Yeah, I've gotten far enough along that I know when in the music, or the
technique, something might happen, unfortunately, I haven't developed my
precognition skills enough to know whether or not it will happen.

PESO: Just like home

Somehow, I sent this out previously without a subject line.

I was 1,950 miles from home, visiting the ancient Taos Pueblo, one of the
oldest continuously inhabited communities in the US. To my great surprise,
among the hand full of dogs hanging out there, I spotted an Alaskan
Malamute. Of course, he struck a typical Malamute pose, one I get to see
every day at home:

It's kind of moot, because as long as I'm using high end cards, there's

K-1 autofocus

2016-10-30 Thread Larry Colen
Sometime recently, I think it was Paul that mentioned using the AF-C
mode on his K-1 and having good luck with it. We've just had several
events at the dojo, and I had good luck using AF-C in select 9 mode.

I forgot to change the camera back, and tried using that when
photographing dancers in low light. I was not nearly so successful. I
suspect that in low light, sharp edges in the background are far more
tempting to the camera than they are in good light.

I'm going to continue experimenting on when to use sel 1vs9 and AF-S vs
AF-C (note, I have the AF button configured to lock out autofocus).

I encourage others to also experiment and please tell me what you discover.

Re: PUG Themes for 2017

Why don't we simply have a special Rogue's Gallery, with portraits or self

PESO: Iconic

2016-10-30 Thread Daniel J. Matyola
I misread the theme for the November PUG. I thought it was "iconic," and
intended to submit this image. When I went to submit, however, I noticed
that the theme actually was "iconic places," so I had to select another
image for the PUG.

So, I decided to make this an "iconic" PESO:

2 X PESO: The two more serious horse photos.

2016-10-30 Thread Malcolm Smith
I waited some time for the light to be right for this, much to the disgust
of my wife who was walking with me that morning. I could have cropped
out/cloned out the overgrown bush in the left lower part of the photo, but I
quite like it as is:

Again, I liked the light in this image, as two of them started eating the

Re: Fast Normal Zoom. (for APS-C)

2016-10-30 Thread P.J. Alling
It's only a stop slower than the other 16/17mm-50/55mm lenses, and the
same speed as the Pentax 17-70mm. Everything I've heard about it is
good, but I ruled it out because I've been looking for something that
fills in the gap between the short zoom and one of the 70-210mm lenses I
tend to favor.

needs. A more identical backup body is what I'm more likely to get than
an actual full frame camera, maybe a K-7 another K-5[II(s)], or K3
thought the latter would have some of the same problems as using the
K20D as backup, though the K5II hasn't failed me yet.

So I'm looking at APS-C lenses.

I've kind of narrowed it down to five lenses, at this point, based on
reviews.

Pentax FA* 16-55 f2.8 available new.

Somewhat to my surprise, my DA*16-50/2.8 became my daily driver lens once I
got my K-5, which had enough sensor sensitivity that I could get by with a
slow lens. It's reasonably sharp, reasonably fast, waterproof and a handy
range.

However, if I didn't have the K-1, I'd be looking at a Sigma 18-35/1.8. The
downsides are a bit less range, and it is not weather sealed.

I thought that was her reaction to nude self portraits, or maybe nude

Na, if this was Disney, there'd be at least a cat, riding on one of the
horses, a dog, a fox, at one or more dear, and a bunch of smaller birds
flying around.

I you want to see this the right way, think of it as a herd of gigantic
mice, and a bunch of miniaturized feathered dinosaurs sharing a walk in
a field. That's what I did.

It doesn't look like a Full Frame camera is in my budget for quite some

more than sufficient for most of what I do, in fact is better than most

Somewhat to my surprise, my DA*16-50/2.8 became my daily driver lens
once I got my K-5, which had enough sensor sensitivity that I could get
by with a slow lens. It's reasonably sharp, reasonably fast, waterproof
and a handy range.

However, if I didn't have the K-1, I'd be looking at a Sigma 18-35/1.8.
The downsides are a bit less range, and it is not weather sealed.

So I've been getting along using a combination of a Manual focus
Varafocal, (Vivitar 35-85mm f2.8), and a FA 20-35mm which satisfies
most of my needs, but they can be damnably inconvenient, the varafocal
makes me think that sometimes I need extra fingers and more inertial
processing for my brain to keep track of stop down metering,
re-framing and refocusing, which leads to a lot more missed shots than
I'm happy with. Swapping to the 20-35 and back, is sometimes
necessary at very inconvenient times which also leads to missed shots.

Pentax FA* 16-55 f2.8 available new.

Sigma 17-50 f2.8, comes in couple versions, latest version still
available new.

Tamron 17-50 f2.8 also comes in a couple of versions latest version
still available new.

Pentax FA 17-70, seems to be discontinued, but still available new.

Sigma 17-70, three versions, latest one still available new.

All of them have pluses and minuses, the Pentax FA* is the most
expensive, the first version of the Tamron is least expensive, of
course it's only really available used. I like the idea of the 17-70
as it would cut down on the necessity of changing lenses when things
are moving fast.

I know there are people on the list who've used later Sigma 17-70, and
the two Pentax lenses, but what about the Sigma 17-50 and Tamron 17-50
has anybody got any experience with them? Optically good? Mechanically
crap? Vice Versa?

It comes down to the fact that I don't trust most reviewers. I'll pick
up something that's gotten bad reviews play with it a while and think,
this isn't nearly as bad as I expected, hell this even seems to be
pretty good, and things that have gotten good reviews and think, what
the f*#k was that guy talking about this is pretty horrible. You guys
have real world experience, what is it.
