more Robins in Michigan.

Hopefully, more pictures to follow.

I've been back from Oregon for a couple of days. When I wasn't in the
process of moving Mom's stuff into her new smaller place in the assisted
living center in Yachats, I did manage to find some time to play with my
camera.

She does seem to be doing better, both physically and mentally, though
not quite back to her previous levels of spryness.

Here's a bunch of my better shots over the past three trips since the
start of February, several are repeats. It's a bit large, but on the
other hand, there's a whole bunch of intermediate posts I didn't make in
the past two weeks:

alternatively:

http://www.flickriver.com/photos/ellarsee/sets/72157679910495483/

If anyone is interested, the collection of all of my Oregon sets is at:
https://www.flickr.com/photos/ellarsee/collections/72157680004422242/

Or, sometime early next week, I'll post a link to a much smaller set for
my monthly "best of".

more book questions

2017-04-28 Thread David J Brooks
I have been asked to try and find these answers. I have a ticket in
with Blurb but have not heard back in several days so i thought id
just toss them out and see if anyone can offer guidance.

Dave please look into these items
2. Find out if the Blurb logo with phrase as seen on other Blurb
photo book (Otter Lake), which says “The Blurb-provided designs and
graphic elements are copyright Blurb Inc., 2009,” and they added,
“This book was created using the blurb creative publishing service.
The book author retains sole copyright to his or her contributions to
this book.” Is this the only alternative wording? Dave’s photo books
donn’t have this phrase, and perhaps when you change up Blurb
templates, it’s not applicable?

3. Check to see if there are discount codes in Blurb that apply
equally to hard and soft cover in one order.

4. Indicate how Blurb handles colour correction, if available.
Dave’s photo book image requirements were: max size 2000 x 3000, with
no sharpening.

5. Check Blurb’s cost of print proof. How will that affect us?
Concerns that proof for colour calibration on selected Blurb paper may
alter the bulk order’s quality control.

All that text can be changed or removed if you like. The only thing
you can't remove is the Blurb logo.

>3. Check to see if there are discount codes in Blurb that apply

Yes, you can apply the same discount code to everything in your order,
even a mix of different books and book types.

>4. Indicate how Blurb handles colour correction, if available.
>Dave’s photo book image requirements were: max size 2000 x 3000, with

Blub doesn't handle color correction Their workflow is not color
managed. This is why you have to make sure your images are in sRGB
color space (if Blurb were color managed they'd be able to understand
and print any color space).

>5. Check Blurb’s cost of print proof. How will that affect us?
>Concerns that proof for colour calibration on selected Blurb paper may
>alter the bulk order’s quality control.

They don't officially do proof prints. What you have to do is order
one book then make changes and upload it as a new book. Repeat if
necessary (though I've been doing this for so long I never need to
make any changes after one round of corrections).

Re: PESO - 'A Wild Turkey'

2017-04-28 Thread P. J. Alling
They were reintroduced into Connecticut, IIRC about 20 years ago and
they're now more common than a lot of species that never disappeared,
it's kind of weird watching them troop across suburban yards.

They especially seem to love suburban areas with fairly high human
population densities but still a lot of woods.

The two "acre", (builders, which isn't actually as big as a "real"
acre), lot left mostly wooded with a cleared area for a house on it,
makes for good turkey habitat, which also makes for good deer habitat,
(there's also been an explosion in the deer population here in the last
15 years).

There's no generally no hunting, and most natural predators are scarce,
domestic cats and even fairly large dogs are pretty wary of poults when
protected by a big hen.

So wild turkeys like where people live even if they don't actually like
people.

It's mating season and the toms are particularly stupid because of it.
A few years ago a big tom decided to challenge my car when I was driving
to work, I lived on a small side road and his wingspan seemed to cover
most of it's entire width. I could probably have just pushed him out of
the way, but really all he wanted was to get a little action and who
could fault him for that.

Re: OT - Universal battery chargers

2017-04-28 Thread Brian Walters
Hi Anthony

Thanks for that detailed information.

My main concern was that these things actually work - I'm not so
concerned about having a queue of batteries waiting. I'll always have
extra charged batteries available.

Based on your experience, I'll probably order one - maybe not that
brand; there seem to be a number of others.

Thanks again.

Cheers

the big "wow" for me was Dag Thrane's shot that you also used in the

I had not seen it before at all .. lots of the other shots are among my

I'm finally getting a workflow together for making focus stacks with the K1
in pixel shift mode: Make the exposures as raw files, process them in
Silkypix with only basic adjustments to exposure and white balance (about
all that you can do in Silkypix), stack the images in Zerene stacker. Open
the output TIFF's in Photoshop CS6 configured so the tiffs run through Adobe
Camera Raw. ACR allows for fine tuning exposure, shadows, highlights,
saturation, vibrance, and clarity - things that Silkypix can only do crudely
or not at all. And then on to post processing as usual.

Re: PESO -- Little Blue Heron III

2017-04-28 Thread P. J. Alling
Well it was a bit difficult to set a white point. The K-5II has a
tendency to under expose with long manual lenses, and the Kalimar Mirror
Telephoto is by it's very nature fairly low contrast, and so was the
day, what would be described as cloudy bright conditions, but really not
so bright. Punching up the contrast and exposure something had to give
so I chose the water. There is still some detail visible in the water on
my monitor, but not much once the image is reduced from full resolution
to reasonable internet size. I'm just amazed that a lens that probably
had a list price of under $100.00 when new resolves as much detail as it
does.
