PESO: Melbourne Skyline

A view of Melbourne from the balcony at the Shrine of Remembrance. This is the
opposite view of one of the photos that Pete linked to.

I took a photo later with better light but it was off-centre.

Thanks Ann & Dan for commenting.

And Ann, the 600 was tripod mounted - I was concentrating on some egrets
when this cardinal landed on the railing to my right - I swung the lens
around and was able to capture several shots of him.

The 600 is heavy enough that I have issues just mounting it to the head.

(Just in case, - note that this is not the "Plus" model that has a geared
central column, here it is manual.)

I did some research of the reviews. It looks like a very steady and
convenient tripod at a great price. (It is a bit heavy, - around 8 lbs /
almost 4 kgs.) And having used a Vanguard photo bag for almost 2 years
now, I am impressed with the thoughtfullness of the design by this
company.

I almost decided to buy it, as a replacement to my old original
aluminum TiltAll is getting too old [*]. But then, I

decided that it would be even heavier than the TiltAll ( 8+ vs 6 lbs),
and I have a comparably heavy (~8 lbs without the 3-lbs head) video
Manfrotto tripod.

FS Friday: Anyone interested in a slide scanner?

2014-11-21 Thread Mark Roberts
I'm trying to clear out space here and the Minolta Scan Multi II is
going on the block soon. On eBay if no one here wants it.

What it is:
Minolta Scan Multi II slide/film scanner
Scans 35mm and medium format film
2880dpi for 35mm
1125dpi for med format
SCSI interface

Extras:
FS1E SCSI-to-FireWire converter
Bulk slide loader for 35mm - holds 50 slides

Details:
There are a couple of reasons I'm selling this. Firstly, the med.
format resolution is barely better than the JPEG scan option I always
order when I get my medium format film developed, so I don't bother
with MF scanning any more. Secondly, as far as I can tell there are no
64-bit drivers available for this scanner – I'm currently using it
with my laptop but I'm planning on upgrading that to a 64-bit OS soon.

The real reason for owning this scanner is the bulk slide loader. It
was originally a $600.00 option! Yeah, the bulk feeder without the
scanner was six hundred bucks (scanner was about 2k new but I bought
it used for around 1200... then paid for the bulk feeder new). Works
great, though: Just load up 50 slides, start it up and go to bed. In
the morning you'll have 50 scanned slides.

Downsides:
Needs 32-bit OS, as mentioned.
SCSI Interface. I'm including a SCSI-to-FireWire converter which works
brilliantly but is a real bear to configure. Once you get it running
it's great. Otherwise you'll have to buy a SCSI card.
I think the OEM software only runs on Windows XP – In Windows 7 I've
been using Vuescan Professional instead.

This is not a scanner for someone who wants to "plug and play", it's a
project for someone who has the knowledge and willingness to put some
work into installing and configuring computer stuff and enjoys
tinkering.

$300.00 plus shipping takes it all.

Re: OT: I am SOOOOOOOOOO happy!

2014-11-21 Thread John

Just in case anyone is even mildly interested ...

I finally just gave up. It wouldn't install the BIOS update, just hung.
Looking into the dump files, the BIOS update might have been contingent
to Vista SP2 being installed.

Service Pack 2 error-ed out with a message saying it required Service
Pack 1 to be installed first. Vista Service Pack 1 wouldn't install. On
the "about" page it showed Vista w\SP1.

Final verdict - bad mother-board & out of warranty with Compacq/HP.

It might have been a corrupt Vista preload on the recovery partition,
but I think it got so dirty inside before I got hold of it that it
overheated & damaged the memory controller chip.

I managed to rescue my sister's photos & documents, salvaged the
hard-disk & DVD drive.

I also removed the new memory I'd bought for it, although I don't have
anything that can use 2x2GB DDR2 RAM. I just didn't feel like junking
brand new memory even if it is totally useless.

The carcass is going to recycling.

From: Paul

Is everything in the BIOS OK? Can you update the BIOS to the latest
version without running the OS?

You might try creating a Knoppix disc and booting from that. You might
have to go into the BIOS and change the boot order so it looks for the
Knoppix disc first.

If that runs OK it would seem the problem is in the HDD. You said you
had managed to rescue the data, but Knoppix will allow you to mount the
HDD to see if it's working OK or to move data to another disc.

Just mentioning this 'cause Knoppix has saved my bacon a couple times...

NOT!

I've spent the last week trying to ressurect my sister's computer
(Compaq Presario manufactured by HP). It had crashed on her and she
couldn't get it to boot.

I managed to rescue her data from the hard-drive. While I had the
hard-drive out, I gave the inside of the case a thorough cleaning. Put
the hard-drive back in & tried to do a system restore to return the
operating system, Vista Home Basic, to Out Of The Box condition.

The diagnostics included with the system restore passed the hard-drive,
motherboard & CPU, but failed the memory. I replaced the memory.

I've also run diagnostics of my own - 20+ passes of Memtest86+ on the
new memory & Spinright 6.0 on the hard-drive. It takes about 24 hours
for each of those to run to completion, so that's 2 days right there.
Both diagnostis completed without finding any errors.

Still, the computer kept crashing when I tried to run Windows Update. I
finally overcame that by booting into Safe Mode and running the Norton
Removal Tool. After that I was able to run Windows Update from the
Control Panel and install updates 2 & 3 at a time. Running it from the
taskbar crashed the computer again.

I've spent 5 days downloading & installing updates, rebooting and
downloading & installing updates again.

I got down to one last update that wouldn't install, and according to
Microsoft support (via Google) I needed to install Service Pack 2.
Looking at the requirements for Service Pack 2, I have to have Service
Pack 1 installed in order to install Service Pack 2.

Service Pack 1 installation failed. It gave an error code, but before I
could write it down it flashed to a BSOD, which also shut down &
rebooted before I could write down the error number. It wasn't one I'd
seen before.

And now, it won't start again. I get a BSOD & reboot OR a black screen &
reboot OR it gets to the logon screen & goes black/BSOD when I enter the
password. I can't even get into Safe Mode.
Safe Mode with Networking goes black & reboots as soon as the last
driver loads; Safe Mode without networking BSODs & reboots ... in either
case it doesn't pause long enough for me to write the Stop Code down.

Thank you for listening. I don't feel any better, but at least I've been
able to vent.

The copy of this book that I ordered arrived last evening. Great
stuff! A fascinating story of Mortensen's life, his career as a
photographer and teacher (he ran a school for years in Laguna Beach)
and artist. The section on the techniques he used, some of which he
invented, is thorough and detailed. His wonderful images are well
reproduced.

Thirty bucks well spent. I needed an early Christmas present and
distraction anyway.

self-defined fundamentals, by a tendency to sweeping condemnation of

Just confirmed in my Bird Book. Thanks.

Nice image, with a great pose, and the foliage adds a lot.

I don't think it's a bobolink, however:

More like a sparrow, perhaps a chipping sparrow:

I like the way the bird really stands out from the background. Sharp

Peso-Bobolink?

2014-11-21 Thread Jack Davis

This was a member of a small flock of variously marked smallish birds flitting
about in a Japanese Maple near the patio.
Was a completely overcast, giant soft box day. great lighting, but a little
dim, in addition to the background redwoods
that slowed the shutter. Hand held DA55~300at300 and ISO of 800 didn't quite do
it. Hoping they return today.

Like this, David. Composition and exposure especially well done.
It does, however, give me a slight feeling of a left lean.(?)

I had just taken a photo of this scene under flat lighting, then the sun came
out so I quickly took another.
