I don't know, I've never read it. However for a few years before he died I was friends with one of their prominent former-journalists, a great francophile, independent-minded, but quite an establishment figure, who voted Liberal. He had very prominent political friends of all parties in several countries. He listened to what people had to say, respected a well-argued position even when he profoundly disagreed with it, and was never afraid to speak his mind. You could disagree very strongly with him, but always remain on good personal terms. Respect for contrary opinions, and the ability to argue one's case, are what we seem to be so short of these days. > On 25 Nov 2018, at 21:42, Daniel J. Re: OT - heads-up: good deal on a budget IPS monitor
Usually not a lower quality, it's much more insidious than that. It will be exactly the same product except the model number will be a tiny bit different. Thus when they offer to meet their competitors price, they can point to the model number and say, "We don't have honor that, because it's not the same model..." That's not to condemn Walmart exactly, Best Buy is more likely to actually do that, but they both often have their own model numbers for the same item usually with WA or BB appended to the end. In this case since they're both advertising the same model number and have exactly the same price, I doubt that there's any difference between the items at all. Presumably that "special" batch might be of a lower quality. Actually, Best Buy also has the same sale price ($119): https://www.bestbuy.com/site/dell-se2717hr-27-ips-led-fhd-freesync-monitor-piano-black/5996200.p?skuId=5996200 I see that this model is discontinued at B, so, I suspect it might be at the end of its life-cycle, and that's the reason for such a deep sale. BTW, if you are curious, from what I've read SE2717HR comes with HDMI cable, while SE2717H comes with a VGA cable, but the rest is the same. This is a budget, but seemingly reasonable quality IPS monitor with Full-HD resolution (1920x1080). (I haven't use it myself.) Its gamut almost covers SRGB, - you can see a nice review of it on TomsHardware: https://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/dell-se2717h-27-inch-ips-freesync-gaming-monitor,4859-4.html According to that review, - one of the positive things is that you get an excellent out-of-box color accuracy. (This might be important for those who are not using screen calibrators.) It does not have too many options for connectors, only HDMI and VGA, so if your computer uses DisplayPort, you'd need some adapters... This monitor is in the category of gaming ones. I suspect that it's there because it has a relatively fast (for IPS) response time. But it seems rather suitable for general needs as well as photography (if you don't need wider gamut). Re: OT: Is Paris Burning
I picked that particular article about Paris burning for the images -- mostly Getty, I believe. My principal source of information about Europe (and about the rest of the World) is the Economist, for which I have both a paper and a digital subscription. I also watch the BBC international news on cable TV, and PBS news, which used to cover most of the world but has become somewhat narrower of late. No matter what terrible things you hear or read about politics in the US, the reality is even worse. There is no unbiased organ in the media. Trump has established a cult of personality. He was a Clinton Democrat before he saw the opportunity to effect a hostile takeover of the Republican Party. The fact that he is no conservative is established by his trade policies and the soaring budget deficit he has created. 45% of the people believe anything he says, no matter how ridiculous, and 45% deny everything he says, no matter if it is true or not. The other 10% just shake their heads in frustration. The opposition is disorganized and leaderless. The Democratic Party is becoming radicalized and divorced from reality. Bernie Sanders may be lovable, but his policies will never achieve a majority, and the young radicals have an extremely narrow appeal beyond their base The only leader who might be able to make a credible challenge in 2020 is Michael Bloomberg, but there is no way he can gain the Democratic nomination. We "Never Trump" Republicans will mount a primary challenge, behind John Kasich or Jeff Flake or Paul Ryan, but it will be at best a quixotic adventure. I admired the stability of the EU under Angela Merkel, but with her departure and Brexit, it is hard to be optimistic about the future. Putin seem to be the only world leader who is effective and backed by popular support, but he is a madman bent on restoring the "glory" of the old Russia Empire. Ivan IV come back to life. Re: OT: Is Paris Burning
You probably get a very selective and unrepresentative view of what's going on over here, as I'm sure we do of things on your side of the pond. You will certainly get a twisted view if you rely for your information on hate-sheets like the Express and Mail - the BBC is a much more reliable and balanced source, although I have to say it's been dumbing down a lot recently. I often find it difficult to square things I hear from Americans about Europe with what I experience over here, and I know from meeting so many of you that it is not something intrinsic to American-ness, so I think it's probably just a result of your sources of information.
