I've had no end of these darn e-mails. I've spoken to a couple of people
who've (supposedly) sent them, and they have no idea how regularly or how
many of these messages are sent. The one thing I did ask was how they
benefitted from membership, and no one has told me anything positive; it's
usually being sent other membership requests!

Re: OT: Please Do Me a Favor

2016-01-20 Thread Igor PDML-StR

When LinkedIn (as well as Facebook and a few other social and
professional-flavor social networks) is asking you to give access to your
e-mail account (Gmail, Yahoo, ...), -- looks at all addresses you have
there (people to whom you sent e-mail messages, and possibly those from
whom you received messages, and those in your address book), and sends
invitations without your knowledge (to "People You May Know").

The solution is simple: NEVER give access to your email to ANY program or
website. You don't let the door-to-door sales people into your house to
look in you snail mail and your address book. Why would you trust
LinkedIns, Facebooks, etc.?! Some people are just too naive, and that why
social engineering works. That's how you get hacked or your identity
stolen: by believing everything that's written "on the [restroom] wall"

This morning I also received an "invitation" from LinkedIn on behalf of a
certain PDML member. That's an indication that he opened his e-mail to
LinkedIn. That had happened to a few other PDML members in the past (with
LinkedIn and FB).

John, you can actually use the link at the bottom of that "invitation"
message to stop future messages from LinkedIn or FB. That a very rear case
when I would consider unsubscribing from the message(s) I didn't subscribe
to. But I agree, it is annoying.

Linkedin is spam crazy. I joined it in 2006 when I started my business,

Haven't had one enquiry ever. But rather than close the account I left a

Re: OT FYI: New55 - a new instant 4x5 film product

2016-01-20 Thread P.J. Alling
I read that earlier. From what I could gather it's currently an artisan
product. Each film pack is almost hand crafted. At $85.00 for 5
exposures it would have to be. I remember using the original Poloroid
type 55 film, it cost about twice for a quick print or negative what it
would have for a Tri-X image of the same format would have, (but you
couldn't have both). It was worth it for a quick exposure test, and
sometimes the negative could be used, but not often if it was exposed
for a print, so if the lighting and exposure were correct, we'd do a
second exposure using Ektachrome or B&W Film.

I had to price out the cost of sheet film and paper to make an exposure
and contact print in 4x5 for comparison but a 25 sheet box of Ilford HP5
costs $32.00 at B&H, I couldn't find any reversal paper in 4x5 but a 25
sheet box of Ilford Multigrade 8x10 can be had for $19.99. Leaving
aside the costs for chemicals per print, the Cost per print from New55
is $17.00 the cost per print assuming you cut your own 4x5 paper for
contacts is $1.28, (film), $.20, (paper), for the sake of argument,
assume it's a $1.00 in chemistry to process each print, which gives a
total cost of $2.50 for materials for each contact print. We used to
shoot type 55 to save on the cost of materials but at this exchange rate
you might as well bracket exposures on 4x5, (the concept alone blows my
mind), and hire an intern at minimum wage to do the darkroom work.
You'd still come out a head.

Thank you David!

It's a pity that it cannot be used with the images "in place", i.e.
without exporting them. I am not uploading via the Web module, but I am
creating (exporting to the hdd) web galleries in LR.

It still can be useful when I need some standalone images with customized
position of the watermark, but not for creating web-galleries.

I (finally!) finished watching this video that shows how to use this
plugin in LR (starting from about 9 minutes mark):
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LIdq_YX9PyQ
(Warning: the video is painfully slow.) And that process is rather
painful: trial and error approach. You can actually do some similar things
(albeit with only two elements) in the Print module with an ability to
preview, and export the image that way (print to JPG).

I am interested in a more WYSIWYG tool (within LR realm).

Re: Question: Interactively setting watermark position in LR?

2016-01-20 Thread David Parsons
I used to use LR/Mogrify 2 to create borders when exporting. It has a
ton of options and should work for what you need. It's an export
plugin, so it won't trigger when uploading through the Web module.
You'd need to export normally, then reimport the files with the
watermarks to upload via the Web module.

Haven't seen this mentioned here. There's a new 4x5 film product out
based on ideas and chemistry from both Polaroid and Kodak before they
started to pack it in.

Possibly of interest to film fans here? Though I don't suppose that
Pentax ever produced any 4x5 gear.

John,

Yes, thank you. I've been using the brush technique in PS for the past 10
years. I don't think there is any similar way in LR, at least not in v.5.x
and earlier. (I am not sure about 6.x.)

That's why I am hoping there might be a plugin with that functionality.

PS. I just found LR/Mogrify 2 plugin... Looking at what it is capable of.
If anybody has used it with LR, - your impression is appreciated.

PESO -- Boz (further adventures with the Sigma Zoom 70-210mm f4.0~5.6),

2016-01-20 Thread P.J. Alling
Boz is a good-natured gentleman of my acquaintance. I actually think I
captured that aspect of his personality in this photo.

https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/1604247/PESO/PESO%20--%20Boz.html

Equipment: Pentax K-5II w/Sigma Zoom 70-210mm f4.0~5.6 UC-II.

In continuance of my mini review of the 70-210mm, I think my original
impression that it's not quite as good as the Pentax F 70-210mm is born
out. It is in fact the first lens I've had that doesn't seem to have
the ability to out resolve the sensor I've paired it with. That being
said, it's still not bad. At full resolution, (wide open), I can't pick
out individual eye lashes and the knit in his cap is a bit soft even
after a judicious amount of sharpening. At reasonable levels of
enlargement the the overall image seems to be quite nice. I wouldn't
hesitate to make an 8x10 or even 11x14 print from this file. I even
expected a bit more flare but I didn't notice an untoward amount of that.

I still haven't found a lot of documentation on the lens but using e-bay
as a benchmark, one should be able to acquire this lens for under $40.00
quite a few were going begging for much less, though in other than K
mount. It's not a lens to turn one's nose up at, at those prices.

The sad part is based on it's performance so far, it's too good to sell
for the market rate, and would stay home if I could find another decent
condition F 70-210mm.

As usual comments are welcome but may be totally ignored.

Re: PESO and a question

2016-01-20 Thread Jack Davis
Hi, Larry!
You're shooting white on white in the
case of the near surf and at a substantial distance at the crashing
far surf.
Not enough structure in the near
surf and that can only be enhanced
by more definition. Difficult to gain
when shooting such a large area.
The far crashing wave would need
a longer lens and a fairly fast shutter
to catch the surf spray at or near it's
peak with good definition.
I don't expect any revelations to derive from this, just dealing with
the obvious. My speciality!

Re: PESO and a question

2016-01-20 Thread Alan C
Larry, the detail in the scenes looks pretty good to me. A wonderful set for
someone who hasn't seen the sea for some years! I suppose you're actually
referring to the micro detail? Paul S will probably have the definitive
solution you seek. I'm guessing that a smaller aperture & higher shutter
speed would do it but, as you suggest, a higher ISO will be needed. TAV mode
may be an easy solution?

Does that make it queso?

Sunday afternoon, my friend Nicole and I spent some time playing with
cameras down at Garrapata state park (just south of point lobos). With
the weather we've been having the surf was active to the point of being
scenic. I got a few decent shots, this may be the best:
https://www.flickr.com/photos/ellarsee/23868256674/in/album-72157663572666792/

When I got home and started trying to process the photos I realized that &
higher shutter speed

while I might have everything exposed reasonably, processing them so
that you can actually see the details is quite a challenge.

Has anyone developed any techniques or tricks for photographing and
processing active surf, particularly sea foam with a cloudy sky in the
background?

I suspect that I may have been a bit too conservative in terms of ISO,
that a bit more shutter speed might have better preserved some of the
details.

Have you considered opening your own camera store? It sounds like you'd
have a national monopoly on Pentax gear.

:-)

So, it is probably beginning of the end and my next camera will be of
another brand, service of which is local to me and known to be good.

It was a national secret. You know how touchy the French are about appearances.
 And feely about everything else.

You realise that Karin will now go to prison. You've taken the picture

She'll never forgive you...

Lisa and I returned to the Dovetail on Monday and found it nearly
