Re: OT: monitor

2018-07-12 Thread John Sessoms
I'm thinking probably by the end of this year. I expect to buy a combination of
a video card + a 4k Monitor.

Won't be that big a deal if 8k has become affordable by then. The thing is I
want at least a 32 inch monitor good enough to edit photos on that my Color
Munki can calibrate.

I'm not a high powered gamer, so I won't need a high frame rate. I just need a
card that can output at whatever resolution I get with whatever monitor I
finally end up with.

Many thanks to you for the prompt response. I was in the "I wonder if this is
for real" stage, having checked at PDML central to see that unsubbing generated
a confirmatory email, which I had not received, for quite a while. By the time
I was sure I was out (for some reason unkown to me at the time) you had already
resubbed me. If I'd been asleep, I probably wouldn't have even known it had
happened.

Re: Here's the future...

2018-07-12 Thread P. J. Alling
Pundits have been touting the death of the DSLR since they were
invented.  Eventually the point of ever higher resolutions is lost,  I
sold bunch of images made with the K20D and one became an add that
covered the size of a bus.   14 to 18 megapixel cameras have reached
sufficiency for most professional and amateur work, which probably
accounts more for the drop off in DSLR sales than anything else.

As to the nail in the coffin of DSLR makers, there are currently only
three and a half DSLR makers.  Nikon, Canon, Pentax and Sony.  You can
count Pentax or Sony as the half, Pentax because it has such a small
market share, or Sony because it's DSLR is a hybrid which uses it's
mirror simply for AF while it's actual viewfinder is an EVF.   I expect
Sony will exit that market long before any of the other three, and it
won't be higher resolution from software that causes it.

On 7/10/2018 12:17 PM, Darren Addy wrote:

While the race has been on to produce higher and higher resolution
sensors for digital cameras, while reducing the noise, the future is
post-processing images to enhance grain/noise and sharpness. It
appears that this is possible now, but at a very high cost. (It is
still more economical to buy a more capable camera than to buy the
hardware that can DO this. But I'm sure that will change in time.

When costs come down, this will be one of the final nails in the
coffin of many DSLR camera makers.

It also will mean that great images are not going to require larger
sensors. Cameras like the newly announced Nikon superzoom P1000 will
be all a "serious" photographer needs. And currently "unusable" high
ISOs will suddenly become viable with AI post-processing.

Re: OT Computer security

2018-07-12 Thread P. J. Alling
I'm surprised I haven't gotten one, I used the same password on
everything at one time.  Probably my web presence is so small they're
unable to connect my current activities to those from 20 years ago, plus
I don't have a facebook account, pretty much everything bad that happens
on the internet these days  can be somehow traced back to facebook, one
way or another.

Someone did somehow guess my email password for this account a couple of
years ago, but Google notified me of an attempt to log in from a
different device and location, and I changed the password.  I had been
using something very easy to deduce and I'm surprised it took them as
many years as it did.

On the other hand since I use only fop the PDML, I wasn't that worried
either.  Any blackmailer would probably be bored and annoyed with the
traffic.

Back about 30 years ago, I pretty much used the same password on all

particularly after I started logging on to websites rather than unix
boxes, I started implementing various password security plans.

One of the things I'd have was a low security password that I'd use
for websites that I didn't really care if they got pwned. Particularly
if I didn't trust the people who ran the website to not do something
stupid like store passwords in the clear, or something malevolent like
recording email and password and trying to log onto my banking site.

Over the past couple of days I've gotten two slightly different copies
of basically the same email that includes my low security password.
I'm not upset, I'm only surprised that it took so long for someone to
try this scam on me. At this point, I don't even know which obsolete
website it might have come from, because I don't use the low security
password anymore, I've got a different algorithm for creating
passwords rather than just low, medium and high security passwords.

So, just as it is important to have a good backup strategy, one
without a single point of failure, it's also good to have some sort of
password strategy.

For my own entertainment, I replied to the first of the emails, the
one I got yesterday. The reasons that what the scammer is claiming
won't work are hinted at in some of my replies.

It is a password.

Interesting, which one.

Which machine. What hardware? What operating system and version? What
IP address?

In that case you should be able to send me several sample contacts.

Ooh, kinky! I'd like to see it. I might share it on some of the sites
I hang out on.

Interesting, how does that unique pixel work on an smtp text based
mail client.

video recording to all of your contacts including members of your
family, colleagues, and so forth. Having said that, if I do get paid,
I'll destroy the video immidiately. If you want to have evidence,
reply with "Yes!" and I definitely will send your video to your 5
friends. This is the non-negotiable offer, so don't waste my personal
time and yours by replying to this e mail.
