It’s a small gallery this time around, 15 shots:

There are likely a bunch of other shots just as good, but not really different

PESO: animal portraits with the K-70

2021-06-30 Thread Henk Terhell
Finally  I made the decision to get a new Pentax APS-C camera to attach
to the 55-300 PLM now fitted on the K-1.
There is so much loss in pixels with a crop lens on the K-1, though I'm
happy with the sharpness of the 55-300 PLM.
The new K-3 III has a fixed screen which is a dealbreaker for me, wheras
the KP is already off the shelves here.
So I got the K-70 which is about one third of the price of the K-3 III
and has all the features that I need with the exception of GPS.

This afternoon I went outside to get some first pictures.
It looks as if some animals were waiting to pose for the new K-70.
Both pics at 300 mm are much cropped as I couldn't get closer:

Re: PESO: Cactus Flower

2021-06-30 Thread John
I know a little bit about prickly pear. The neighbor down at the corner has some
in his garden.

I guess deer would just walk through a "moat" of daffodils to get to the tasty
goodies within.

On 6/29/2021 22:29:15, Daniel J. Matyola wrote:

The deer don't eat daffodils, but they aren't repelled by them either.
Prickly pears, o the other hand, are difficult to cross over, even for
deer. They have large, hard spines that can pierce deeply and small,
hairlike prickles that readily adhere to skin. They are common in drier
areas of Hawaii, especially on Maui and The Big Island, and Hawaiians call
them panini.

Re: PESO -- Find the Heron.

2021-06-30 Thread John

I've got an Egret:

https://www.flickr.com/photos/jb_sessoms/48751351652/

... from my first test outing with the FA600/4.

And this might be a bittern. I dunno ...

https://www.flickr.com/photos/jb_sessoms/48969053993/

I don't really know the bird names that well. I can recognize Blue Herons, Bald
Eagles, American Robins and Redwing Blackbirds when I see them, but the rest of
them, the actual names are kind of hazy.

PS: I finally paid off the credit card I used to buy the FA600/4 (ahead of my
self imposed 3-year deadline) so it's all mine now ... if only I could get out &
use it.

The new, replacement LED tail-light assemblies I ordered for the Jeep should
arrive here today or tomorrow. Once I install them I hope I'll be able to drive
after dark again.

I don't know if I mentioned when I posted the PESO for the "Mustang", but I got
a ticket on the way home for no tail-lights and no brake lights.

I took the Jeep in for scheduled maintenance the following Monday. They replaced
the tail-light lamps while it was in the shop & Monday evening I had working
tail-lights & brake lights (as far as I could tell).

The next day on Tuesday evening I had to go to the store, and one of the
tail-lights was already not working.

This is apparently a known (and notorious) problem with the Jeep Liberty. I
think it's because the lamps will not stay in the holder, which is a friction
fitting and not a bayonet fitting like it should be.

PPS: I couldn't think of a good pun (or even a terrible one) to follow up, so
y'all will just have to carry on without me this time.

Butterfly ID

2021-06-30 Thread Larry Colen
On a hike about a week ago, I got some photos of a couple of butterflies. I
suspect that someone on this list might be able to ID them a bit more precisely
than “butterfly”.

https://www.flickr.com/photos/ellarsee/51280990964/in/album-72157719477229994/

full album:
https://www.flickr.com/photos/ellarsee/albums/72157719477229994

Shot with the K-3 II and the Pentax 18-270. I like the range of the lens, but
I don’t seem to be getting as good quality of images as I did with the tamron
18-250, but that could have more to do with what I’ve tried to photograph with
it and in what light. Although, come to think of it, the photos of Amiot’s
sculptures were with it, and I didn’t have any issues there.

PESO: peekaboo

2021-06-30 Thread Larry Colen
I’m trying to finish up my backlog before the end of this quarter. Most of
what I’ve done in the past couple of weeks are more yardbirds, juncos and
towhees.

I kind of like the way this photo of a junco turned out:
https://www.flickr.com/photos/ellarsee/51280739629/in/album-72157719529884565/

For those interested in the rest:

The neighborhood hawks have been raising an almost continuous ruckus. I
haven’t been able to get any photos of them though.
