I have heard that too about the kneading...but mine after kneading will start grooming me (seriously, she tries to lick my hair) and then she bites the hell out of my scalp. And of course, she always decides to do this around 3am. she also brought me a dead chameleon in bed once, it was actually my Christmas present. Bad Cat.

More likely she's trying to figure out where she might find a nipple
that actually gives milk! :-)  I read somewhere that the pawing motion
is called "mewling" and mimics the behaviors kittens use when nursing.
It's supposed to be part of their dichotomous view of us as both
"alpha/mother" and "youngster in need of training".
