needs most of all is for people to be able to
actually buy one, in a store.

I shot a video for the Times at Ford proving grounds last week. It's still
embargoed, so I can't post it, but I struggled with light. In certain
directions, I got enough interior light for good shots, but in other cases the
light drop off was just too great. I have to shoot another similar video inside
a car on the move next week, so I both an LED lamp. I also plant to use it in
conjunction with flash for some night shoots of cars. (I have to shoot a car at
a drive-in with neon in the background in the next week or two.) I think it
will be much more manageable than a wireless second flash. We'll see. This it

Re: Rumors were Pentax releasing 5 cameras this year..

2013-06-12 Thread Darren Addy
Well we've already passed 5 for "this year" IF you count the WG-3,
WG-3 GPS, WG-10, MX-1, and now these three new models (Q-7, K-50,
K-500). I heard that a 645D II was in the works many moons ago, but it
hasn't shown up yet. I'm not sure what classification(s) of camera the
"5 new models" was supposed to represent. Given that they released a
new lens for the 645D at Photokina last year (the macro, right?) I
don't think they are finished with the 645 YET.

I still have to believe that a 24MP K-3 and K-3s are in the works
before the year is over. How long can you continue to release 16MP
sensor cameras? Sure, they seem to be a sweet spot, but even I'm
having trouble differentiating the models - what is a new shopper
going to think?

I'm not entirely sure what was the point going from the K30 to the K50.

It does look like the K500 might be shaped the same as the K50.

Looking at the specs it says metering M&K lenses are Av only,
and only wide open. I wonder what happened to the green button
in manual mode.

>

What Pentax needs most of all is for people to be able to
actually buy one, in a store.

I'm not going to say I'm underwhelmed. Pentax needed to differentiate

GESO The Brawley

2013-06-12 Thread Bruce Walker
So I landed a paying gig last weekend. I was to document the opening
of a new club: show off the facilities, catch the opening night band,
dancing, drinking, and try to snap some of the staff too. Here's a
small set of 12 of the more interesting shots (of the 74 finals
delivered to The Brawley brass):

http://flic.kr/s/aHsjG1qjie The Brawley Opening

All taken with my K20D, DA* 55, DA* 16-50 & DA* 50-135.

The first three staff shots (wait, bar, kitchen) were lit with a used
$30 AF200T in an 18" softbox on a monopod, gelled 1/2 CTO, and wielded
by my able assistant (my wife). I precomputed the flash exposure
assuming a fixed rough distance to the subjects, then set the shutter
to let in ambient room light about two stops below the key. When WB
adjusted for the orange gel, the background goes a blue tint to give
it that cool look.

The west wing and patio shots are HDR, as you've likely guessed --
apologies in advance. I used Nik HDR Pro and it's pretty good, but I'm
not really an HDR kinda guy. I just figured these facilities shots
would benefit from that Marketing Imperative where Over The Top just
isn't good enough. :-)

Most of the dark club dancing and band shots were taken at ISO 3200.
In the past I dismissed that as useless on the K20D but they clean up
nicely with Nik Dfine, so I'm coming to rely on it now. (It even
removes colour banding well so I'm going to go back and revisit some
of my "lost" K100Ds shots.)

I shot a video for the Times at Ford proving grounds last week. It's still
embargoed, so I can't post it, but I struggled with light. In certain
directions, I got enough interior light for good shots, but in other cases the
light drop off was just too great. I have to shoot another similar video inside

Non-news story of the day: Kodak not making acetate

2013-06-12 Thread Mark Roberts
There's a bit of panic going around the web as Kodak has announced
they're going to cease manufacture of acetate film base. They're not
stopping FILM production, they're just no longer manufacturing their
own acetate to make it with.

Re: Bracketing on the K5

2013-06-12 Thread Brian Walters

Quoting Rob Studdert :

Hi Team,

I got caught out when shooting some panos recently, bracketing in
manual mode my camera would default to bracketing Tv so the aperture
would change to bracket which made stacking images a little more
problematic than I would have liked.

Just in case you were not aware the remedy to change the bracketing to
Av lies in the "green button" setting of the E-dial programming
whether you have the "green button" active or not. To change it go to
the E-Dial Programming menu for manual and select "TvShift". I found
the solution on-line, the manual was next to useless.

Well, at least Pentax supply a hard copy manual. The Lumix that I
recently bought for my wife came with a 'Quick Guide' which didn't go
much further than how to insert the battery (I know where I would have
liked to insert it on the person who designed the guide, but I
digress). The full manual only came on a pdf.

Thanks for the tip on manual bracketing. I normally fire off a
sequence of images in manual mode, change the shutter speed and fire
off another one or two more sequences. Obviously bracketing would be
quicker.

Funny, my 16-50 just arrived back from CRIS today, too... They must
have shared a truck/plane ride at some point. :) I'd be happier if I
never had to send it in, and it hadn't taken over a month to get back
to me, but whatever... It's back, and that's good.

Congrats, and enjoy!

Slight change to PUG schedule

2013-06-12 Thread Brian Walters

G'day all

I'm a bit behind in my PUGgery due to my recent 6 week roadtrip in the USA.

The original PUG schedule for 2013 had a special, extra Open Gallery
planned for June. I've moved that back a month to July.

So far there are two submissions for the special Open Gallery (from
Eric and Jorge). I'll hold them for July so there's no need to
resubmit.

The June PUG - 'Trees' - is almost ready and should be on line in a
day or two.

OT: Another windfall/enablement

2013-06-12 Thread Walt

Hi all,

At some point over the past few weeks, I apparently had a lucky
horseshoe kicked up my ass. Seems I won in a drawing for a laptop last
week -- nothing special to be sure, but hey -- FREE!

It's smaller than my main laptop, and thus, more convenient to carry
around with me. So, with that in mind, does anyone have any suggestions
with regard to presenting a portfolio on it? It's a Compaq 15.8", and
the display isn't exactly Retina-quality, I suspect. But I'd like to
have a way for someone to easily navigate through a relatively small
collection of my better work and make it look reasonably professional.
It would have to be stored locally, so I can show it when there may not
be an internet connection available. I like Picasa's picture viewer OK,
but wonder if there might be something better out there.

Any ideas?

Thanks!

Walt

Re: K-5 crooked sensor

2013-06-12 Thread Bob Sullivan
Larry,
Yes it's crooked and that sounds like the sensor auto cleaning or what
it sounded like on the K-20.
When friends start dropping from heart attacks it might be time to
give up 60 hour weeks.

K-5 crooked sensor

2013-06-12 Thread Larry Colen
In the recent past I had noticed two seemingly unrelated quirks with my K-5.
Under certain circumstances, it would make a strange rhythmic thumping.

I had also noticed that some of my photos recently didn't seem to be coming out
the way I thought I had framed them.

I did a quick test, lining my camera up on a level, with auto horizon off,
and sure enough, the pictures were coming out crooked.

I set it on clean sensor mode to look at the sensor, and not only was the
sensor crooked but it was making a rhythmic thumping.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dq9RVaW_A_c

But, other than this, 60ish hour weeks at the office as we approach deadline,
and someone who has been a friend for about twenty years, someone a couple
years younger than me, dropping dead from a heart attack last week, things
are going Ok.

a DVD doesn't take full advantage of 1080p

i would opt to bring a computer if possible, and compose the slideshow in
whatever app you work with most (LR, Aperture, iPhoto); make sure you have the
adapters needed

do you need a tech rehearsal for the rehearsal dinner?

maybe burn a DVD as a backup; in a pinch a quick fix would be to create copies
of your portrait images that are in landscape format with bars on each side;
quick work if you have a prepared background and just copy the image and paste
it centered into the background (could even be automated)
