PESO - Awesome: no tears on crocodile monitor

2015-12-05 Thread Igor PDML-StR

A thoughtfully-looking guy with a funny-sounding name:
http://42graphy.org/misc/CrocodileMonitor_IR29379.jpg

No, it is not a crocodile, nor a part of crocodile's computer.
Rather, it is believed to be warning about crocodiles that are nearby...

And at Moody Gardens' Rainforest Pyramid, it is called Mr. Awesome.
http://blog.moodygardens.com/tag/crocodile-monitor/
And formally it is called "Varanus Salvadorii":
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Varanus_salvadorii

All comments are welcome!

PESO:

2015-12-05 Thread Daniel J. Matyola
One of the images I considered for the December PUG, "TOOLS"

This a remnant of an old dock on Kewakapu Beach, Maui. Depending on
how much of the beach has been washed away by winter storms, at times
this is all that remains; at other times, a foot or two of concrete
and steel emerge from the fine sand. This was apparently a dock where
cattle from the ranches on Haleakala Volcano were loaded onto boats or
barges to take them to Lahaina, on the other side of the island, or to
Honolulu. Cattle was a big business on the island, and still is
today.

I think it's a brilliant photo!

However...

Would you consider cropping out that building on the left? Just turn your
"landscape" orientation into a square frame. I think it might give it even more
impact.

Or maybe it's just me.

Love that building, BTW. Very much in the "International Style" of Modern. How
old is it, do you know? Looks very 50s or 60s.

Cheers,

cattle from the ranches on Haleakala Volcano were loaded onto boats or

Honolulu. Cattle was a big business on the island, and still is

No Frank, it's me too. The guy's head or camera needs to be on the intersection

That's a contemporary style. There's a lot of them like that going up in
London. It's generally a nice style I think, with nice proportions, but they'll
overdo it as usual and we'll all get sick of it.

Interesting the 2 camps - to have the building on the left or not.

My take - I like it as is because it's not conforming. However, I hate
the converging verticals in this instance. I'd change the perspective. YMMV

Interesting subject Boris but the composition needs improvement IMO.
Not sure what you want me to look at. Perhaps if more of the building on the LH

The blank space between the 2 buildings is a big negative for me.

It's hard to guess distances with ultra-wide-angle unless you're very familiar
with a particular focal length on a format.
I was approximately 3' to 3.5' from the near tree; I focused just behind it to
make sure that things were still reasonably sharp at the trees in the back
plane. :-)

Was fiddling with some camera settings while shooting the attached.
Didn't experience any revaluations, but the target scene seemed pleasing.

I'm not winging my hands with hope for approval, just felt it was time to
put "something" up.
If not worthy of comment, I won't wonder why. :)

California Sycamore … Good to know!

Jack: Aperture was f/8. With a 19mm lens on FF, 5 foot focus setting is the
hyperfocal at f/8, netting 2.5' to Infinity in-focus.

Well, OK. Not being aware of your
distance from the near tree especially,
thought I'd assume it to be generous.
I occasionally us hyper focal and rough it out without really missing
an aperture ring.
Thanks.

Wonderful image!

I agree with Jack that the two tiny people elevate the scene to an
even higher level. I also agree with Ann that cropping just a small
slice off the bottom might strengthen the composition.
