Re: OT Superzooms

2021-04-10 Thread Toine
The P950 arrived yesterday evening. It's a very ugly contraption and
feels like a plastic toy of 1 kg. Charged the battery and this morning
the first test shots at the worst conditions possible (grey, drizzle,
dark) which required high iso (800-1600) and slow shutter speeds (1/60
1/125) at 2000mm and handheld. This is what I got:

https://www.repiuk.nl/albums/p950/#&gid=1&pid=006-104-dscn0016
https://www.repiuk.nl/albums/p950/#&gid=1&pid=006-103-dscn0036

RAW format and the only edit I applied was hitting auto Tone and auto
WB in lightroom. The most amazing part is the SR at 2000mm handheld
and no CA or purple fringing at 2000mm

Can somebody pinch me I must be dreaming

It's now pouring down so I'll have to wait until it's dry for some
real birding in the field.

No, not dreaming. That's how good they are now. My wife's older Fuji
only does JPEG yet mostly performs just as well as my K5. IMHO the
Superzooms & Mirrorless are serious challengers to the DSLR's.

BTW, I'm surprised you don't say "veld" which has long been an accepted
English word in SA. Sounds much more romantic than "field"!

Unbelievable to get these results for this long reach without need to crop.
Very little noise.  Most noise is of course introduced with the
brightening of shadows.

You may have put me on a track as I am lacking lenses longer than 300 mm.

All pretty normal when dealing with living organisms. My wife was known as the
Angel of Doom when she worked in a QC lab for a production process that
involved batching living cultures. At least one in five batches had to be
tossed due to contamination.

The end result is somewhat similar, albeit with varying levels of success.
Still better than getting a dose of the disease, though, whichever option you
end up with. The route the vaccines go to achieve that immunity is what varies
considerably.

Apologies are absolutely unnecessary, and my camera is very unlikely to remain

In fact, your recent pix inspired me to dust off my 50-200 and 80-320 zooms.
The latter needs its focus calibrated, but I used the former for today’s PESO.

Nice capture and patterns. I wanted to suggest for a second shot to get
closer for a view on the propellors but most likely this taken from a
height (open window) which would create a safety challenge.

FA35mm video review

2021-04-10 Thread Juan Buhler
I just published my under 4 minute review of the FA35.

This was my main prime lens for years, and when shooting video of it I
realized how bad it looks. That's plastic from the 90s for you! One reason
to love the new metal AF Fuji lenses for example, I imagine they will look
a lot better than this in twenty years.

Anyway it's a great lens even if its skin hasn't aged well.

Thanks, Toine.

Our tree is about 10 years old, so I was able to take this from the ground,
using the 50-200 almost fully zoomed out.

Alas in just two days the seeds have dried and lost a lot of their color. I may
play with some cropping, though.
