Hi

Knysna is in the western cape South Africa. It is part of an area called the
garden route, lots of forest, lakes and mountains.

The fellow at the reptile centre in Alice Springs pointed out that you have to
try pretty hard to be killed by a snake in Australia. The venom may be highly
toxic but the snakes have very short fangs so it takes a long time for the
venom to get anywhere important, and immobilising the limb buys a lot more time
again. They won’t get through clothing so if it’s not too hot, trousers &
shoes should be all you need. Once you do get medical help they have kits to
identify the venom so the correct treatment can be applied.

The spiders though… they still scare the crap out of me :)

Dave

Another excellent selection.

Two favourites for me, although it is so hard to pick them; Ken's 'Lake

actually there, and Eric's 'Blue Pond' because I can imagine this enlarged
and framed on a wall in my house.

I just switched my Mac (running OS X v10.10.3 and Lightroom 6.0.1) to 24 hour
clock. I then started up Lightroom and all the hours were shown in 24 hour time
when I browsed the Metadata panel. I quit LR, switched back to 12 hour clock,
and started up LR again … all hours were reported in 12 hour notation.

So … it might be an LR4 bug, or perhaps you didn't restart LR after changing
the system preferences.

Replacing the 16-45 with a 35/2.4 I have absolutely no problem.

I feel really stupid, but i have no idea what’s going on. Any clues?

I sounds as if the pin on the back of the lens mount that opens the aperture
(as the lens is mounted) is either broken off or bent in some way. Can you
compare it with the 35/2.4?

Actually, I’m responding here to several of the suggestions. And first, thanks
to everyone who responded.

I double checked mounting. Still have the problem. With the lens off the
camera, pushing the lever the aperture opens and closes smoothly. When I
compare the levers on the 16-45/4 and the 35/2.4 the one on the 16-45/4 is ben
in towards the center of the lens. It almost comes into contact with with metal
shield just inside it.

Should I try bending the lever back to a position similar to that on the
35/2.4? Or should I just take it back to KEH?

I would try gently bending it back to position and save the time and
money of shipping it back. You could also call and ask. There is a
small, but non-zero chance that bending it back could break off the lever.

It would also depend on whether you have pliers that are appropriate to
the job of grabbing it so that it bends back at the point that it was
bent in the first place.

Re: Baffled by my 16-45/4

Mount it on the camera and look through the front of the lens to see if
the aperture is open. Given that it is used, you just bought it, and it
is malfunctioning in a manner that could not be caused by user error -
that's a strong case for immediately returning it.

Good luck!

Replacing the 16-45 with a 35/2.4 I have absolutely no problem.

I feel really stupid, but i have no idea what’s going on. Any clues?

Thanks, Igor. Only problem in my case is that I’m in Atlanta and I
picked up the lens at KEH instead of having it shipped to me and
they’re way out in the suburbs on the other side of town. If you

Yes - it's disappointing when something like this happens and, if the
lens were mine, I'd just bend the pin back.

However, mine's an older lens not under warranty. In your case I'd
probably let KEH deal with it and put up with the delay.

Re: Who to do repairs?

2015-06-04 Thread Larry Colen
When my K-5 died, they charged about half as much as CRIS would have to
repair it, which unlike CRIS was less than the replacement cost at the
time. I ended up buying a K-5II, had CRIS send the camera to Precision,
who repaired it, and in the process I had them remove the IR filter. A
few months later the camera died and they were unable to repair it, but
gave me a satisfactory refund. I don't know if they would have been
able to repair it if they had been the factory shop at the time, or how
much it would have ended up costing.

It seems that the best service that I had was when the repairs were done
in house in Denver. Each outsourcing since seems to have been focused
more on economics than quality.

Matthew Hunt wrote:

My K-5 II is at Precision now for a broken flash pop-up button (under

in their system on May 14, was "in repair" for a few days, then
"waiting for parts" for a week or so, and has been back "in repair"
since then.

I used their contact form today to ask how much longer it will be, but
I haven't received a response yet. I don't know if I will or not,
because I used the form twice to ask about repair pricing for the
16-45 and never got a response.

To their credit, they're also the repair service for Olympus, and they
repaired my E-PL5 quickly for a defective control dial.

Re: Who to do repairs?

2015-06-04 Thread Matthew Hunt
My K-5 II is at Precision now for a broken flash pop-up button (under
extended warranty). It arrived at their facility on May 13, was logged
in their system on May 14, was "in repair" for a few days, then
"waiting for parts" for a week or so, and has been back "in repair"

Re: Baffled by my 16-45/4

2015-06-04 Thread Zos Xavius
No need to mount the lens. If you toggle the aperture lever does the
iris open? Smoothly? If not, the lens is at fault. Also check the
lever to see if it has been bent or anything. It can be physically
bent past the point of catching on the aperture lever the camera has
built in. If the lever seems fine then its possible you might not be
turning it enough, but I'm kind of assuming you have mounted it
correctly.

1) Is it mounted properly? Turned all the way on the mount as far as it will go.
2) Simply faulty?

They are, I think, the only two possibilities.

The default for a Pentax lens (i.e. when it's off the camera) is for
the aperture to close down to the smallest setting. As you mount the
lens on the camera the little metal lever (the "stop-down" coupler)
engages with the mount and opens the aperture fully. If the lens isn't
rotated all the way when mounting then the aperture won't be fully
opened up. You can see this happening if you take the lens cap off
before mounting. See how the two lenses compare in that regard.

It sounds like the aperture is not opening up as it should when it's
mounted to the camera. The 16-45 doesn't have any controls on it that
would prevent the aperture from opening, so you're not doing anything
wrong.

With the lens off the camera, looking at the mount end (rear) of the
lens with the red dot at 12:00, there's a lever at 3:00. If you push
that with your finger, you should be able to see the aperture open and
close. Maybe exercising it a little will help.

Otherwise, I think it may need to go back to KEH, unfortunately. At
least you bought from a reputable vendor.

I sounds as if the pin on the back of the lens mount that opens the
aperture (as the lens is mounted) is either broken off or bent in some
way. Can you compare it with the 35/2.4?

June PUG is up!!

2015-06-04 Thread Brian Walters

G'day all

A bit of a slow start but a rush of submissions in the last day or two
boosted the number of images to 23. A great effort.

As usual - difficult to pick favourites but I think Rick's 'Moonlight'
takes the prize (not that there is one...).

I also really like Ken's 'Lake Superior', Ann's 'Hawley Lake', Eric's
'Blue Pond' and Christine's "Lake Michigan'.

You'll find the gallery here:

http://pug.komkon.org/

(you may need to refresh your browser if you see the previous gallery there).

Note: The automated submission process usually works well but it's not
infallible. So, if you made a submission and you don't see it in the
gallery, let me know.

+

Next up is the annual 'Open Gallery'. No hold's barred - any topic
you like provided, of course, that the usual condition of either the
camera or lens being Pentax is met.

Full Submissions Guidelines here:

http://pug.komkon.org/general/autosubmit.html

You can submit here:

Nominal closing date is 30 June.

Where did this myth about dangerous Australia wildlife start.

Last time I looked we don't have bears, panthers, lions, tigers,
wolves, cougars, leopards or Hippopotamuses (HippopotamI??).

Yes we have some venomous snakes (hardly unique there), venomous
spiders (ditto), crocodiles (ditto), box jellyfish (ditto), sharks
(ditto).

About the only dangerous thing in the Australian bush is the chance of
being bulldozed over by a galloping wombat or being pissed on my a

The bit about being ruled by a classy lady in the UK is, sadly, true.

Very nice.

Most of my peonies came into bloom while I was away, but we had three
nice red ones left. They are always attractive and pleasant, if they

to my peony plants in the past, but fortunately not this year.

Is that your manor house in the background? Very nice . . . .

In a shoot post-mortem video chat with the model the other day, I
remarked that if I just went and deleted all the work from the shoot
it would _still_ have been a very successful shoot because we both
learned so much from it. She roared, "Hey! not so fast!" :)

Yeah. I wrote this on Saturday, and just realized I sent it in HTML so
it didn't go out. Sorry.

In Windows at least, it appears to honor the system preference for time
display.

If you want to change to 24-hour time systemwide, here's how you do it in
Windows 7:

Start the "Region and Language" control panel (for example, by hitting the
Windows key and starting to type "Region and Language").

In the "Formats" tab, set the Short time to "H:mm" or "HH:mm" depending on
whether you want to display single-digit hours with a leading zero. Set the
Long time to "H:mm:ss" or "HH:mm:ss". Click "Apply" or "OK".

Lightroom should recognize the change the next time it's started.

To go back to 12-hour time, set the formats to "h:mm tt" and "h:mm:ss tt"
(or the "hh" version for a leading zero).

I'me certain you are correct, Eric. The display next to the lad had
railroad brochures, but other than the word "railroad" I could not
discern any meaning in them. Nara is the most popular day trip from
Kyoto, and we considered going there but ran out of time.

Why not a deer for a mascot, instead of a boy with deer antlers? I
guess that would not be "kawaii" enough.
