With my limited exposure to advanced maths - I guess at:
Two apple pies plus a cup of carbonised water (supposed to equal coffee) is
greater than or equal to
two slices of one/seventh capsicum (?) on toast and a quarter chicken plus
barbecue sauce and a
drink... the lower formula seems to say that a bar of chocolate multiplied by
some factor will lead
to an explosion!

Just a small clarification... Hebrew word "cos" means "cup" (as in cup of

The demo is somewhat limited. The newest "paid for" version - v3.7 -
will save as JPGs, TIFs, and PNGs. That's the one that will do batch

It's on sale for just a shade over 30 bucks; you can batch process with
it and it comes with a plug-in so you can call it up from within
Lightroom.

Interesting, I downloaded the demo and tried a couple of quick
experiments. It seems to do much more of the tone mapping by default,
rather than the Adobe simply expanding the dynamic range. A quick RTFM
seems to imply that it can generate the expanded range raw files, but
the free demo says that it only produces jpegs.

I'll have to take a closer look at it, but right now I don't have quite
enough free time to save that much time.

Check out EasyHDR...

It's on sale for just a shade over 30 bucks; you can batch process with
it and it comes with a plug-in so you can call it up from within Lightroom.

vibration related blur, but the long exposures came out OK.

The 150-450 zoom arrived today. It’s dark and gloomy in Michigan and
raining intermittently, so I resisted the urge to go looking for birds and
instead set the fine focus adjustment, then took a couple of sample pics.
My tests showed the lens was back focusing a bit, and a +4 setting brought
it right in throughout the range. It’s built like a tank, there’s no
wobble or looseness, and the zoom is as tight as any lens i’ve ever owned.
(One reviewer mentioned zoom creep. If that ever was a problem, it’s
definitely been resolved. You have to expend a fair amount of effort to
change the focal length.) I shot some dead ferns off a tripod at 450mm,

Invitation to annual Dec 25th gathering

2015-12-15 Thread Larry Colen
If you are within visiting distance of Santa Cruz CA and are at loose
ends on Dec 25th, Zab and I will be continuing our annual tradition of
inviting folks over for good food and company. At some point during the
day, there will be the traditional Whiskymas tasting of a wee dram or
two, at least for those of us who partake. Since Zab doesn't care for
scotch, she'll probably do her protest tasting of chocolate.

Re: DFA 150-450, first impression

2015-12-15 Thread Paul Stenquist
I’ve found that K3 images in general require very little sharpening, depending
on the lens of course. This seemed particularly true in comparison to K5
images. However, I always do some sharpening when working on a photo for
presentation. I work for a best subjective look, but do it at 100% on my 2560 x
1440 monitor. But for testing purposes, I don’t sharpen. That’s particularly
important when shooting for fine focus adjustment. Being able to clearly
differentiate the difference in sharpness is helpful. Here, I wanted to see
exactly what the lens and sensor could accomplish on their own. That being said
there’s some default sharpening in a photoshop RAW conversion. Mine is set at
Adobe’s default value, whatever that may be.

I recall your mentioning not having done any sharpening to the 150-450 examples

I think that some moderate sharpening certainly and even a tad of ERC "clarify"
would be
reasonable and more realistic.
I believe it's intended that digital images be sharpened.

The 150-450 zoom arrived today. It’s dark and gloomy in Michigan and raining
intermittently, so I resisted the urge to go looking for birds and instead set
the fine focus adjustment, then took a couple of sample pics. My tests showed
the lens was back focusing a bit, and a +4 setting brought it right in
throughout the range. It’s built like a tank, there’s no wobble or looseness,
and the zoom is as tight as any lens i’ve ever owned. (One reviewer mentioned
zoom creep. If that ever was a problem, it’s definitely been resolved. You have
to expend a fair amount of effort to change the focal length.) I shot some dead
ferns off a tripod at 450mm, ISO 3200, f5.6, 1/60th.

quick and dirty panorama exposure comparison

2015-12-15 Thread Larry Colen
Yesterday afternoon I made run to the hardware store and thought the
sunset clouds behind the old sawdust burning oven looked interesting.

I tried shooting a few panoramas, bracketing by +/- 2 stops.

Here are three different panos, one from the fastest shutter speed
(1/100), one from the middle (1/25) and one from an HDR from the fastest
and slowest (1/100+ 1/16), all processed in lightroom 6.

https://www.flickr.com/photos/ellarsee/sets/72157662305853371

My conclusions are:
1) the K-3 has enough dynamic range that for a lot of shots, if you're
willing to take the time HDR isn't completely necessary to get a decent
shot, particularly at ISO 100.

2) The lightroom auto-toning of HDR works a *LOT* better than their
normal auto-toning and get the exposure a lot closer to what I want.

3) While the final outcome in lightroom between HDR and not may not be
dramatic, it's a lot quicker to get the good results using their HDR.

4) I really ought to use a tripod at 1/6 second.

5) With the incredible dynamic range of the K-3 sensor, I really want
more than a maximum of two stops of bracketing per frame. Seriously,
when you compare the raw files two stops out of 12 or 14 are barely
noticeable. I want +/-4 stops.
Mind you, +/- 2 stops might make a difference if you're the sort of
tosser that shoots in jpeg.

6) With the dynamic range of the K-3, I really wish that Lightroom had a
larger range of adjustment on all of their sliders, particularly in HDR
mode.

7) I really wish that Lightroom let me select regions from various
frames that I explicitly want to include in or exclude from either HDR
or panorama frames.

8) I wish I could just point Lightroom to a folder/directory and just
tell it to make HDR versions of the lightest and darkest exposures of
all of the bracketed frames, rather than having to manually do each one.

I feel your pain.
As a part of a routine, I forbid all the software to update without my
permission.
For some pieces of software, this required some "hacking" (I closed
connections for Adobe products so they cannot connect the update server,
and also manually changed some registries.)

The only piece of software that is not completely blocked off is Viber.

As for Skype, - I am holding on to 6.20.0.104, while it lasts
(until one day, MS will close access for the older versions, as they've
done previously with version 4.x and 5.x).

The requirement for upgrading IE is wierd! It is probably due to the
latest version of Skype relying on MS' library that is implemented in IE.
(Oh, yes, they are trying to display links within the skype window now.

Lame and atrocious!

Re: PESO: Fishymas

2015-12-15 Thread David Mann
The stockings measure about 5" from top to bottom. We usually put treat-sized
chocolates in them (which we eat). They're hanging on a miniature plastic
Christmas tree next to the aquarium. I made 5 of them as we had 5 fish at the
time. Now we're down to 3 fish but I still hang all 5 socks because I wouldn't
want any less chocolate.

Fishymas is something I made up, it's just the fish version of Christmas :)
