Re: OT Peso's Holden hotel

2020-03-24 Thread Alan C
At least it is a respectable looking building, well worth restoring. My
GGFather & his younger brother emigrated from Ireland to
Kingwilliamstown, Eastern Cape, South Africa in the late 1800's. The
brother became the proprietor of the Masonic Hotel which still stands
today but it now looks like a sleazy dump with the current owner making
a living from the off-sales. No chance of being declared a National
Monument! This image is from Google Earth:

Something worth mentioning: Don't pay (or take change!) in cash if you
can possibly avoid it. Money passes through a lot of hands during its
lifetime and there's no telling what it might pick up. Credit cards
good, chip credit cards better and contactless even better.

Yes, we all have to work together to beat this plague.

Aside from going to the grocery store for supplies twice, and stopping to get a
take-out lunch today at a nearby restaurant on my walk, and riding my bicycle
on "isolation exercise" rides, I've barely left the condo for eight days. I
haven't seen anyone other than my partner closer than about 6 feet away in that
time, other than to use Apple Pay to touch a machine at the grocery store I
don't touch anything.

There are a bunch of different rules of lock down in different places. And
there's no credible analysis of which of them are working to diminish the
problem and which aren't as yet. That takes more days and more sample analysis
than can have been done so far.

Many will die, have died, in all the places where I see reportage. Some places
are showing slowdown in the advancement of the infections, others are still
accelerating. I haven't seen much reportage from South America or Africa yet.
The body counts could be enormous; I just don't know.

And the blowhard in chief is talking about things as if it were already over
and done. 'We can do more than one thing! We can get back to work and save
everyone too! Enough of this being closed down! We'll come back strong! …' and
so forth. Fecking imbecile.

Keep working at it, follow sensible precautions until the situation is properly
addressed, ignore (and fire) the imbeciles. That's what we can do.

Re: PESO: Windsurfers

2020-03-24 Thread Daniel J. Matyola
Thanks, Alan.

I have never tried windsurfing, but I enjoy watching it.

A couple of decades ago, I tried board surfing. It is quite tricky,
especially for guys like me with poor balance. What surprised me most,
however, is how much work it is. After the thrill of finally catching a
wave, paddling back out is strenuous, especially as the width of the board
pretty much limits the paddling to the lower arms. I stick to outrigger
canoe paddling these days.

That's a fine action shot, Dan. Most people don't realize how good those
top board sailors are. I did a bit of windsurfing when I was much
younger but only in light winds on flat water & found it quite a trial.
My teenage daughters did much better! A board has been sitting in my
garage for years - I was thinking about using it as a stand up paddle
board but haven't yet.

It's probably just a matter of "well, we were planning to paint the
living room anyway and now we find ourselves with a lot of free
time..." It's literally what I'd be doing now if Lisa had ordered the
paint color she wanted in time. (Too late now so I'm off the hook!)

We don't have a lock-down but a ban on groups of more than two people
out on the streets.

Our DIY stores are also still open in order to give people living in the
same household something to do and keep them from going at each others'
throats. Various associations are already warning that domestic violence
will become a bigger problem than ever.

The city of Cologne's two recycling yards are run over by people
clearing out their basements and safe distances can no longer be
maintained there. They're now threatening to close them.

The café opposite is not allowed to serve people at its tables but may
sell its pastries and coffee for take-away. There's a cluster of people
standing in front eating, drinking and smoking although take-away food
and drinks must not be consumed within 40 metres of the point-of-sale.

A hate being a snitch but if this goes on I'll give the authorities a
call. I haven't been outside for almost two weeks and I have no use for
people contributing to an eventual overload of our health systems.

Saskatchewan has declared a state of emergency, as of yesterday we had
66 confirmed cases in the entire province, none of which can be
attributed to community transmission. It's all sick people coming home
from their holidays in virus hot spots so far, though it is inevitable
it will get out into the population eventually. There are too many self
entitled fucktards out there to ensure that will happen.

The home improvement store that I help manage is still open, though a
lot of what are considered non essential businesses have been closed by
government order.

We are selling record amounts of paint. Apparently that has become an
essential product as people who are supposed to be working from home
need something to do. Why the idiots don't just stay home and read a
book is beyond me.
I can understand if a pipe bursts that you need to fix it, but deciding
that you want to change the colour of your living room walls doesn't
strike me as a pressing need. See the above comment about self entitled
fucktards.

I'm still going to work every day, trying to keep the mandated two
meters from people. Most people are being good about it, the few that
aren't I just walk away from. They are the aforementioned self entitled
fucktards that I don't have any use for anyway.

Stay healthy, and stay home if you can.

The improvement in air quality is amazing. The papers say 75 % less air

NZ's going into full lockdown as well in just over a day, to last at least four
weeks. Definitely the right thing to do. We're currently at level 3 of a
four-level alert system. The number of cases here is still relatively low but
has started increasing sharply.
