Re: Poor FEDEX service

2009-03-05 Thread Amita Guha
This happened to me a couple of weeks ago with a UPS order. UPS left
the package at someone else's house. The person opened up the package
before he realized it wasn't for him, then called UPS to pick it up
and deliver it to me. I never found out where it went originally.
Stinks but it happens.

Very sad to hear about this. I had a little Rollei P&S that I loved

kept an eye on Rollei's digital P&Ss, but they never put out anything
decent. Too bad.

Britain outlaws the photographing of police in action

2009-02-13 Thread Amita Guha
http://www.boingboing.net/2009/02/13/brits-rally-to-save.html

http://www.bjp-online.com/public/showPage.html?page=839141

Britons are planning on rallying at Scotland Yard on Feb 16 to protest
the new law that lets the cops throw you in jail for ten years for
photographing them in action, if your photo is "likely to be useful to
a person committing or preparing an act of terrorism."
http://www.boingboing.net/2009/02/13/brits-rally-to-save.html

The National Union of Journalists, in association with British
Journal of Photography, has called for photographers to make their
voices heard at a rally on 16 February as a new law is introduced that
allows for the arrest - and potential imprisonment - of anyone who
takes pictures of police officers 'likely to be useful to a person
committing or preparing an act of terrorism'...
The NUJ has teamed up with Mark Thomas, a writer, broadcaster, comic
and political activisit, along with Chris Atkins, who is behind the
documentary Taking Liberties, and BJP for a 'photo opportunity'
outside New Scotland Yard on Monday 16 February. 'The plan is simple,
turn up with your camera and exercise your democratic right to take a
photograph in a public place,' says Marc Vallee, an NUJ member who
will be there on the day, and who himself clashed with police over the
right to photograph public events

The tents are for the holiday fair on the south side of the park. The
farmer's market used to be on the north & west sides of the park, but
now it's just on the west side since they're doing construction, I
think for a new restaurant. It's sad because it used to be a great

Actually, the code on Paul's site is pretty light. I've been using
Dreamweaver for years and haven't had too many problems with bloated

it's all Nikon gear except for the crappy waterproof Oly I use for

I just got a new Wacom tablet and I used it and the trial version of
Lightroom 2 (along with PS) to edit this batch. They both made
processing a lot easier and more fun.

I'd actually love to hear opinions on this photo:

I like the composition but I can't decide if it's too backlit to be a
successful shot.

Indeed. Nate bought me my first dSLR, the *istD, because he saw me
deliberately not taking shots in order to conserve film. (I was out of
work at the time.)

However, the flip side is that I now have over 1,700 exposures from a
week in San Francisco to go through. Ugh. :)

I saw the D90 today at Photo Plus. It looks like a great little
camera, and I'm definitely going to get one, probably early next year.

Re: What do you all think of the micro 4/3 system?

2008-10-20 Thread Amita Guha
My husband is looking at the micro 4/3 as the ultimate
carry-everywhere digicam. He has been wanting a digi with full manual
control for quite some time, so he's very keen on these little
cameras. The G1's shutter preview, in particular, sounds very useful.

I also like the idea of two or three reputable "non-third-party"
camera companies putting out lenses for the same mount. It's an
interesting way for them to compete with the big boys.

Nate is right now trying to convince me to get a G1 instead of the D90
I want. :) I imagine we'll be starting a micro 4/3 system within a
year.

I'm looking forward to trying it at Photo Plus next week. The D90 will
be an upgrade from my D50, which I bought mainly for its size. I guess
if I prefer the D90 to the D200, I can always sell the D200 for a
D300, right? :) I don't anticipate using the D90 much; mainly in city
shooting situations where I don't need the sealed body, etc.

I got to play with a friend's new D3. It wasn't nearly as big &
difficult to handle as I thought it would be. It was quite comfortable
in the hands, and it handled like a dream. I'd love to have one -
among other features, I find the ability to alternate between two
cards at once to be quite cool, although I have no need for it. Maybe
I need to start shooting weddings...

Sorry I missed you, John. Nate and I were in San Francisco all last
week and we caught the Angels on both Thursday and Friday. On Thursday
we were down at Fisherman's Wharf, and on Friday we ended up by the
Marina. I was carrying my old Nikon D50, which did surprisingly well
at tracking with my 70-300mm. I'll post some shots as soon as I
process them. I got some nice ones with the Golden Gate in the

Re: Convenient backpack: travel camera set + laptop - Fastpack250

2008-04-23 Thread Amita Guha
I don't feel that there are many bags that work well in an urban
environment, either functionally or aesthetically. I like Crumpler's
shoulder bags for aesthetics, but there's no room in them for extra
stuff like my wallet, a book and other things I need on the subway. So
many bags I've seen seem to be made for car travel. It is hard to find
a bag with security features like interior zippered pockets, etc. I'm
also going to try to use as many recycled materials as possible. I
realize Lowepro is already doing this, but it's good for the
environment.

I like Lowepro's bags a lot (I must have at least six of 'em), and
this new Fastpack series looks awfully close to what I've been looking
for, but I need to look at it in person. Lowepro's bags still usually
look like you're going out hiking in the woods, and the ones that
don't just look very corporate (like ThinkTank's).

Thanks for all your input. It is very helpful. I understand your
distinction between having a bag for transport and having one for
working out of. I've come up against this in airplane travel and I'm
planning to address it in a future bag or series of bags.

I have no idea if I'll actually be able to make money on this - I need
to do a business plan and such - but I'm going to try I've been
thinking about doing this for a few years. I lost my job recently and
this seems like a good time to give it a go.

Re: Convenient backpack: travel camera set + laptop - Fastpack250

2008-04-22 Thread Amita Guha
Thanks for sharing this with us, Igor.

I am working on developing my own line of camera bags. My project is
still in its infancy, but I'm working with a designer on some concepts
I've had in my head for a while. I'd love to hear any other ideas you
guys would like to see implemented in a camera bag.

Re: Sigma AF 10-20mm f4-5.6 EX, Anyone?

2008-04-22 Thread Amita Guha
I had the Sigma on my *istD, and I loved it. Never compared it to the
Pentax, but it's the only one of its kind that goes out to 10mm, so I
never considered anything else. I liked it so much that it was one of
the first lenses I bought when I ,*ahem*, switched to Nikon.

Here are some shots of it on the *istD:

When Nate wants to shoot the cats, I stand behind him and wave my
fingers over his head, sometimes while whistling at them or whatever
to get their attention. It works pretty well at getting them looking
in the direction of the lens. Treats are good as well if you want them
to stay in one place while you shoot. Just give them a couple wherever
your setup is and they will stay there for at least a few moments.
Good luck & have fun!

best configuration of a Mac Pro for photo processing?

2008-01-16 Thread Amita Guha
Now that Macworld is over, I can buy my Mac. I'm going to get a Mac
Pro, and I'm trying to figure out the configuration. I want to be able
to run PhotoShop, Lightroom, and a bunch of other applications without
any performance problems. Chances are slim that I will delve into
video editing or anything like that, although I suppose anything is
possible. I checked on DPreview and some people recommended the
following:

Single quad core motherboard
6 to 8 Gb RAM
3 hard drives - one for apps, one for data & one for a scratch disk for PS

My coworkers think this is overkill and say I should start with a
basic machine and add on as necessary. The basic Mac Pro is now
2 quad core MBS (the single quad core is cheaper) with 2GB RAM and a 350GB HD.

What do you guys think? There seems to be some debate over whether
Photoshop can even make use of multiple processors, so I'm fine with
going with the single quad core MB, but I'm not sure about the rest.

Thanks,

Not sure I can quantify the difference...the images out of the 17-50
just don't seem to "pop" the way the ones from the 28-75 did, for me
at least. Keep in mind that I used them on 2 different bodies: the
28-75 on the *istD and the17-50 on the D200. I'm considering selling
the 17-50 and maybe at some point getting the Nikon 17-55 if I feel
the need. I agree, at 1/3 the cost of the Nikon, the Tam is a great
value, which is why I got it instead, but I just don't like it as
much.

We have a Yamaha that is well within your price range for that doesn't
sound half bad.Ultimately I got a 3/4 Ibanez for less than $500 that
sounds fine for what it is. I imagine the more expensive, full-size

AW. I got it in May for my Iceland trip. It held up great by the way -
I had it in heavy mist from waterfalls and it didn't leak, although it
did leak when I had it in the bottom of a boat for a while.

I carried 4 lenses, one body, a ballhead, a digicam and an image tank
in mine. That filled up the padded section.

I have the Mini-Trekker and I have attached the tripod to it with no
problem. It's kind of a pain if you want to open the bag without using
the tripod because you have to disconnect the top tripod lash whether
you want to or not.

I bought the Naneu Pro Alpha a while back because it mounts the tripod
on the side of the bag. However, half the bag is actually a day pack
while the bottom is for camera gear. I like the design, but it doesn't
hold as much as the Mini-Trekker and it's not waterproof, although it
comes with a rain fly.

way OT: configuring a Mac for photo work

2007-09-24 Thread Amita Guha
My PC laptop is on its last legs, and I'm not too into Vista, so I've
decided to take the plunge and switch systems. (I know, I've never
done that before). I've spent the last week or so researching Macs,
and tonight I finally went to an Apple store, where I decided on a
basic configuration: MacPro w/20" monitor.

My question is, if the most resource-heavy work I'm going to do on
this machine is run Lightroom and Photoshop, do I need a RAID? I
usually store my images on a networked drive, but Nate says the system
will run a lot faster with a RAID. I figured a 250gb drive and 4GB RAM
would be fine to start with. What do you guys think?

Thanks in advance,

it. I also have a CD of Pentax Software S-SW10, which is the Pentax
Photo Browser and Laboratory, and the manual that goes with it. I
think that might have also come with the *istD. I'll mail either or
both to someone for free within the US.

Pentax PH-RBB 52mm Lens Hood. Apparently this is the hood for the D FA
100mm f2.8 Macro Lens, as well as for the D-FA 50-200mm (I could only
find a reference to the 50-200mm on one website, but that's the only
one of the two that I've owned.) Brand-new condition, barely used.
Amazon sells it for $39. US $30 plus $5 shipping.

Pentax S80-80 soft lens pouch. According to B&H, this pouch fits the
55mm f/2.8, 75mm f/2.8, 75mm 2.8 (FA) Lens and the 1.4x Converter for
Pentax 645. $25 plus $1 shipping.

Bogen/Manfrotto 3157N Quick Release Plate. I have 3 of these. $8 plus
$1 shipping each.

Good questions. The dust appears to have been mostly on the outside -
I think I got most of it with a swab. The blue area must be a
reflection of the flash off the edge of the viewfinder glass - I could
see something bluish but there is definitely not a blue spot on the
camera.

Funny you should mention it, I put my remaining 3 manual Pentaxes up
on ebay this week. My K1000 is at $6.50 right now, so I'm almost
there. ;)

I agree with Tom that the lack of real ISO 100 is a disappointment,

What Godfrey said. This is the reason I installed Lightroom when I
returned from Iceland with over 1200 shots. It made the process much
easier than even Bridge could, because there are so many different
ways to view, rank and organize your photos. It's *much* faster than
doing it one photo at time. I still spent days editing the photos, but
it was much more pleasant than it would have been with Bridge alone.
