Nice write-up on the O-GPS1/Astrotracer by a user in Scotland
Last week I tripped across a fellow from Scotland's work with the O-GPS1/Astrotracer on Flickr and asked him a few questions. He replied that he would do a little write-up. Hi all, A friend of mine has been looking for counsel on cameras... He is a fellow hockey (and soccer and football) parent, whose ps isn't getting the job done, and is ready to move up to a dslr. Re: K-30 vs K-50 vs....?
I can't speak to either the K-30 or the K-50, but I can tell you that the low-light autofocus performance of the K-5II is NOTICEABLY better than the K-5 (which is still a camera that I would recommend without reservation). I'm not sure if the K-50 shares that improvement, or not. But the K-5, K-5II and K-5IIs are all 14 bit systems, where (I believe) the rest are 12-bit. The sensor is good enough to take advantage of that extra headroom in the form of dynamic range (and some better low ISO performance). The K-30 and the K-50 share a 13EV dynamic range, where the K-5II is 14.1 (that's more than a full stop better). I think the K-5 is a Best Buy right now (you can still find the body for around $650) The K-5II is about another $250 ($896 at BH) and if he wanted to spend another $250 I would tell him to also consider the Nikon D7100 which is like getting the K-5II performance with a 24MP body ($1149 for the body). Re: K-30 vs K-50 vs....?
The K-30 and K-50 are essentially the same camera with different body shells. Both use the SAFOX IXi+ focus module. So all things being equal they should have the auto focus performance. If it's between those two models which you'd choose is a matter of taste. I can't say if either will give good results auto focusing those lenses in dim light, but while they will be better than a PS the best way to improve auto focus is to use fast(ish) lenses. Zooms are convenient, but a used FA 135mm 2.8 would probably cost less used than the 55-300 will new, and run rings around it in auto focus. Just something to think about. The K-5 is already in the K-50 ball park at a number of web retailers, but I don't think it improves much in auto focus over the K-30/50. The K-5II, which by all accounts is a vast improvement over the K-5, is about $250 more than the K-50 if you find can find a deal. Looks like a potentially real leak regarding the new flagship product (20MP, two-card-slots) has surfaced, with the source claimed to be someone at the Pentax factory in the Phillipines: http://www.dpreview.com/forums/thread/3548509 Another user's comment on page 3 also says that a Ricoh rep was at the local camera store and was excited about the new high-end aps-c camera that is going to be announced in early Oct. Re: What's next?
If the leak is accurate and the new Pentax is a 20MP, I just don't see that either the Sony or the Samsung APS-C sensors of that size outperform the K-5/II/IIS. The Canon's is even worse. Re: K-30 vs K-50 vs....?
Thanks, Darren. I picked up a K-5lls about a month or two ago, but I haven't had to use it for low-light/fast-action (hockey and indoor track seasons are coming soon...) scenarios yet. I'm looking forward to it, though. :) -c On Thu, Sep 19, 2013 at 8:42 AM, Darren Addy pixelsmi...@gmail.com wrote: I can't speak to either the K-30 or the K-50, but I can tell you that the low-light autofocus performance of the K-5II is NOTICEABLY better than the K-5 (which is still a camera that I would recommend without reservation). (See photos) on the camera base is a high torque motor, and computer main board wired to a few switches to control the slider direction and speed. Speaking of speed you can set the speed of your camera to make it across the slider anywhere between 50 min to 7 minutes. Re: PESO: Thistle Gate (BW)
I thought I had commented on this yesterday... now I'm scrolling through a lot comments about it and don't see my response at all. What I thought I wrote was to agree with Rick that it would work better in BW. I used to carry two cameras everywhere, in the film days... with bW in one and PKR 64 in the other. sometimes if something was really a strong subject matter Id make sure I got photos in both just in case but always once the sun rose high in the sky I put the color film camera aside and put an orange or red filter on the lens on the camera with the TRI-X in it. The color version of the old house is almost monochrome already, just a flat boring color. I like the BW version of this a lot... As to Alan's comment - don't assume too quickly that the house was abandoned.. the owner may have been forced out by the highway builders.. or simply died there with no one to inherit it. and as Jack said, the well may have run dry either metaphorically or literally. Might be interesting to actually research its history. There are many such buildings across the country - some could be easily 100 years old, out west, in a desert climate they have survived as structures but would not suit for habitation. I'm sure there are residents there - just not those of are species - although, at sometimes they may prove so for hitch hikers, backpackers, homeless transients, and some in areas where no one should have built anything.
