I use the "mothership" strategy - take with my anything that I could need
and when I get to my destination deploy the gear that I want to use. I keep
an empty medium shoulder bag in the car that can at most accommodate one
larger and a couple of small ones, and it is what I take in the field. That
gives me the flexibility to respond to the circumstances I find.

I haven't enven put the shoulder strap onto the Nova Sport since all I
will ever do is carry it to the car and back.

My copy of this bag arrived today and this afternoon I transferred the
contents of the Lowepro Mini Trekker Classic to the new bag... and then
added a few lenses.

So at this point I have the bag loaded up with the following:

K-3 with attached DA 17-70 f4
Mz-S with attached FA 28-105 f4.5-5.6
IR converted Coolpix 6000
FA 20-35 f4
F 28 f2.8
FA 50 f1.7
DA 18-55
DFA 100 f2.8 macro
A* 200 f4 macro
Sigma EX 70-200 f2.8
Tokina ATX 400 f5.6
AF360FGZ flash

It's a well designed bag. Oddly, it subjectively appears (to me at
least) to be smaller than the Mini Trekker when it was fully loaded, but
the Nova Sport is holding 3 additional lenses (the A*200 macro, the
400mm f5.6, and the Da 18-55). I realized that I have almost as much in
it as I used to carry in a very large Tamrac 612, which has 12 lens
compartments vs the 8 in the Lowepro. The Nova Sport better
accommodates camera with lenses attached, so compartments aren't taken
up with camera bodies (which wasted some of the capacity on the Tramrac
612), but I am still carrying a few less lenses and a lot less
miscellaneous stuff.

The only cons would be that the Nova Sport is rather light on general
purpose compartments. I still use 35mm B film and had to cut back on
the number of filters I packed and also added an external film bag where
I was able to pack film in the general purpose compartment of the Mini
Trekker. I still have to figure out how to fit in some of my macro
brackets and a few other items.

But still - I'm figuring that the K-1 and attached zoom should fit where
the Mz-S is now so I can see this being my main bag for a while.

Thanks again for pointing this out, Igor!

store longer lenses (optionally with a body or two attached) and
larger external flash unit(s). My shorter lenses will probably remain
in my backpack bags. In addition it has a couple of pockets for
filters, ColorChecker, etc. It is even plenty tall enough for the
Bigma, with body attached (but hood must be reversed for storage).
All-in-all a handsome bag and a pretty good value even before the
rebate (IMHO).

Thanks again for passing along that link, Igor!

They gave me repeating error messages.
I noticed that the white slide lock is very bright and allmost transparent.
I guessed the lock is working with a light mechanism??
So, I took a permanent speed marker and painted the sliding lockers dark

Now I don't get error messages anymore.

No, but wheels already exist.

Yeah, but somehow I don't see me rolling that thing around in the woods !

If you don't want the weight then you just have to take along less
equipment.

I use a Tamrac backpack (it also can be carried as a shoulder bag) that
can haul all my most used lenses - 28-80 F, 70-210 F, 200 ED Macro, 300mm
FA, 16-50 DA*, 1.4 DA teleconvertor plus batteries, memory, filters &
cleaning accesories - about all I ever use in the field.

The 600 FA has its own Kinesis backpack that is very comfortable to wear but
weighs a ton, so it only goes out on special treks.

No, but wheels already exist. For example:
http://www.globalindustrial.com/p/material-handling/hand-trucks-dollies/hand-trucks-folding/folding-cargo-luggage-cart-80-lb-capacity

As previously mentioned in the thread, the bag will slip over pop-up
luggage handles, so it would also work on a cart like this.

Bags don't subtract anything from the total weight of your equipment.
If you don't want the weight then you just have to take along less
equipment. If the Nova Sport 35L is too large but you like the style
and arrangement, consider the smaller sibling: Nova Sport 17L.

My bag is pretty stuffed and weighs 25.5 lbs (but a good chunk of that
is the laptop and power supply.) I wouldn't want to carry that on my
shoulder very far, but I only really need to get it between
accommodations and car. It is more about keeping things protected,
organized and easy to get at than slogging around with, for me.

One concern that I have with the bag is that this large bag might have
a greater weight capacity than it's engineering can handle. The
shoulder strap hardware (the D-Ring on the bag and the clip on the
strap webbing) is plastic. (What kind, I'm not sure, but I think we
all have experienced plastic that gets brittle with age or cold
temperatures.) I would sure prefer stainless steel fittings there. The
D-Ring could probably be changed out, but I'm not sure about the strap
hardware. One would probably just have to find a better strap to
replace the plastic one if one wanted that peace of mind. I'd hate to
have a 25lb bag of equipment hitting pavement from my waist height.

2016-01-08 Thread Mark C
Probably overkill but I snapped a couple comparison shots between the
Nova Sport 35L and the bags I had been using, and put them here:

http://www.markcassino.com/b2evolution/index.php/photo-bag-comparison?blog=9

Comparing the Nova Sport to the big Tamrac 612 - you can see in the
photos that the Nova Sport is a little taller. What you can't see is
that the Tamrac has pouches under the top cover of the bag, so the
vertical space within the bag is actually a good bit less. As a result -
it is impractical to stash camera mounted on a lens into the bag,
because the camera body intrudes on the lens compartments next to it, no
room for it to rest on top of them. The Nova Sport has 8 compartments vs
the 12 in the Tamrac, but as shown the Nova Sport has two camera bodies
resting above the lenses within it. Those two bodies would each need a
compartment in the Tamrac bag - so the actual difference in capacity is
only two lens compartments.

But - the Tamrac offers a ton of ancillary space to hold whatever you
want. I found that all my filters, spare batteries, flash cables,
brackets, etc migrated to the bag. It's the ultimate mothership but can
get pretty heavy when loaded up.

Comparing the Novasport to the Mini Trekker - the Nova sport can hold
many more lenses, particularly larger lenses. The two bags are similar
in size but I have three more lenses in the Nova Sport, two of which are
pretty large (A*200 macro and 400mm f5.6). But again - the Mini Trekker
had more general storage room. NOt as much as the 612 but still more
than what the Nova Sport has.

Nonetheless, I'm pretty impressed with how efficiently the Nova Sport
stores stuff, and for me it hits a sweet spot in terms of holding a lot
and still being compact.

It's a Spitfire Super Aquamarine. Hard to see from this angle as I was

I really do have to get a book and study up on these aircraft. :-)
I connect to them on a visual and emotional level, and often look back at the

In 2005, I traveled in the UK and had occasion to visit the Tangmere Military

2016-01-08 Thread Godfrey DiGiorgi
You are most likely much more correct than I am, Alan!

I really do have to get a book and study up on these aircraft. :-)
I connect to them on a visual and emotional level, and often look back at the
photos wondering more about the specific technical information.

In 2005, I traveled in the UK and had occasion to visit the Tangmere Military
Aviation Museum near the south coast. I was shooting with the Pentax *ist DS at
that time and found this experimental, prototype Spitfire in the museum there:

They sure were lovely planes!

Horses for courses.

When I do field photography I really need a backpack type camera bag so I
can walk unencumbered with hands free to carry a tripod and navigate on
crude paths, if any.

When I was doing forensic photography, and the traveling that entailed, I
used a hard sided Halliburton case that travelled well.

I don't get bags. I have one of modest size that will hold a camera, two
lenses, a flash and a laptop. But all my "motherships" are hard,
indestructible Pelican cases.

Probably overkill but I snapped a couple comparison shots between the

Comparing the Nova Sport to the big Tamrac 612 - you can see in the
photos that the Nova Sport is a little taller. What you can't see is that
the Tamrac has pouches under the top cover of the bag, so the vertical
space within the bag is actually a good bit less. As a result - it is
impractical to stash camera mounted on a lens into the bag, because the
camera body intrudes on the lens compartments next to it, no room for it
to rest on top of them. The Nova Sport has 8 compartments vs the 12 in
the Tamrac, but as shown the Nova Sport has two camera bodies resting
above the lenses within it.

The two bags are similar in
size but I have three more lenses in the Nova Sport, two of which are
pretty large (A*200 macro and 400mm f5.6). But again - the Mini Trekker
had more general storage room. NOt as much as the 612 but still more than
what the Nova Sport has.

Nonetheless, I'm pretty impressed with how efficiently the Nova Sport
stores stuff, and for me it hits a sweet spot in terms of holding a lot
and still being compact.

I use the "mothership" strategy - take with my anything that I could
need and when I get to my destination deploy the gear that I want to
use. I keep an empty medium shoulder bag in the car that can at most
accommodate one larger and a couple of small ones, and it is what I
take in the field. That gives me the flexibility to respond to the

My copy of this bag arrived today and this afternoon I transferred
the contents of the Lowepro Mini Trekker Classic to the new bag...
and then added a few lenses.

So at this point I have the bag loaded up with the following:

K-3 with attached DA 17-70 f4
Mz-S with attached FA 28-105 f4.5-5.6
IR converted Coolpix 6000
FA 20-35 f4
F 28 f2.8

DFA 100 f2.8 macro
A* 200 f4 macro
Sigma EX 70-200 f2.8
Tokina ATX 400 f5.6
AF360FGZ flash

It's a well designed bag. Oddly, it subjectively appears (to me at
least) to be smaller than the Mini Trekker when it was fully loaded,
but the Nova Sport is holding 3 additional lenses (the A*200 macro,
the 400mm f5.6, and the Da 18-55). I realized that I have almost as

on the number of filters I packed and also added an external film bag
where I was able to pack film in the general purpose compartment of
the Mini Trekker. I still have to figure out how to fit in some of my
macro brackets and a few other items.

But still - I'm figuring that the K-1 and attached zoom should fit
where the Mz-S is now so I can see this being my main bag for a while.

I've had a fair bit of e-mail in about the new D500 & D5, including my
pre-order sales communication from the shop I usually deal with.

I'm aware that that there has been a lot of calling for a replacement for
the D300s, and had I a large number of DX Nikon lenses, I expect I'd have
been one of those shouting.

If I'd been looking for a new DX DSLR without a collection of lenses to any
brand, for what I take pictures of, I'd have still gone with the K3/K3 II. I
like the larger sensor size, and as I don't generally take photos of moving
wildlife, motor racing etc, my camera is normally set with 1 AF point. This
seeming race for a zillion AF points and shooting vast rates per second
isn't what I need. Others might.

The only thing I don't like about the D5 is the price. I'm still not sure
I'd prefer a mint D3X though if I was in the market for this sort of camera,
and I still wish I'd bought a D700 when it was launched. With FX format, I'd
always need to buy a new set of glass, and the wait for Pentax/Ricoh to do
the deed and launch an FX body has none of the relevance it did for me
waiting for the *ist D with loads of glass at the time to use them
immediately.

The most important thing that I need to upgrade is my computer. Large
picture file sizes need processing with a much more powerful computer. This
for me this year, is a higher priority to whatever is launched by camera
manufacturers. No use having 40-50 MP pictures if you can't process them!

I'm very sorry to hear of your loss Boris.

I never know what to say, despite several occasions of terminal care to
