Re: HELP! Advice on Lunar Eclipse Photography

The news here called it a "super blue blood moon eclipse" because it'll be a
supermoon as well.

I can't be bothered trying to get photos of it.

Re: HELP! Advice on Lunar Eclipse Photography

2018-01-29 Thread Daniel J. Matyola
Thanks, Larry and John!

I have already though about the bean bag approach, and even picked up some
dried peans to put in a bag. I also though of using the ir remote to fire
to shutter, to avoid shutter shake.

Years ago I framed the full moon between two palm trees, and I might try
that again.

Going up the mountain to the 10,000 foot level would probably get me above
the clouds, but it is a hell of a drive at night.

I will play around and see what develops. :)

You seriously are not going to even be able to get close capturing shots
of the moon itself that folks with serious gear will be able to do. My
suggestion is that you find a place that would have some really nice
night time scenery to put in front of the moon and set up some night
landscape photos with the moon in the background. It should be in
roughly the same place about 40 minutes earlier tonight, so you could go
do some test/practice shots.

If you don't want to invest in a cheap tripod, you could make, or buy a
beanbag, and set up photos using that and the 2 second delay.

Alternatively, you could just not worry about trying to get an awesome
shot of this lunar eclipse, and enjoy the show.

Re: HELP! Advice on Lunar Eclipse Photography

2018-01-29 Thread John

Check out local camera stores. Maybe you can rent a tripod.

How far are you from that volcano that you sometimes post images from
when you're in Hawaii? Can you drive up to the top to get above the weather?

Given your available equipment, I'd go with the FA 1:2.8 100 mm Macro,
and I think the K-5 IIs has a built in intervalometer. Someone else may
know how often you want to set it to trigger the shutter.

Try this B&H tutorial for the info you need to determine your exposure:

https://www.bhphotovideo.com/explora/photography/tips-and-solutions/22-tips-for-photographing-a-lunar-eclipse

Hope this helps. Wish I was out there somewhere to photograph it.

HELP! Advice on Lunar Eclipse Photography

2018-01-29 Thread Daniel J. Matyola
I heard there was going to be a "Blue Moon" on Jan 31, but ignored it,

So, I am here, in the middle of the Pacific, and it suddenly dawns on me

Re: DA 40mm

2018-01-29 Thread Gonz
Thanks Larry, that's just what I was wondering whether I should
get the 43 for better performance or the 40 for smaller profile. I
wondered about how the K-1 would dominate the size issue anyways. Now
I think you have answered my question. I've been using the 31 limited
in this function, but its wider than I wanted and larger as well.
I've also thought about the F50 1.7, which can be had pretty cheap and
is sharp as heck and decently compact.

Gonz wrote:

The short answer is it doesn't seem to be much.

The longer answer is that when I got my K-1 I did a test set just
photographing a white door. I just posted those photos for you to look
for yourself:

https://www.flickr.com/photos/ellarsee/sets/72157692049499664

Here they are after applying profile corrections in lightroom:

https://www.flickr.com/photos/ellarsee/sets/72157689924005162

In more detail, I found that as much as I loved the da40 on my K-100 and
K-x, since it was a great lens and turned the small dslrs into
pocketable cameras at a very usable focal length, the K-1 was so big
that the smaller lens didn't make enough of a difference over my 28-75
f/2.8 zoom that I ever actually went out photographing with that lens.

I have, since, wished that I had bought the used FA43/1.9 when I had a
chance, but it was just enough bigger than the DA40 and not enough
faster to seem worthwhile at the time.

My suggestion is that unless you're getting an awesome deal on the DA40,
get the FA43 instead, because the slight difference in size won't make
much difference on the K-1, and the extra stop of speed will.

Thanks,
Gonz

So, how often do you print photos or what has been the longest time your
printers haven't been used?

I Use to print regularily with both the large format 2000P and Stylus
Photo, but that has fallen off quite a bit lately since I saw how cheap and
quick I could get great quality prints from Bay Photo.

I've gone months without printing and most times I could print without
running a cleaning cycle. If I needed to run a clean cycle generally one
time would be sufficient.

I haven't printed in several months.

And these printers are in the 15 to 21 year old range, always shut off at
the printer on/off button.

I’ve been using Edson printers for 20 years without problems. Had some
minor clogs in the early going, but my current 2880 has never clogged.

By then the printer head will be clogged beyond repair if it isn't
already. Just fllogged off my Epson R2400 after wasting another 50 euros
worth of ink trying to get it to work again. These are money burning
machines which would still be too expensive if they gave them away.

Aha, I didn't say that I don't use the printer ;-)

It is in daily use, an Epson P50. Actually 2 of them as my son uses the
other.

Inks are from

and we use the cheap generic. I will consider another, better printer in
time.

Glad to hear you're recovering nicely Paul. It's been a tough 12 months or
so for you.
Hope it's all over now. Regards, Bob S.

They used to sell durian-flavoured ice cream when we lived in Singapore in the
early 60s. I bought some once when I was a kid, before I knew what it was. I
tried a piece of the fruit itself too once. I can still taste it...

A variety of colors and sizes. All well caught with that deadly DA55-300.

I bought it at a local grocery store called 99 ranch, which is worth a stop by
itself if you're in the bay area.

Guinea Fowl with chicks, about 2 weeks old, in my garden this evening.
Amazing that they have been able to evade the cats & hawks so far. These are
the only chicks I have seen so far this season.

Durian? I didn't think you could take that out of the country. You're not even
allowed to take the confectionery (!) made from it on aeroplanes.
