The hop fields looked rather different from those that Philip shows; they started out the same, but about five feet up the hops split four ways, going out to four different points about another five feet up. Harvesting was done using a tractor driving between the hop poles with a man supported in a tower behind the tractor driver's seat; the second man reached out and cut the hops 10' up with a sharp blade on the end of a pole. Originally the hops were just transported to a nearby field for hand picking (by itinerant seasonal workers, mostly from the east end of London, but including a few Romany groups) somewhat later one of the barns was converted to house an automated hop picking machine. Our next-door neighbour was the hop foreman; when the farm got out of hop production he was hired by Whitbread to manage their hop gardens - the largest in Europe at the time. -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.

PDML Photo Annual update
Sorry I've been silent for a while but you know how life intervenes on things... We've got all the photos saved and organized and we've almost finished making the selections. I'm in the middle of Spring Break but, as you may have heard, also in the middle of a major storm hitting the east coast. It's turned out to be not quite as bad as feared but I still spent most of the day shoveling wet, heavy snow out of the driveway. I've got the theme for this year's book settled and most (but not all) of the typography sorted. In the next couple of days I'll try to get through to Doug Brewer for a final consult on photo selection. In the meantime I'll be working my way through the graphic design of the main section header pages and assorted other oddities. (It's gonna be really cool. Trust me.) In short, things are proceeding as usual: I've started out in a deep fit of depression, not knowing how this thing will ever come together, and proceeded on to a sudden fit of inspiration leading into the oppressive weight of the onerous workload ahead and the panic of not knowing if Doug will deliver his Foreword on time, to be followed eventually by the exhilaration of the release of the final publication. That's the plan, anyway. -- Mark Roberts - Photography & Multimedia www.robertstech.com -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.

Rick about that, they are tall. I was on the side of a hill to get the overall look. There is tractors and harvesting machinery in the middle but they are hard to see the bines are that tall. For sale to a darkroom enthisuast
I know this is normally a Friday thing, but my weeks are so screwed around right now that it may as well be Friday. Anyway, I found, while digging through my crates of junk that I am trying to winnow out, a piece of equipment that would be of interest to anyone still running a darkroom. The article is a Zone VI Compensating enlarger timer, complete with photocell. This is pretty much the cat's ass of darkroom timers, especially if you are using a coldlight (more on that in a moment) The photocell will, when mounted into the lightbox, adjust the time to compensate for variations in light intensity. It also has a drydown compensation of up to 15% to take into account the fact that photographs look brighter in the fixer tray than they will when dry. This isn't my timer, but it looks the same: https://i.ytimg.com/vi/QX2DdDBYJF0/maxresdefault.jpg The more in a moment part: I also found an Aristo cold light head with an adapter ring to fit the Beseler 4x5. The head is prepped to take the photocell. IIRC, it needed about a 40 yellow filter to bring the light to a grade 2 when using Ilford multigrade paper. I no longer have that filter, but one shouldn't be too difficult to obtain. The timers seem to go for about US$150.00 on eBay. I will let the timer and head go for Can$150.00, buyer pays shipping. thanks bill -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.
