Mike Wilson and family were magnificent in providing support at the start and

Not the best of pictures, but the point is to ask if anyone have an explanation of what I saw.
Well, I think I know what this is; it's what's known as "firfisle" around here, i.e. a
small lizard. The thing is (the sad part), I don't think he was sitting so still because he was
pining for the fjords, but rather had passed on, ceased to be, expired and gone to meet his maker,
run down the curtain and joined the bleedin' choir invisible, and so on. Perhaps nothing
extraordinary, either, but I actually saw 15-20 of these in a similar state, all on a pawed path.
This made me wonder what was going on. I mean, perhaps these poor creatures just didn't make it
through the winter, but I think it's a bit strange to find several of them "in the open"
like this.

Any theories?

It could be the lens or it could be a phenomenon I and others have
noticed, and that has been commented on in other places, that sometimes
a digital image will have no zone of absolute sharpness, you did
everything right but there isn't anything in the photo that is actually
in sharp focus. Shutter speed is high enough lens is stopped down if
not it's optimum at least not to the point where diffraction begins to
really effect the image, but still noting is sharp.

I don't know of any theory that explains this, but it's been noted. I
probably saved a bookmark to the discussion, but that was a few years
ago, and I've since upgraded everything twice so a lot of things that
didn't seem to be important got lost.

I realized that the tree flowers are not sharp.
Actually, I am having hard time finding where the focus is. Either it is
back-focused, or you have a motion blur... (or something is out of whack with
the lens).
There is also a possibility that it is overcompressed with JPEG processing.

Re: August Solar Eclipse

2017-04-19 Thread John Sessoms

Update on my preparations (if anyone is interested).

Stopped by my local Pentax dealer here in Raleigh.

I got a Manfrotto 700RC2 fluid head that will take my existing mounting
plates for my 3021 legs.

He ordered an Astrozap AZ-1514 Glass full aperture Solar Filter to fit
over the lens hood of my 300mm f/2.8 (124-130mm).

https://www.astrozap.com/scripts/prodView.asp?idproduct=61

I hope to be able to start practicing safely shooting the sun by next
week to see how much of the frame I'll fill & whether or not I'm going
to need to use the 1.4x tele-converter. I want to have enough of the
frame filled to get some detail on the sun, but loose enough to get the
corona & solar prominences un-cropped.

I'd like to have that lens on the K-1 because of the articulated screen,
but I'll switch it to the K-3 if I find out I need the 1.5 crop factor.

Actually, I am having hard time finding where the focus is. Either it is

There is also a possibility that it is overcompressed with JPEG

It could be the lens or it could be a phenomenon I and others have
noticed, and that has been commented on in other places, that sometimes
a digital image will have no zone of absolute sharpness, you did
everything right but there isn't anything in the photo that is actually
in sharp focus. Shutter speed is high enough lens is stopped down if
not it's optimum at least not to the point where diffraction begins to
really effect the image, but still noting is sharp.

I don't know of any theory that explains this, but it's been noted. I
probably saved a bookmark to the discussion, but that was a few years
