Amazon Gold Box Deal of the Day

2009-03-09 Thread Allison Trueman

Hello All,

I got an interesting email today...the K2000 kit was the Amazon Gold
Box Deal of the Day. It is/was (gold box items are at that price until
sold out) $399. I got notified because I have an amazon wish list with
a lot of Pentax gear on it.

As for 70-200/2.8, basicaly the choice is between Sigma (and potential
problems including compatibility ones) but HSM (only!!) and Tamron (no
compatibility problems) but old screw AF. Both seem quite nice lenses.

I have the Tamron, and I really love it. It is very sturdy and good
IQ, but be warned, it is heavy.

I didn't see the information that a specific request was made until
after my post. So for that, I can see the need. From a practical
perspective, I stand by what I said.

Don't worry everyone...I have more lenses than the two that I am
renting. I have my reasons for wanting those two lenses. I am actually
trying out the 50-135 for purchase. I have the Tamron 28-70 2.8, so I
was going to get the 70-200 2.8, but everyone raves about the 50-135.
I figure I need to try it. Keep in mind that my other photography job
is taking pictures at high school hockey games, so the range to 200 is
really nice, but then again so is weather sealing.

Besides the client wanting the fisheye shot, I also really like that
special effect lens, and I would like to own it one day. I like the
different lenses...such as my lensbaby ;o)

I have never rented a lens, so I can't answer your question, but why
would you want a fisheye to shoot a wedding? Perhaps it might be
okay for a few effects photos, like a church exterior or something
on that order. But you definitely don't want to use it as your main
wide. Can you rent a 16-50 or if you already have a medium wide to
normal, maybe a 12-24? I bring my 12-24 when shooting a wedding but
rarely use anything wider than the 16=50

Paul

It is just for the effects photos. I have actually met with a few
couples before who wondered why I didn't have anything in my portfolio
with a fisheye at the back of the church during the ceremony. They do
also have the 12-24 or the Sigma 10-20 available, but my friend/2nd
shooter has that range covered with her D700. Since the couple has a
beautiful location for the ceremony and reception, and because they
are an attractive couple, I really want to use this wedding to expand
my portfolio. The lensbaby is going along too...

Damage Waiver for Lens Rental?

2009-03-05 Thread Allison Trueman

Hello Everyone,

So I am shooting a wedding on March 21, and I am going to need to rent
two lenses: the 10-17 fisheye and the 50-135. I am going to rent from
cameralensrentals.com, but I am not sure on the damage waiver. Has
anyone used them before? And if so, did you get the damage waiver?

Thanks!

Allison

PS - for everyone who gave advice on if I should buy the fishy or the
50 1.4, I got the 50 1.4...and I think it is the best lens I own. It
doesn't ever leave the camera for very long! Thanks!!

You are going to love the 50 1.4 for this event, especially because
you have some flexibility of where you stand during the matches. I
currently cover jv and varsity hockey (my husband is the coach), and I
used to be the yearbook advisor and was responsible for taking a lot
of high school sports. You will not want to use flash for this, even
if you are permitted. That is where the new lens is really going to
help you out...

Take the 28-80, just in case you can't get as close as you would like.
Also, take plenty of media...when you are there you don't want to
worry about running out of room. Finally, just relax and have fun.
Shooting events like senior night are really exciting and a lot of
fun!

A lurker coming out...

Let me preface with I'm an advanced amateur, but an amateur non-the-
less.

I've been asked to take photo's this Friday for a high school
wrestling match. The coach is my brother-in-law. He's having Senior
Night as well as Alumni Night (asking for pictures of both) as well as
some shots of the match's themselves. I'll be on the mat during the
matches.

I've been kicking around what I need for this.

My current equipment...

   Pentax K100D
   Pentax SMC-DA 18-55 3.5-4.6
   Pentax SMC-FA 28-80 3.5-4.6
   Pentax SMC-FA 70-200 4-5.6
   Pentax SMC-FA 100-300 4.5-5.6
Vivitar 285HV Zoom Thyristor with vari-power

I'm expecting that the lighting in the gym will be poor, especially
during the matches. I've asked about using the flash and he's
checking to see if it will be allowed or not (sometimes it is,
sometimes it isn't).

Since the most I'll be is about 30-40 feet from the action, the long
zoom is out.

I think the FA28-80 lens is pretty much the same as the DA18-55 (the
28-80 was a kit lens for my old PZ-20). I could use this with the
flash to get close and well lit shots (if I can remember how to use it
- flash pictures have been the bane of my photo experience). I'm a
little afraid of too much flash and harsh shadows.

The 70-200 could fit the long range shots, but I'm afraid of losing
too many close in shots.

In my quest to get more light, I've purchased today a Pentax Normal
SMCP-FA 50mm f/1.4 Autofocus Lens from B&H and should have it by
Friday. This really was one of the few, if only, prime in my price
range.

My questions...

Did I do right by getting the new lens? (at least in the terms I
need it for, not in overall "yes, it's a great lens").

Has anyone shot this type of event?

   Any suggestions or comments?

Thanks!
Ed

Test and Fisheye

Hello all,

So, the first past of this is a test, because I have send 4 messages

through. I am on a mac using mail, so I don't know if that means I
need to do something special, but this is my last try to get messages
through.

I was wondering what a good price for a used 10-17 fisheye would be. I
am looking at one for $320 (plus $15 shipping), which is much better
than the $389 listed on amazon, but the amazon lens is new. I have
never purchased a used lens before because my older lenses came from
my dad. I also would like some opinion on whether I should buy the
fisheye now or if I should wait and buy a 50 1.4 new instead.
Decisions, decisionsI may have a wedding in March (a friend,
minimal pay but enough to cover one or the other), so that is why I am
looking at new glass.

Re: GESO: Shots from 1st wedding

Jerome,

I just shot my first wedding too, and I had the same experience with
the coordinator...she didn't leave me with any time to take posed
shots of the couple after the ceremony. TO make matters worse, her
mood lighting for dancing created a horrible backlight!

Your shots are great, and after you sort and pick out your favorites,
I am certain the bride and groom will be really pleased with your
work. Congrats!

I agree with you that the flowers get lost in monochrome, but given

b&w works for me too.

Still, after looking again, I like the color better. I just focused on

Re: Flash for K10D

2008-04-28 Thread Allison Trueman
I have the Sigma EF-530 DG ST and I love it! It does more than the
Pentax 360 (like it swivels and rotates) and it costs less than the
Pentax 540. My only complaint is that it is missing the bounce card
that the 360 has built in (it does have a built in diffuser). It also
has a higher guide number than the 360, I believe.

I see you took advantage of the Chihuly show at Phipps. I went too,
but I was with my mom and aunt - two people who would not want me to
take all of those pictures while they were around. Did you get to see
it at night? I heard it was wonderful at night, but I was only there
during the day. In your shot I love the reflections in the water - the
lines from the building make nice subtle leading lines to the glass in
the lower right.

I am recently back to Pittsburgh. I grew up here (I have lived in
Churchill, Murrysville, Squirrel Hill, and Harrison City). I don't
know Sean, but that is because I have only been with the Art Institute
since July and I am not at the school much when high school is in
session. I am sure that I will get a chance to meet him in the summer
when I get to be at the school everyday.

Hello and PESO:Cat in a Bag

2008-04-11 Thread Allison Trueman
Hi Everyone!

I am new to the list, and I wanted to take a moment to introduce myself. My
name is Allison Viron and I live in Pittsburgh, PA. I have been reading the
PDML for about 2 1/2 weeks now, but I didn't want to comment on it until I said
hi.

I started with Pentax in college (I was able to steal all of my Dad's old
lenses) and a few years ago I took the DSLR plunge and got an *istDL.
Photography is a serious hobby for me (or should I say obsession?), but I did
recently shoot my first wedding. My paying job is with the Art Institute of
Pittsburgh; I am an Admissions Recruiter.

At the moment, my favorite subjects are my pets - an orange tabby Manx named
Lucy and a black and tan Coonhound named Otis. I know there is something about
cat photos and the group, but Lucy has actually learned to pose and wait for
the shutter to move, so occasionally I will post a cat photo ;o)

So I am posting a PESO of Lucy today. She likes boxes and bags, and the title
says it all. Let me know what you think.

I am really looking forward to learning from everyone!

Allison
