K-30 vs K-50 vs....?

2013-09-19 Thread Christine Nielsen
Hi all,

A friend of mine has been looking for counsel on cameras... He is a
fellow hockey (and soccer and football) parent, whose ps isn't
getting the job done, and is ready to move up to a dslr. He has been
looking at the Nikon Pentax offerings primarily, and seems to be
settling on Pentax. Low light performance is critical for him --
he'll be using the kit lenses (55-200, 55-300), trying to get
decent images in a hockey rink.

So... the question is, which model? I'm not turning up much
difference between the K-30 K-50... is there? For that matter, will
prices on the k-5/k-5ll come to a comparable point (soonish)?

I haven't used the k-30 or k-50 myself... But, I know that the
collective experience wisdom of the List will have something to say
on this... Thanks in advance for your thoughts!

rear lens cap. Otherwise I have found nothing obviously wrong.

A reasonably clear night tonight so I tried the lens out on the moon.
This is a full frame image - no cropping. Some tweeking of the exposure, very
 minimal sharpening and noise reduction.

Re: K-30 vs K-50 vs....?

2013-09-19 Thread Darren Addy
I can't speak to either the K-30 or the K-50, but I can tell you that
the low-light autofocus performance of the K-5II is NOTICEABLY better
than the K-5 (which is still a camera that I would recommend without
reservation). I'm not sure if the K-50 shares that improvement, or
not. But the K-5, K-5II and K-5IIs are all 14 bit systems, where (I
believe) the rest are 12-bit. The sensor is good enough to take
advantage of that extra headroom in the form of dynamic range (and
some better low ISO performance). The K-30 and the K-50 share a 13EV
dynamic range, where the K-5II is 14.1 (that's more than a full stop
better).

I think the K-5 is a Best Buy right now (you can still find the body
for around $650)
The K-5II is about another $250 ($896 at BH)
and if he wanted to spend another $250 I would tell him to also
consider the Nikon D7100 which is like getting the K-5II performance
with a 24MP body ($1149 for the body).

Re: K-30 vs K-50 vs....?

2013-09-19 Thread P.J. Alling
The K-30 and K-50 are essentially the same camera with different body
shells. Both use the SAFOX IXi+ focus module. So all things being
equal they should have the auto focus performance. If it's between
those two models which you'd choose is a matter of taste.

I can't say if either will give good results auto focusing those lenses
in dim light, but while they will be better than a PS the best way to
improve auto focus is to use fast(ish) lenses. Zooms are convenient, but
a used FA 135mm 2.8 would probably cost less used than the 55-300 will
new, and run rings around it in auto focus. Just something to think about.

The K-5 is already in the K-50 ball park at a number of web retailers,
but I don't think it improves much in auto focus over the K-30/50. The
K-5II, which by all accounts is a vast improvement over the K-5, is
about $250 more than the K-50 if you find can find a deal.

Looks like a potentially real leak regarding the new flagship product
(20MP, two-card-slots) has surfaced, with the source claimed to be
someone at the Pentax factory in the Phillipines:
http://www.dpreview.com/forums/thread/3548509

Another user's comment on page 3 also says that a Ricoh rep was at the
local camera store and was excited about the new high-end aps-c

Apparently the originating source was also correct on the K-50/K-500 a
month in front of those cameras being announced.

I agree with Bruce lose that outcropping at the top and I think it's a
great photo. When I first went to page I thought the bottom one was an
abstract macro of some unknown object.

I like almost full frame. Crop the tiny bit on the top right off. As for
color - it is ok for me. I like the shot. The water flow is well executed.
Nice work.

Dan,

On this shot, and many of your other ones (especially from Hawaii), the
colors (especially blues) are way over-saturated on all 3 of the calibrated
monitors I use (work, home, laptop). In this shot, the agents' computers
and part of the vest of the guy closest to the camera are completely blown
out--sheets of intense blue with no detail at all.

Are you shooting jpgs or RAW? If the latter, is your monitor
calibrated?

Cheers,

If the leak is accurate and the new Pentax is a 20MP, I just don't see
that either the Sony or the Samsung APS-C sensors of that size

might be the Sony Samsung cameras are 12 bit, where the Pentax will
presumably be 14.

I feel that BW can handle a certain amount of flat light if contrast is

Re: K-30 vs K-50 vs....?

Thanks, Darren.

I picked up a K-5lls about a month or two ago, but I haven't had to
use it for low-light/fast-action (hockey and indoor track seasons are
coming soon...) scenarios yet. I'm looking forward to it, though.

The K-5II is about another $250 ($896 at BH)
and if he wanted to spend another $250 I would tell him to also
consider the Nikon D7100 which is like getting the K-5II performance
with a 24MP body ($1149 for the body).

he'll be using the kit lenses (55-200, 55-300), trying to get

So... the question is, which model? I'm not turning up much

Are you shooting jpgs or RAW? If the latter, is your monitor

I can't say if either will give good results auto focusing those lenses in
dim light, but while they will be better than a PS the best way to improve
auto focus is to use fast(ish) lenses. Zooms are convenient, but a used FA
135mm 2.8 would probably cost less used than the 55-300 will new, and run
rings around it in auto focus. Just something to think about.

The K-5 is already in the K-50 ball park at a number of web retailers, but I
don't think it improves much in auto focus over the K-30/50. The K-5II,

OT: time lapse with DSLR on slider

2013-09-19 Thread steve harley

came across an unusual craigslist posting:

http://denver.craigslist.org/pho/4076504336.html

i am not shilling for this guy, i just thought it was interesting … in case the
ad gets deleted, the text is below; the link to a video the kinds of shots you
will be able to get, together with the ad gave me some insight into how simple
movements create dynamism in time lapse shots:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JXOXns_gx8k

that didn't play correctly for me, but the vimeo version did:

http://vimeo.com/29950141

(i suggest turning the soundtrack off; Dustin Farrell is not Godfrey Reggio)

main text of the ad:

I'm selling my DIY timelapse slider today and I just wanted to give you as much
information about it as I can so that you know what you'll be getting. About 2
months of design and $1000 went into this slider but its time to get ride of it
and move on, hence the low price! Here we go!

The track is made of aluminum and so is the camera base. (See photos) on the
camera base is a high torque motor, and computer main board wired to a few
switches to control the slider direction and speed. Speaking of speed you can
set the speed of your camera to make it across the slider anywhere between 50
min to 7 minutes. The belt (made my GATES) is attached to the motor and weaves
through two gear pulleys to keep form slipping during use and ruining your
timelapse. Also on the camera base is a tripod ball head for your camera that
comes with a quick release plate for your camera. I am also going to include my
personal tripods and clips so you can shoot with this slider where ever you
want. I have a battery that was used with this slider but it doesn't work so
you will need to buy one just like it so you can shoot for day and even weeks
without charging it.

I am going to include a link to a you tube video showing the kinds of shots you
will be able to get with this slider.

Keep in mind most sliders are only 3 to 6ft and will run you $900 to $1,500.
Some pro sliders can also be $2,000. Save some money and time and just enjoy
photography and taking photos with this slider dolly.

Re: PESO: Thistle Gate (BW)

2013-09-19 Thread Ann Sanfedele
I thought I had commented on this yesterday... now I'm scrolling through
a lot comments about it and don't see my response at all.

What I thought I wrote was to agree with Rick that it would work better
in BW. I used to carry two cameras everywhere, in the film days... with

bW in one and PKR 64 in the other. sometimes if something was really
a strong subject matter Id make sure I got photos in both just in case
but always once the sun rose high in the sky I put the color film camera
aside and put an orange or red filter on the lens on the camera

with the TRI-X in it.

The color version of the old house is almost monochrome already, just a
flat boring color.

I like the BW version of this a lot...

As to Alan's comment - don't assume too quickly that the house was
abandoned.. the owner may have been forced out by the highway
builders.. or simply died there with no one to inherit it. and as Jack
said, the well may have run dry either metaphorically or literally.

Might be interesting to actually research its history. There are many
such buildings across the country - some could be easily 100 years old,
out west, in a desert climate they have survived as structures but
would not suit for habitation. I'm sure there are residents there -
just not those of are species - although, at sometimes they may
prove so for hitch hikers, backpackers, homeless transients, and
some in areas where no one should have built anything.

(yup - just had a nap)

Re: Free DXO Filmpack 3 Essential Edition

While I was at the camera store the other day spending all of my money,
a guy came in with an old camera he didn't know how to get open, but he
was pretty sure there was a roll of film in it.

There was - a pre-DX coding cartridge of Kodachrome II - K-12 process
no ASA number on the cartridge.
