thank you Eric. i am pretty agnostic but i was quite fascinated by him
too. among other things, he has been encouraging the villagers around
(the nearest village is about 20km from the ashram) to adopt solar tech.
most teachers in the government schools in the district go on long
leave because of difficulty in travelling to and living in such
terrain. he supports about 40 teachers in the district, paying them a
modest salary from his own funds (he travels out of the ashram in
december/january every year to other places in india seeking funds for
the project). fascinating character.

thanks Stan. this particular State in India, Uttarakhand, has some of
the 'holiest' hindu piligrimage sites and routes but we see that
our treks (our fourth one in the State so far) avoid these routes. the
two routes we did this year are not traditional piligrimage routes
though a religious festival is held once every 12 years by the local
people in the first part of the route.

Chaukhamba is indeed impressive but it was pretty far away from the
trail we had taken this year. but it shouldn't be too difficult to find
a nice trail nearby. anything for a pdml gathering :)

Mini PDML Oxford

2017-05-11 Thread Steve Cottrell
Popped into Oxford this afternoon to meet up with Mark and Lisa as they
followed their current interest of seeking out Inspector Morse
locations. We drove up to the Trout Inn

for some dinner and it really is a lovely setting with the river
outside. Food was really good, just the service left us wonting. But
good time had by all.

Couple of pics from the pub:

Old Hooky went down well followed by a large Glenmorangie. Stefan was on
driving duties (thanks mate) and the weather has warmed up as we get
some hot air from France - and warm rain.

Mark had a copy of the PDML Annual on him (which I haven't bought yet)
so I got to look through it - holy mackerel what a top job that is eh?
Love the theme and headlines. Such a great piece of work - and the
images are brilliant. Looks like I'll have to stump up for a copy now.
Still, business research so that's that :-)

a classic mountain scene.

I appreciated the captions present on many of photos, did some search on the
mountains mentioned. Found a discussion of “traditional pilgrimage routes” in
one place. Is this why the trails seem well developed? Ancient? Still used as
trading routes? Or solely for trekkers?

I will have a few days at altitude in Peru next year. Depending on how that
goes, I may want to see if we can’t arrange a PDML gathering in the region of
Chaukhamba…

Film Lab app (Kickstarter)

2017-05-11 Thread Godfrey DiGiorgi
I thought this might be interesting to film users. It's a Kickstarter campaign
to fund the development of a smartphone app (iOS and Android) that allows you
to quickly capture a negative to a positive image with your smartphone. I
figure it would be good for previsualization and review before you get into
your scanning or darkroom print workflow.

Sorry for the rant.

Back in 1992 our daughter started riding horses and in 1997 our

Actually, the term is squatters. It's often the registrars themselves
that do it, because it doesn't cost them any money.

For historical reasons (the name of my first xenix box was limited to 7
characters), when my email went from a bang path
 ucscc.ucsc.edu!red4est!lrc, to domains red4est.felton.ca.us, I then
registered red4est.com rather than redforest.com. By the time the web
became popular enough, someone else had registered redforest.com and
when it lapsed a squatter had taken it.

Congratulations, Larry.

It's a fine image, and it's always nice to get a little recognition.
