One of the big issues for me will be how many ports of what modality. And
one thing I am quite unclear on: I know that if I daisy-chain FW400 and
FW800 devices, I will limit throughput to the FW400 capacity.

This depends on two things: the specific FW implementation of the devices,
and the order they appear in the chain. Devices fully implementing the spec
will run at their rated IO speed even in a mixed chain setup, but almost all
devices will operate at rated IO speed if the FW400 devices are at the tail
of the chain, furthest from the port.

I've measured this and found it to be true.

Thanks Godfrey - that makes sense. Near the top of my to-do list is to
a - prune and delete files from across my several drives, aiming to keep no
more than 2 copies of stuff (one copy one a RAID-1 system);
b - consolidate scattered files; and
c - shut everything down and physically reconfigure my external drive space
to better organize the mass of wiring (and make room for possible additions).

In the process I will now be paying attention to position-in-the-chain issues.

little nudge from Rick Womer got me thinking about the list again so I decided
to join and see what is happening.

It will take me a bit to get back up to speed and to see who might still be
around from when I was on the list.  Thanks for allowing me to come back to the

Welcome to a prodigal son! While you were gone Pentax went through a few
transformations and then finally produced a FF body with a whole family of new
lenses. Negative reaction from this list (e.g., the 18-180/2.0 should have been
a 17-178/1.4, the new 200/2.8 macro should have been a 197, 15FPS with a buffer
of only 45 RAW shots were inadequate for fast paced sports like cricket, etc.)
convinced Pentax to withdraw the whole line-up within a few weeks.  ;-)  We are
waiting to see what happens next.

Other than that, things are much the same.

Sometimes I think the Vulture should have been the PDML Official Bird rather
than the lovable cormorant.

Re: OT Any advice for inexpensive lapel microphones?

 Hi Matthew,

 Thanks for sharing this one.
I see that some reviews and questions to the answers suggest that the
microphone is designed to be powered (although not with the phantom mic
 power? - sounds weird?).
I understand that if you use it with a computer, you need to enable the
 microphone boost option.

It is not a problem by itself, but depending on the device you are
planning to use it with, you may have some difficulties with the level
 of the signal.

Condenser or capacitive mics (which this obviously is) need
pre-amplification close to the module and ao require power. Larger
mics are often battery powered, balanced pro-mics use Phantom power.
This type of mic is supplied DC from the mic socket and is generally
termed Plug-in Power, of course not all devices provide this mic
power.

That's pretty hilarious. I can see them wanting to disrupt, like
shaking things up in the market, but that's still an odd choice of
words. As you allude to, it has negative connotations as opposed to
 positive.

Someone has mistranslated something. They probably mean disruptive.

 B

In fact, i just looked and it (now) says disruptive.

 B

Your point is... ? What's the basic difference in meaning between
disrupt, disrupting, and disruptive? They all mean the same thing to
me, except for how they fit into a sentence grammatically.

distributing would make more sense - not to mention profit.

 Hello,

I thought I would introduce myself. Several years ago I was an active
member of this list. I have stayed active shooting Pentax while I have been

It will take me a bit to get back up to speed and to see who might still be
around from when I was on the list. Thanks for allowing me to come back to
 the list.

Being prosecuted and being convicted are two entirely separate things.
The Serious Farce Office has a pretty poor record for completion of
prosecutions in complex cases like this, never mind success.

Pentax K1000 tatoo

2013-09-05 Thread Igor Roshchin

I am not a fan of any tatoos.
This, however, looks funny... The fact that someone wants to make such a
tatoo is strange enough (to me).

But I am sure some PDMLers would have fun looking at these photos:
