Re: Tips for photographing Australia/New Zealand?

2017-12-27 Thread Robert Gonzalez
Here in Sydney. We've been busy with the local sights so far. Tonight going to
try and do some stargazing to the north about 1.5 hours from here. Going out to
blue mountains tomorrow and then catch a dinner cruise to finish off the day.
Saturday and Sunday look pretty open if anyone would like to catch up over a
beer or two. We are pretty flexible as long as it's near a train or bus stop. 😊

Thanks, Robert

Gnus (Wildebeest) are uncommon in our part of Kruger. This herd is
certainly the largest we have ever seen around here. (there were a

Gnus (Wildebeest) are uncommon in our part of Kruger. This herd is
certainly the largest we have ever seen around here. (there were a few
more out of frame). In spite of the drought, 5 calves have been born &
have survived possibly a month. There is no green grass in the 50km
stretch between the Phalaborwa gate & Letaba camp. The animals have to
walk for Km to find drinking water & have to be satisfied with remnants of
dry grass.

KEH.com has had used K-1's in stock from time to time since a couple of
weeks after they were first released. It's a great camera in a lot of
ways, especially image quality, but would be disappointing to someone
expecting the AF and metering technology to be comparable to that in
contemporaneous Canon and Nikon 24x36mm sensor cameras. Even more so
now that the latest offerings from those two brands have hit the market.

Most of my lenses are manual focus, so I don't care that much about the
latest and greatest, autofocus and even a crap lens like the Kalimar
Mirror 500mm gives acceptable results on the K-5II if you don't expect
too much from it. I expect it wouldn't be much worse on the K-1, but
it's AF will never improve since it has none. I also expect I'd quite
happy with a K-1 if I could afford one.

Most of those K-1 used cameras were from users who expected a huge
improvement in AF, and were disappointed.

Also the Buffer is kinda small, if you were expecting D810 or 5D Mark IV
performance in frame rates you are also bound bound for disappointment.

That's where a lot of the current used K-1 cameras are coming from.

Roberts Photo in Indianapolis has quite a few used bodies (several S2,
K-5, K-3ii, K-1, etc) in stock. Also, if you care, buy a body, get a
kit lens at 50%...

I have three preferred sources of gear, apart from PDML and misc eBay
vendors. Adorama, B&H, and Roberts. When I was using 645 gear,
virtually all came from Roberts. Plus some of my K lenses. Never a
problem, always top quality.

Happy Holidays!

Thanks for the thoughts!

I'm probably the closest PDMLer to the epicentre - maybe 15 miles away.
But as it was only a magnitude 3.8 quake it's not really anything to
be particularly concerned about. I was concentrating on a videogame*
at the time; when my wife said "Did you feel that?" I didn't know what
she was referring to - it wasn't strong enough to even rattle things.

* getting back into playing the "Legend of Zelda" games - we treated
ourselves to a used Wii U. We're replaying "Twilight Princess",
which was the last Zelda game we had played (on the old Game Cube);
the remastered HD version is a lot better graphically, and I find
the Wii U controller a lot easier to use than the Game Cube ones
(especially for things like targetting; it's a lot easier to tilt
the controller than to make fine adjustments using the joysticks).
Having a second screen for inventory or maps is a nice feature, too.

We've got "Skyward Sword" and "Breath of the Wild" to play as well;

Re: Deals on used Pentax bodies

2017-12-27 Thread P. J. Alling

Re: Is everyone safe in NoCal?

2017-12-27 Thread Godfrey DiGiorgi
Just saw the news about this morning's quake ... The epicenter was about ten
miles east of San Jose downtown, or pretty close to where I live. Richter
3.8-3.9 is a fairly mild event but certainly enough to get your attention.

I'm still in Cork, Ireland, and Felipe is down south in Tijuana right now, so
we're safe from harm. No idea what might have gotten jarred in our place, but
he'll be back in a couple of days. A 3.8-3.9 quake, however, isn't enough to
cause major damage in general so I'm just hoping that nothing significant fell
over (like my bicycle or the motorcycle).

Re: Merry Christmas and a memory card ?

2017-12-27 Thread P. J. Alling
I've never used one in my camera but I  was curious enough to see if I
could put one I had into the adapter to see if it would fit and function
in the K-5II it did both.

I suppose you could use one if you really wanted to.

Personally I already think the physical SD card format is too small.
I've grown to accept them, but I still worry that it's too easy to lose
one when changing them in the field, the Micro SD cards work I'd worry
even more.

Just a question, has anyone used the micro SDHC with adapter as a card

adapter to much to close the door. Asking cause i got two for a
present just wondering if i need to exchange them of a proper sdhc
