RE: PESO: Climber

2004-08-31 Thread David Schneider
I will second that!

The nice tight crop focused my attention on exactly, I think, where you
wanted it. And, as a consequence, I paid good attention to the face, and
the expression.

Also, I did notice the depth of field, but after pondering it a bit,
decided that you did great on it.

Well done!

I like the energy of the tight crop. It just sort of squeezes more raw
emotion into the frame, and it makes for a nice comosition as well. At
least to my eye.

Nice Shot!

However, one has to question just what the blond in the pickup truck
just behind the Ferarri found so interesting, especially with such a
wonderful car in front of her! I would have thought that everyone
stared, and kept starting at that car!

One of the criticisms that I heard about the *ist D was that the
pictures were soft. I guess shooting in RAW mode takes that away, as the
colors on the car and the amount of detail are very pleasing to me.

Anyway... nice!

longer lens (was PESO: Journey's End)

2004-08-22 Thread David Schneider
Frank!

A story for another time... I shall be waiting for it!

What, out of curiosity, is your longest telephoto?

I have a 70-200 zoom by some manufacturer I am not sure of (the lens is
totally unlabeled, and I bought it many many years before I understood
that quality matters. Still, it doesn’t do a bad job). But, back to the
point, I have thought about getting a longer one, but am not sure how
long is really useful.

Does the horizon tilt more in longer lenses?

If I want to see naval types, I go hang around the

get as close to the Navy Drydocks as I dare, to watch
burly young men with their sleeves rolled way up,
wielding large tools.

Sometimes I go into the bars and...

Well, that's another story for another time.

I really like this one!

The chair (as noted in a previous) comment looks invited; but it also
may have been that someone just left it, as well. I looked for tendril
of smoke about (for that seemed to be the emotion that was evoked).

At first I did not care for the red brick in the corner, and thought
that it distracted. But I cropped it with my hands (an excellent
cropping tool!) and realized that the chair then seemed to float
in mid air. Which is a long way of saying "kudos" for an excellent
composition!

I have always been interested in ships in general, and the people who
crew them. It is fascinating, to me, to see the large ships ply the

that would be good, too .

Seeing your pictures from your point of view was great on two counts:
from a personal interest level, and from the picture's point of view
(which I think are pretty good). As for cropping , it is YOUR
picture; you should decide how it should be presented, and everyone else
can either like it or not, at their will.

(I shall be purchasing a scanner within a couple of weeks; then I can
return the PESO.)

My film scanner admittedly a rather in expensive one cost $300 a few
years ago. There are a few
of similar quality available today for less that $200. (That's US
dollars). At the rate these people
are charging you'd pay for the scanner in about 10-20 conversions. I'd
get the scanner. You make
no mention of resolution. Unless they are giving you scans of greater
that 9MP you would do better
with even the least expensive film scanner, or flat bed with a film
adapter.

Hi David,

Just another thought, maybe you're not metering correctly? If this is
the
case, the solution depends on what you're shooting. If you're doing
landscapes, unless you get it at a good time, chances are your sky and
your
foreground will require different exposures. Solution? To get a darker
sky,
meter off something slightly brighter than what you'd usually do, then
lock
your exposure settings (or remember them) then recompose. Another thing
to
consider for landscapes is ND filters, to help balance the dark and
light
(of course the exposure might come out 'too perfect' to be believable..
but
just experiment. If you're shooting people with sky in the background,
the
use of a slightly quicker exposure with fill flash will help you darken
your
sky too. Good luck!

Cheers,
Ryan

RE: new to the list

2004-08-02 Thread David Schneider
All:

I should have mentioned before where I live--which is Tijeras, New
Mexico, USA. (Tijeras is just east of Albuquerque, except that I am
straight up from it because I live way up in the mountains. Albuquerque
is where Bugs Bunny made a left hand turn ). And, for those of you
who know of Jan and Dean, I travel through the original Dead Man's Curve
they sang about on the way to the city on Route 66. It is a nice place
to live, all in all.
