Re: Anybody use On1 for photo processing?
I've been using On1 products for the last several years in concert with LightRoom and PS Elements. The latest version, On1 RAW had some difficulties getting off the starting blocks but they've offered free updates almost monthly as they've fixed bugs or added features they promised but did not appear in the early iteration. I think it could be a replacement for LR but isn't quite there yet. There are still, for me, things LR does better and things On1 does that LR cannot do. On1 runs as stand-alone or as plug-ins for LR and PhotoShop so it leaves you with a bunch of flexibility. If you do any masking, it does it well. The On1 Resize module is built on Genuine Fractals so the resize function is pretty smooth. The few times I've needed their customer service, they have been outstanding. I think they offer a 30 day try before you buy so you aren't out anything by giving it a shot. You may find the workflow a little different than LR, but they have a good selection of tutorials that aren't mindnumbing. -p On 10/3/2017 8:04 PM, Larry Colen wrote: A friend has been pointing me at it. Re: PESO - Wide angle macro
Jostein, That's interesting! My father was a good mushroom "hunter", i.e. he knew when, where and how to find them. But in a way, we were "snobbish": we focused primarily on some "elite" mushrooms that we liked and ate. And we were not taking some of those that other people around us would get. (E.g. we never took Pleurotus (aka oysters), despite (as I learned much later) their popularity. The same applies to Tricholoma.) Our favorites were porcini (we actually bunch several of boletus species in this category, the "White mushrooms"), aspen mushrooms (many of Leccinum * ), young (while they are small and solid) birch bolete aka Leccinum scabrum (boletus scaber), Chanterelles, varieties of Armillaria, Russula delica, and for pickling/marinating, - Lactarius resimus and young/small Suillus. Saffron milk cap were also taken, but they were relatively rare where we went. We would gather young/small (usually, before the hat would open) "champignons" aka Agaricus in early summer (June, early July), when other mushrooms were not available yet. The "lowest" we would go during the "off-/low season", would be rusullas (the more common varieties), woolly milkcap (Lactarius torminosus), and a few other Lactarius. This conversation brought up some pleasant memories. It's been a while since we've gone "hunting" for mushrooms. You can get porcini and some other boletus varieties in Nor.Cal. and New England; probably in some other northern states, but I haven't seen too many mushrooms I'd know and value in the southern states (Texas, So.Cal.).. Beside the Craterellus tubaeformis and the classic golden chanterelle (Cantharellus sibarius), there is the black trumpet (Craterellus cornucopioides) and the other yellowfoot (Craterellus lutescens). There are a few more species too, but I've never seen them. All of the Norwegian species are edible and tasty, and are considered a safe choice even for novices like me. I would never dare to pick champignons, for example, because of their similarity to white amanitas. As you say, the tubaeformis has less aroma than has the golden chanterelle. However, it's quite rich in sugar alcohols, which means that it will partly caramelise in the frying pan if you cook it at the right temperature. Very delicious, despite its inferior aroma. It also helps that it tends to occur in huge quantities when present at all, so you get a quick and easy harvest, and it looks like we have plenty of them on our land this year. :-) Jostein Den 02.10.2017 22:42, skrev Igor PDML-StR: I didn't even know those ones were also called chanterelles. GESO: Waverley Abbey
Waverley Abbey is situated on the River Wey near Farnham, Surrey. Its time span is similar to that of Fountains Abbey but the construction was far inferior. The abbey was just as extensive but mostly only the foundations & crumbling walls remain apart from one building. The property passed into private hands in the 18th century during which the extensive Waverley Abbey House (mostly used as a conference centre) was built. The lands are still use agriculturally with cows & sheep in attendance. I have attached a couple of river scenes for the birders. https://www.flickr.com/photos/wisselstroom/albums/72157686871377570 K5 with the DA 18-55. Re: PDML at Fountains Abbey, Yorkshire
Hi Alan, Sorry I didn't get the chance to meet up and say hi - and thanks for the phone message - I would have called you back but I accidentally deleted your number! During the working day, if I get a call from a number I don't recognise or withheld, I let it go to voicemail as, being a business phone, I get quite a few calls in a day and when I am out filming I literally don't have the time to talk. Apologies for that. Hope your trip went well and maybe next time :-) -- Cheers, Cotty ___/\__UK Shoot / Edit and || (O) |Live Broadcast News -- _ -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.
PDML at Fountains Abbey, Yorkshire
On 17th Sept. Ann & I travelled to Fountains Abbey with our hosts, Keith & Mo Marshall (former residents of Phalaborwa) to meet Mike Wilson, wife Kath & daughter Katie. It was a memorable day with very changeable weather. Mike was very confident of the Pentax WR capabilities but I was no so sure yet. I was trying out my newly acquired K5 (ex Mark Cassino). The group shot shows Ann, me, Mike, Kath & Katie. As you can see, Mike is a large customer who could easily have been a famous front row forward. The river Skell flows right under the Abbey & would have been far better than a well as a water source. Building of the Abbey began in the 11th century & was ultimately sacked by Henry VIII's thugs in the 16th century. It was obviously very well built, the walls still being in excellent condition but stripped of anything of value. Igor, they have been moved to a different genus in the same botanical family, but are definitely related.
