I am afraid this is Jostein's part.
The autopug is his baby.
If you are in doubt please send the submission as mail to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with
a sensible Subject.
Otherwise it gets caught in my Spamfilter.

Then I'll check whether it made it or not and submit it myself.
It might have something to do with time outs.
Or you tried to submit a picture which is too big. This won't be accepted
and if it is really big the site times out.
I got one pic with 1 MB once and this definitely kills the page.

Adelheid,

I hope the submission process gets better soon.

This is the 2nd or third month that I have worked to prepare and submit
something only to find nothing in the PUG. It's frustrating.

The AutoPUG submission page errored off as the last response I got after
pressing SUBMIT. Does this mean it went thru and then errored or that it
didn't go thru at all? (most likely) I just couldn't tell and without a
confirmation, I didn't know.

RE: NEW_PUG - questions

2004-04-11 Thread Adelheid v. K.
Hi list,

please forget the idea of payment for each submission. I strongly reject
this notion, because it hinders people to submit. That's against everything
we intend with PUG. "A space where Pentax users can submit their pics to be
seen and enjoyed." That's what it is made for.
I don't mind spending my time to deal with the monthly creation as long it
is possible to play around with the release, when I am on holiday around the
first of a month.
And if we can find a solution with John's generous friend we'll be free of
charge anyway. So forget the notion of payment for the time being.

If there is general agreement on the submitters supporting the PUG, I think
a pay-per-post is a bad idea.
I think an annual or semi-annual "fee" is a good idea.
What is needed? And who will work it out? $20 semi-annually? Or $20/annum?
What?
There are costs involved, in one way or another, subtle or plain, that need
to be met by the users. Rationally, who else should?
What does the ISP, or server or whatever is involved, require of the site,
in order to keep the server and site up and running efficiently.
It isn't free.

All something to think about. Whatever the cost of running and maintaining
the PUG happens to be, it should not be borne by the site maintainer, the
moderator, or the putative head, who actually do all the work to keep it
going.

Just my 2 cents. keith whaley

Will we be able to retrieve the "previous galleries" from backups?

If not, do the pugmeisters (or anyone else) have copies anywhere?

NEW_PUG - questions

2004-04-10 Thread Adelheid v. K.
Hi list,

it seems that the komkon server will not come back. I didn't hear from Igor
for quite a time now and I think we have to think about a new home for the
PUG.

Jostein and I are already in the process of defining a "new PUG".
Before we go any further in this process which includes reserving a domain
and buying webspace I have some questions to the list:

1: Does anybody else want to take over the resposibility for the PUG. It
means: does anyone else wants to be the new PUGmeister?
I am now PUGmeister for over two years. The former PUGmeisters changed after
18 monts so it might be that somebody else desperatly wants to take over.
;-) Volontiers should apply to Jostein and me directly please.

2: The new domain name: I checked "pdml-pug.net" that's still free.
"pug.net" isn't.
If you want another name, please check whether it is still free before you
tell the list.

3: If Jostein and I are going to handle PUG in the future we insist on a
"proper" provider. We don't want to have the hassle with changing the domain
to another provider every other day. So the webspace will not come cheap. We
think about 250 Euro per year. That's the upper end, there might be a
cheaper one saw one today but have to investigate..., but we need a
considerable amout of space that's the expensive part. And we want a
provider with regular backups etc. - a professional setup.

4: Jostein and I discussed a databased setup, where autopug and PUG are hold
together. How this will be accomplished is not very clear yet. I will setup
a prototype and start testing in the near future if I stay PUGmeister. If
somebody else will help with this task, please write Jostein and me offlist.

I think these are enough questions to start the ball rolling.

Cheers
Jostein and Adelheid

RE: OT: Germans and credit cards (was Re: What gear is on your "lust list" ?

2004-03-10 Thread Adelheid v. K.
The German Word for it is: "Bankeinzug" or "Lastschrifteinzugsverfahren"
which is a veeery long word .
The idea behind it is to avoid the costs that credit card companies charge.
If I give somebody my account data and give him or her the written
permission to charge my account, this person has only to pay the bank for
imbursing, which is a reasonable amount compared to the huge margins you
have to pay when you use a credit card. And it works also between people who
don't have a contract with a credit card firm.

To make this system work, you have to have the possibility to refuse the
payment, if somebody got hold of your account data. The time limit is 6
weeks.

UK direct debit works the same way. In order to get people to trust direct
debit, the banks had to give an unconditional guarantee that anybody whose
account is direct-debited can recall the money. I presume that there must
be some sort of time limit, but I've no idea what it is.

The system works extremely well. I pay all my regular bills that way, and
have done for years. Unlike a standing order, it works for variable
amounts. There is no simpler (or cheaper) system.

It's the US that is out of step here!

ONLY - PUG January is on my website

2004-01-24 Thread Adelheid v. K.
Hi folks,

since der komkon server seems to be down for the unforseeable future I
decided to put at least the January PUG on my own website.

This means:

Some links on this page are NOT!!! working.
But you have at least a link to Josteins page and you can look at the
pictures of January.

Since I changed some typos directly on the komkon server the descriptions
and other things are not ok on some pages. But the pics should be there.

I don't have much space on my site, so only the current month is available!
No archives as such.

So now the issue of the URL
It will change each month at present it is:
http://www.kirschten.de/PUG/04jan

I will work out something more convenient if the komkon server stays out for
good.
If you have complaints questions about this site please use the mailing
address:

mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]

The address on the page DOESN'T work!!!

I hope this helps a little.
Please be patient, the server connection is not as good as the one on the
komkon server.

Cheers
Adelheid

RE: PUG vs AutoPug

2004-01-23 Thread Adelheid v. K.
I've tried to reach Igor, but the whole server is down, so no mails to him
are possible either.
I am sure they know that the server is down and are working on it.
I think the hardware crashed. And since they are a nonprofit organisation it
will take time to reestablish the service.
Moving to another site is not so easy, since I don't really want to pay for
it.
And my own website has not enough space or bandwidth.
Furthermore I don't have the same rights on my website as I have on the
komkon server.

Cheers
Adelheid

Not to be disrespectful however I've owned Acrobat through each of it's
versions since it's introduction and it's about the last thing I'd have
considered as a future proof electronic image storage file format.
Incompatibility reigns supreme between Acrobat document and reader versions.

My cards are on JPG and TIFF, PNG seems dead in the water.

RE: Photodisks Failing

2004-01-03 Thread Adelheid v. K.
Other manufacturers of CD-Rs have made the same tests and also guarantee a
lifetime of about 100 years. The bigger problem for longtime storage is the
format the pics are stored on the CD. If it is a propretiary format like a
Photoshop format or even jpeg it might not be readable some decades later.
If you want to be on the save side, either copy a program which can read the
files on the CD or use the tiff format, which is a far as possible approved
to be supported by most of the readers in the future.
I work for a software comany which sells archiving software and we recommend
tiff or pdf as a longtime format.

For my private use I copy a jpg version and a big tiff version on my CD and
add irfanview as the reader program on the CD.

Concerning the lifetime of slides or negatives. I found some slides which
are about 45 years old. They were partly in bad shape but others had
survived nicely. Also I have b&w prints from 1920 (earliest) and they are in
a very good shape.

Just my 2 cents

Kodak have done some pretty rigourous accelerated-aging studies on their own
CDRs and came up with an estimate of 217 years average lifetime. A copy of
the report is online at
http://www.cd-info.com/CDIC/Technology/CD-R/Media/Kodak.html if anyone's
interested. Kodak's (more conservative) official position is that "under
normal storage conditions", Photo CDs should last for "100 years or more."

Obviously the manufacturers of cheaper media won't have data lifetime quite
as high on their list of priorities - the lifetime of unbranded budget CDRs
is probably nothing like that...

2004-01-03 Thread Adelheid v. K.
Hmmm the PUG website doesn't use cookies, it is pure and simple HTML code.
No frames nothing fancy.
So I thnik it has something to do with the setting for handling pictures.
When bandwidth was a bigger issue than today and the makers of websites
where not as sophisticated as today, there have been huge picture files on
the wegsites. This slowed the viewing considerably.
Therefore there are settings in the browser and in firewalls as well to
block pictures.
Something like "show pictures as placeholders" or something.
If you can find theres settings and adjust them it might help.

Just my 2 cents.

Hi Len,

I'm using ZA 4.0.123.012, and it's been wonderful. I'll just hazard a guess
here, but under 'Privacy', try enabling all cookies and turning off ad
control. In the past I've had nothing but trouble with any kind of ad
blocker (often blocking everything but the ads), and cookie blockers tend to
remove the functionality of some websites. Try changing these settings, then
clearing your IE cache and cookies (tools> internet options> general> delete
files + delete cookies). Close & restart IE and it should be fine.

If not, you can try adding PUG to your trusted zones (ZA> Firewall> Zones>
Add> Host/site> Trusted + http://pug.komkon.org/ ).

or, a less preferable third alternative, go to ZA> Firewall> Main> Internet
Zone Security> Medium (mine is default on high, while Trusted Zones is
default medium).

Hope it works! :-)

HTH,
Ryan

PS. About undesirable cookies, I just make it a habit to clear my cache and
cookies just before I close my last browser window. Only disadvantage is
deleteing the cache and cookies and clearing the history makes you lose the
custom icons that some websites give you when you save a bookmark.. But it's
a small tradeoff.. In my own experience, Norton AV is works well hand in
hand with ZA (personally don't like Norton Internet Security/Firewall.. I'm
under the impression it uses more resources than ZA..).

RE: PUG: September open - suggestions for themes (next year)

2003-09-03 Thread Adelheid v. K.
I thought along the same line when I saw these posts.
Since I create the PUG very much automatically now my scripts will need
some adjustments, but I think I can do this.

So wie have 12 themes to work out now
As I said the seasons where a sort of test when they will be noticed.
But I think I'll keep one theme called "Seasons" - I liked the "Cliche"
so this will come instead of the unloved Synchronicity theme.
The "Mystery shot" I like as well. I think I'll call it "Mystery" alone
than the range for interpretation is greater.

For the rest, speak up people It's your PUG.
