We had a period of about 30-45 minutes last night with clear skies. Otherwise
we had fog, mist, low clouds, or all three at once. But no rain after Friday
afternoon!

The sky shot is from the campground during the clear period. No
astro-technology involved. K-3, DA21mm, ISO3200, 20sec exposure at 5.6 I think.
Then .5-1.0 extra exposure steps in LR.

I seldom get use of ultra-wide lenses. And when I tried Pentax 12-24

However, in my two recent trips twice I wished I had something wider

Still, it probably wouldn't justify for me buying a new lens now.

But I thought there might be somebody here who also missed the news.

K-5 hardware bug (literally)

2014-06-01 Thread Richard Womer
I had time for an hour's photo walk with my K-5 this morning, and about halfway
through noticed something moving in the viewfinder.

It was an insect, oval, about the size of the little red autofocus indicators,
roaming about the top (inaccessible) surface of the finder screen.

This evening I'm going to go after it, if it's still there.

Weatherproof, heatproof, coldproof, dustproof, shock resistant... but not
bug-proof!

Re: Hands-on Lightroom training?

2014-06-01 Thread John

Check & see if a local Community College might offer Adult Continuing
Education courses.

Here's one from Wake Tech where I live:

http://ncce.waketech.edu/course/photoshop-lightroom-4

It's five 1-1/2 hour hands on sessions for $75.00. This particular
instance of the course is Tu & Th mornings, but I'm sure it's also
offered at night sometimes. I think it's a whole lot better bargain than
a one-day $500 course.

If you buy the recommended (NOT mandatory) text, you can continue to use
it as a reference if you have questions after the course is over.

I bet there's a Community College where you are that will offer
conveniently scheduled classes.

I’m wondering about the availability of hands-on training in Lightroom. I have
a sneaking suspicion that even if I limited myself to just those topics in the
video tutorials of most immediate relevance to me, the retention would not be
that great. I imagine being coached through actual processes would have a more

Any recommendations? Ideas about costs? Availability to me here in Atlanta?

I prefer #1 for better subject isolation. The other 3 have too much
clutter in the background. Maybe you could get something out of #4
after cropping a bit from left and blurring the background in PS.

I saw Mark, Ted, Stan & Nico, but PDML was kind of under-represented
this year.

I left a bit early because I am still not feeling well. I've been having
sinus problems for a week or so. I have medication, but it's not working
very fast.

I'm also the one who lives closest, so if I put the pedal to the metal,
I can make it home in about 4 hours.

Re: 10mm lens in Pentax K mount

2014-06-01 Thread John
You might look at Sigma's 10-20 zoom. It's available in a fully
automatic auto-focus *Pentax* Mount.

I seldom get use of ultra-wide lenses. And when I tried Pentax 12-24
couple of years ago, I found that it was too wide for my typical use.
However, in my two recent trips twice I wished I had something wider
than 17mm of my 17-70 and not fisheye (8mm).
Still, it probably wouldn't justify for me buying a new lens now.

But I thought there might be somebody here who also missed the news.

Cheers,

yes, along with the 105mm and 50mm Sigma EX macros (and the DG versions which
differ mainly in coatings), it is "full frame"; i like the 105mm i have quite a

more generally useful, but if it is like Sigma's 105mm, it will suffer from
poor contrast on shots with incident light

"Mind" has a different meaning to most Americans, something like
"dislike." As in "Do you mind if I smoke?"

One can, of course, "watch the gap" without being cautious. "Beware

It is a highly regarded lens and -I believe- it is full frame capable
(like some Pentax DA lenses). It should not be difficult to find.

I also have Pentax F 50mm f/2.8 macro (1:1) which is great for macro.
However, the barrel travels only a few millimeters
between the macro range and infinity.
This makes its routine use impractical; correct focusing is almost
accidental (on K5).

Vivitar Series 1 105mm f/2.8 is optically marvelous.
It is, however, to heavy for "routine, hand-held use.
Also, it lacks AF, if you are interested.
