Re: PESO - Crystal

2020-10-19 Thread lrc
Very cool.

I suspect that you might have some success with polarizing both the source
light and the camera. You also might want to arrange it so that the crystal
face "reflects" a black background rather than the source light.

Very nice, Igor. You took me back! We did something like that with

big but, sadly, not photographed.

This is the most "photogenic" crystal

However, it is actually polycrystalline (you can see crystallites of a

The main crystal is monocrystalline (except maybe some junk at the edge):

This was not a big photography project, the photographs were taken

Vintage Enlarger

2020-10-19 Thread Daniel J. Matyola
In cleaning out my basement, I have a vintage film enlarger that I need to
dispose of. It is made by DeJur, belonged to my father-in-law, and is at
least 60 years old, but still intact.
I would prefer to see it go to someone who would use it, rather than to the
local landfill. Too heavy to be shipped economically. Any ideas on how I
might proceed?

PESO - Crystal

2020-10-19 Thread Igor PDML-StR

Back in May, sitting at home, we did some scientific experiments:
we grew salt crystals, and then I quickly took a few photos that the kiddo
could show to her virtual class.

This is the most "photogenic" crystal
http://42graphy.org/misc/2020-05-18-crystals/_IR04043.html

However, it is actually polycrystalline (you can see crystallites of a
different crystalline orientation), and it was a "byproduct".

The main crystal is monocrystalline (except maybe some junk at the edge):
http://42graphy.org/misc/2020-05-18-crystals/_IR04034.html

This was not a big photography project, the photographs were taken
quickly on the kitchen table (a last-minute thought).

The biggest challenge with photographing crystals was choosing the light
and its direction to highlight the crystal planes.
I would expect that lighting techniques used by Mark C. while
photographing his snowflakes would be useful for this type of subject,
even though these crystals are macroscopic, unlike the snowflakes.

All comments are welcome!

I really like these. The shapes, colors, lighting, and background are all very
pleasing (what is that surface they’re on? Leatherette of some sort?).

My only criticism is that having only the very bottom of the squash in the last
photo in focus doesn’t work for me; having more of it in focus, or at least the
middle, might work better.

The harsh lighting and soft appearance work well with the haunted theme,
methinks. I have a slight preference for the color version.

Agree that 14 is really nice. I also like 15, 23, and 26.

PESO -- Sabbat.

2020-10-19 Thread P. J. Alling
I haven't posted any photos in quite some time, and it's the season
where some people seem to have way too much fun decorating for
Halloween.  So let me present Sabbat.

I think I like the B&W version better but what do I know.

http://webster26.epizy.com/Albums/Sabbat/

Equipment:  Pentax K-3 w/Tamron 17-50mm f2.8.

Note: This is quite a deep crop, yet the image is still pretty good for
a web presentation.  B&W rendering was created with DXO Filmpack 3's
TriX settings.

As usual comments are welcome but may be totally ignored.

Well, the others have said it all already. I've had most of it in mind
for some time but Mr. Procrastination is not being helpful at all. I had
some sort of hide in mind too - perhaps an artificial termite mound?

By the way I wanted to get deeper into the photo side of things and, in the
first draft had even described my Pentax rig, but my Times editor didn’t want
it to sound too expensive.
