Sadly my Acer Travelmate 5744 Laptop has no PCI Express port so an 
upgrade to USB3 is impossible. I realize I need a new laptop but that's 
an expensive business in SA today.

You don't need to upgrade the whole computer if it's still got decent 
specs, and you've got an available PCIe slot an add in USB 3 card can be 
had pretty cheaply. Of course that only works if you've got a desktop 
machine.  On the other hand if you're doing your downloading and editing 
on a laptop, there's no helping you.
