Re: OT: Coffee

The capsules themselves are often made completely from recyclable material, so
that side is of lesser concern - assuming they stay in the cycle. Of greater
concern is the environmental cost of machine production and the oxygen wasted by
the people who promote these devices.

WRT cost of product, I once overheard sopmeone in a supermarket espousing the
chapness of the capsules they had found. Examining the product during an
overwhelming burst of curiosity, I found thy were paying over £11 for 100g of
coffee. Sad, sad people.

Re: December PUG is up!

2017-12-05 Thread Daniel J. Matyola
Not a large gallery, but a very enjoyable one, with many entrancing
portraits of National Parks all over the globe.

Rick Wormer's "Haleakala Crater" touches my soul, as that is just about my
favorite spot on the planet -- next to the beaches of South Maui.
Jack Davis' "Moulton Barn" is perhaps THE classic national park view, and
he managed to take that oft-photographed site and make it feel alive.
Jn van Wijk's "Painted Desert Locals" is perhaps the most dynamic; I love
the way he capture both the perched bird and the airborne in that
well-composed image.
My favorite, however, is Ken Waller's "Caribou." What a magnificent beast,
and what a splendid pose. The background is just right: Out of focus
enough to avoid distracting the eye, yet clear enough to strongly convey
the environment.

PESO it's a little snowy in Santa Cruz

I got a few quick snaps around Corcoran lagoon this weekend:

https://www.flickr.com/photos/ellarsee/23989491177/in/album-72157690549042455/

For those interested in the whole set:
https://www.flickr.com/photos/ellarsee/sets/72157690549042455

The first are of chestnut backed chickadees, they aren't very good
photographically (those little bastards aren't very cooperative
subjects) I posted them so my friend RJ could help ID them. I've got a
few of some duck, I don't know what sort, but judging by it's red eyes,
it might be wintering here from hell. There's some sort of unidentified
pink flower and leaves of what I think might be nasturtiums.

Some of you may enjoy this. Baboons don't like getting their feet wet.
Taken from the Letaba River Bridge from which I have shown many photos.
The same behaviour is often seen right in front of Letaba camp too.

Thanks, Jack

Painted ladies are frustrating photographic subjects. The underside of
the wings are rather dull, while the upper surfaces much more interesting
and colorful. Rxcept in flight, they almost always keep their wings
folded, even while feeding. Even when they do open their wings while on the
ground or a branch, it is only for a brief "twitch," making it almost
impossible to get a good image of the upper wing surface. Swallowtails and
even Monarchs are more cooperative in this regard, although never easy.

OTOH, when you're miles & miles from home, nothing beats the McDonald's
