Re: RE - Missing Exif data

2017-10-05 Thread Ken Waller
My guess would be if you see, e.g. which lens was used in the converted
file, the makernote field has been copied.

FWIW after conversion to DNG the Exif data does show lens and camera body by
name.

Kenneth Waller

- Original Message -
From: "Igor PDML-StR"

Subject: RE - Missing Exif data

Ken,
Yes, as I've written in response to your original message, - "Makernote"
field needs to be understood by the software that works with the image.
Typically, good software, even if it doesn't understand that field, should
leave those fields in EXIF intact, just carrying it over when saving a new
or edited file. This way you can still open that file in a different
software that understands that field (for the required camera).

I don't know how Adobe DNG converter behaves in this respect.

My guess would be if you see, e.g. which lens was used in the converted
file, the makernote field has been copied. (But it is possible that
it gets written to yet another field in a clear-text format. -- Did
someone mention that earlier?)

If you are interested to find out what is in the original file, and which
information is carried over, I'd recommend using e.g. ExifTool:

https://www.scantips.com/lights/exif.html , looking at the file
before and after DNG conversion.

Just got a Tim Grey Newsletter in which he explains that while using the
Adobe DNG converter will retain the original pixel data from the original
capture, there are some 'private' metadata from the camera that may be
lost. That data would generally relate to unique features of a specific
camera model which would require software from the camera manufacturer to
fully display.

Seems to answer a question I posted awhile back about possibly missing
Exif data relating to my K3 regarding shutter state (time delay,
bracketing etc).

There is a slot in the package - the "MakerNote" tag.
The DNG spec defines that tag. The camera writes out a MakerNote tag, but the
DNG processor doesn't know anything about the contents of the tag - the only
information it uses is the amount of data included in the tag. But that's more
than enough to be able to copy the tag contents to any new file.

Even those of us who started out with PEF files, and then ran those through the
DNG converter to create DNGs, don't lose the Pentax private data.

Re: Windows tech knowledge guys - regarding Adobe Flash HELP

2017-10-05 Thread Paul Sorenson
So...here's another Spectrum conundrum for you...I have a 3TB NAS that's
supposed to work with DHCP.  But when you set it up to get a dynamic IP
address it works for a while, then drops off-line, requiring a re-boot
to get it back.  The known work-around is to set it up with a static IP
address.  Do that and it's stable. But...here's the kicker...Spectrum
will not let you set up static IP addresses on their modem/router unless
you pay extra to subscribe their their wireless service.

Re: RE - Missing Exif data

2017-10-05 Thread Stanley Halpin
My reading of the Tim Grey comment and other bits and pieces is that we who
start with DNG will forever lose the Pentax unique data because there is no
slot in the DNG package for that.
As I write that, it seems to me that it doesn’t make sense. I would think that
any miscellaneous data would be written to a unused data field, probably never
to be retrieved again. But it seems it should be there somewhere…

Re: QUESTION

2017-10-05 Thread John

I had problems "upgrading" to Win10 *period*; bad enough I will NEVER use it.

Three computers...

Laptop nagged & nagged & nagged & nagged & nagged ... until I finally gave in.
Only then did the Windows 10 upgrade application tell me the computer couldn't be upgraded
because the manufacturer (Toshiba) did not provide compatible video drivers (nVidia).

On this computer it bogged down like shit. Plus it loaded a Metric Ton of
*SHITWARE* and every time I tried to launch the applications I use, Windows 10
would launch one of its built in *SHITWARE* applications instead and try to
force me to switch to it. And I couldn't make that go away. Even though I
declined to use their application, the next time I wanted to use my application
I would have to go through the same aggravation all over again.

I spent 96+ hours trying to install Windows10 on my Photoshop computer (Intel
I7-2600k quad core CPU, Samsung 256GB SSD and 32GB RAM) - although most of that
time was spent doing other things while I waited on the installation. When it
finally booted to the desktop on the second installation attempt, I had so much
lag that when I moved the mouse it would be several seconds before the pointer
on the screen moved. Once I finally managed to get a pointer hovering over an
icon and click it, the delay was long enough I could go into the kitchen for
coffee and still make it back before the window opened. I know this sounds like
exaggeration; it's NOT.

Plus many of the windows had already timed out by the time they did open so
they only flashed open for a second before closing again.

I'll use Windoze7 for as long as I can. If I ever do reach the point where I can't
I'll learn Linux or buy a f&^%$~g Mac ... or maybe find myself a high-rise
apartment where I can throw the damn thing off the balcony a'la

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=licwOgzBqo0

I know this probably doesn't help, but I hope you'll have better results.

RE - Missing Exif data

2017-10-05 Thread Igor PDML-StR

Ken,
Yes, as I've written in response to your original message, - "Makernote"
field needs to be understood by the software that works with the image.
Typically, good software, even if it doesn't understand that field,
should leave those fields in EXIF intact, just carrying it over when
saving a new or edited file. This way you can still open that file in a
different software that understands that field (for the required camera).

Igor

I even resurrected my login on photo.net, - but it looks like Paul has
removed the photos already... :-(

I haven't seen any problems on my primary computer or my smaller notebook.
While the primary has 16GB, the notebook only has 4GB. I've got Elements 15
on the primary machine, and that works fine (I updated to 15 because the
earlier version I had had problems with a setup with 4K displays, especially
with only having 4K resolution on one of the two displays). I seem to have
a habit of only updating every four versions - I've had 3, 7, 11 and now 15.

The one thing I did note is that build 15063 seems to have turned back on
the "share updates across machines on the local network" misfeature (either
that or I forgot to turn it off when I had to reinstall Windows after the
machine was repaired). That can put quite a load on the sytem.

Other than that, the first thing I'd suggest would be to use Task Manager
to see what the limiting resource is.

Flash is dead. It's in legacy mode and will disappear completely soon
enough. It generally doesn't run at all on mobile devices, and web
browsers have it disabled by default, a pretty strong hint to avoid
using it.

Yeah, I see it. Not censor dust, common to pick up such spots when shooting

Thanks for mentioning it, however. I should have noticed and eliminated it.

Re: Windows tech knowledge guys - regarding Adobe Flash HELP

It might be a setting in chrome. Flash can be blocked by default,
allowed by default, blocked or allowed per website etc.

clicking this link (when using the chrome web browser) should take you
to chrome's setting for flash.

chrome://settings/content/flash

But pj's link might also solve it for you.

Eric.

Re: QUESTION

2017-10-05 Thread P. J. Alling
Rule number one.  It doesn't matter what OS you're using, a major
upgrade is going to break something that you depend on.  If you're
lucky, a working replacement will be available, if you're really really
lucky, the existing software can be patched, and if you're unlucky the
software will be discontinued and the user base will be so small that no
one will have cared that it doesn't work.

Personally I wont upgrade to Win10 until I absolutely have to. I lost
three tools on the move from XP to Win7 that have no direct replacements
and couldn't be coerced into working properly no matter what I did.

Strangely Pixmantec's Raw Shooter Essentials, still runs on Win7 where
newer software does not.  I really miss using that too and I have it
installed, but even Pentax Digital Camera Utility 4.x has a better UI
these days.

That said, 4gig of ram is pretty low for running photo editing software
with a modern OS.   I'm doing it but I'm also two iterations of the OS
back and still editing using CS2.  Which by the way is very fast on new
hardware and Win7.

However I suspect that some legacy dll that was supplied with the
original Win10 installation was deleted replaced or more maddeningly
installed in a directory that comes before the one you need to use on
the program search path, if Elements still uses the program search path.

Re: PESOs: The Temptation of Eve I and II

2017-10-05 Thread P. J. Alling
Now I have to create an account on Photo.net.  I don't want to create an
account on Photo.net.  I have one already, but I cannot access it
because it's tied to an e-mail I haven't had for years, I can't remember
the user name, password, security word, if they require a security word,
nor did I ever post anything to the damned account while I had it.  What
torques me off more than anything is these prissy sites that protect
your morals when there are places on the internet what will show the
most horrific acts by just jumping to them.

Personally I don't think it's about protecting anyone's sensibilities,
it's just a way to up their user stats.

Have you had problems after upgrading to Win 10 build 15063? (10.0.15063).
