Aren't LX's great like that.

Try Pentax in Colorado, if you call their 800 number they have a parts
department selection, I'm sure that's one they will have.

RE: Math term

2003-02-19 Thread Geoff Moes
I am not sure what you are looking for when you say class of number, if you mean
from a mathematical sense, then:

Numbers that can be expressed as fractions (ratios) are called Rational numbers.
Numbers that cannot be expressed as fractions (non repeating, non terminating
decimals) like PI and the square root of 2, etc. are called Irrational numbers. The
set
that includes both are called Real numbers. That may be more math than you were
looking for, hope it helps.

SG-60 Question

2003-03-20 Thread Geoff Moes

Sorry to get off the topic politics. But I was wondering about the SG-
60 screen, I recently acquired an extra with a body and was thinking
of selling because I like very wide angle lenses. I tried it with my
17mm f4 fish-eye and it looks fine. Boz's site (BTW Thanks and sorry
to hear about your decision) says that it is recommended for lenses
greater than 28 and wider than 3.5, has anyone else had this
experience?

Thanks,

Geoff

Its sounds like lots of fun.

GFM - thanks. etc

2004-06-09 Thread Geoff Moes
Wendy and I really enjoyed meeting everyone at GFM.

We also wanted to say thanks to Tom V. for driving the whole way down
and back, Bill and Phyllis Owens for their hospitality and the use of
their "Kitchen" facilities and to all the people who gave Wendy and I
transport (Mark, Stan, Bill, Cory, Bob S., Graywolf, and any one I
forgot). Also I'd like to convey a special thanks to Nico (the
meta-Lurker) for letting me play with his *istD not to mention trusting
me with it after a few beers, it is great fun and now I want one, he was
also nice enough to burn me a copy of the images I shot, which I will
have create a site for them.  Also I would like to thank Mark for the
use of his F100/2.8 Macro a truly great lens.

I hope every one had a safe and pleasant trip back, ours seemed to go by
pretty fast. We had good company on our trip; it was fun hearing stories
from our commonwealth brethren. Of course all the things that I needed
to do before I left are still undone and I am back to my routine.

Hope everyone else had good safe trips back.

300mm Lens

2001-10-27 Thread Geoff Moes

Hi,

I was contemplating getting a 300mm Lens. I use LX’s and MX’s so I
was thinking of getting a manual focus lens. There is an SMC M
300mm f4 on ebay right now that I was thinking of bidding on. I was
also thinking of getting a 2x tele-converter to use in conjunction with
it. I wanted to get some opinions on the variations of 300mm lenses
(excluding the the f2.8, too big and too expensive), what is the best
and how much do they go for? Is the A better then the M? Are they
compatible with a 2x converter and can you get good results with
that combination.

Also a 300mm sold on ebay a while back, it was listed as a
Greenstar, what is Greenstar?

Thanks,

Geoff

Re: Attention CANADIANS (MZ-s)

B&H in New York has them for $799 last time I checked. They have
a 14day return policy as long as the item is mint and returned with
all the packaging. They ship by Fed Ex. Also as for Baltimore, the
stores here in the DC Metro area seem to have them, although I
haven't looked lately, but I know Penn Camera in Tysons had one
every time I was in there.

Re: Light Boxes & Loupes

2001-11-19 Thread Geoff Moes

I recently purchased a Fuji 4x loupe, which is very crisp and clear.
It was about $70-80 locally at Penn in Vienna VA (A store that
seems to come up a lot on this list). I compared it with a few others
including a Schnieder, I thought the Fuji had less distortion at the
edges and I do believe that the lens is glass. I am very happy with it.
I have also recently tried my LX FE-1 finder as a Loupe, I wanted
more than 4x and the FE-1 was sitting there so I tried it. It actually
seems to work OK, has anyone else tried this? The coating does
seem to give colors a cooler appearance. I’m guessing it’s
something like 6x (I don’t know)

As for light tables I recently acquired the Porta-trace 5K 11x18 for
about the same price as the loupe from B&H, it’s OK, it seems to get
a little dimmer on the sides, but I am happy with it plus you can fit a
full 36+ roll of slides in two slide pages on it. Or more realistically in
my case, I can have one side stacked with slide pages and use the
other for viewing.

BTW the two stores I mentioned are my film buying stores.

Re: MX Focusing Screens

2001-11-22 Thread Geoff Moes

I've heard that in order to use LX screens in an MX you need to
have the meter recalibrated since the screens are brighter and the
meter reads from behind the screen. This could probably be
confirmed through experimentation. It also raises the question are
the LX screens consistent in there brightness or the recalibration
only be valid for certain screens?

Re: $ of LX finder (standard)

I've seen a few on ebay, I don't track the actual values like some of
the other PDML'ers. But I think the FA-1 goes for about $75 and up
depending on condition, box, etc. Also try an ebay search on
completed items, always a good way to see what has sold recently,
although they get dropped fairly quickly.

Re: LX located

2002-01-02 Thread Geoff Moes

Thanks! Just snagged the 300. I've been looking for the A*300 for a
while. It was $375 in case w/caps for an 8+, seems like a very
reasonable price. We’ll see when I get it, I bought an MX there a
while ago but it was broken. They were great about taking back and
reimbursing me though. I think they might have done themselves a
disservice by not listing it as the Greenstar on their website,
hopefully that is the reason for the low price.

300/4 A* Questions

2002-01-08 Thread Geoff Moes

I just got it today, thanks again to Collin. It seems like it is a
pretty decent one, although the shade is kind of beat up. You also
solved the mystery of how you knew so much about mpex’s stock beyond
what they post on their site. I am sorry to hear about Dave Thomas it
sounds like he was the decent guy he portrayed.

The questions are:

What is the deal the focus beyond infinity?

Also I have heard thee are some issues about the lens being sharp wide
open. At what aperture is the lens sharper, is there any info on the web
that someone can direct me to?

Thanks,

Geoff

Re: 300/4 A* Questions

2002-01-10 Thread Geoff Moes

Fred,

I will be curious to hear what you come up with. One of the main
features I wanted was smaller size and lighter weight, and I believe
this is one of the smaller 300mm lenses. I was planning on traveling
with this lens, even though taking it goes against my travel light
philosophy.

Re: Sending LX's to Reform School - US or Canada?

2002-01-10 Thread Geoff Moes

Fred,

I asked this same question of the list a while back. Several people
remarked that due to the list’s complaints that Colorado has gotten
their act together. As for things to ask, I just boxed up my LX to put
in the mail to Colorado, haven’t mailed it yet. It is my oldest (to me)
and most beat up, bought as demo model back when I couldn’t
afford a new one, I should have held out for a new one. I am asking
them to do a CLA/Rebuild to bring the camera up to spec and
asking them if they can do some cosmetic repairs like replace the
top and base plates and DOF Preview button. I even asked if I could
get the hollow shutter lock. If they do everything I ask it will be like a
new camera. That is if I don’t suffer from sticker shock when I get
the estimate.

I didn’t ask for the new mirror box or new shutter, but now I wonder
if I should. Good thing I haven’t sent it yet. Thanks Fred.

Pentax Colorado’s address, from there website is:

Pentax Corporation
Attention: Service
35 Inverness Drive East
Englewood CO 80112

Re: getting LX - worth it? (repairs,...)

2002-01-10 Thread Geoff Moes

The LX is a fine camera. However, It is not the most modern camera
and cannot do many automatic things. I personally like manual
cameras; the only SLR’s I own are MX’s and LX’s. The question to
buy one or not should be based on what you can afford and what
your needs are. The LX has some distinct draw backs, if you need
a quiet camera you may no want the LX, on the other hand if you
are shooting a lot of low light stuff then you might want it. I
personally love it, if you want a good mostly manual camera and can
afford it and the repairs, if necessary, then get it. I think people,
especially Americans suffer from the “me too” mentality. They all
have X so I should buy X.

If you do decide to get one, either buy one that has been recently
CLA’d or a later model with serial numbers 533 or 535, if a 538
exists it is probably worth it, although I have seen a lot of people
make mistakes with the serial numbers. So I wouldn’t be surprised
that it was a 528 or a 533, I have a 523 that I though was a 529 for a
while.

Re: 300/4 A* Questions

2002-01-10 Thread Geoff Moes

Sounds like I picked the right one for the weight/size requirement. I
have heard the focusing distance issue before. Why does that
matter to so many people. I bought this lens to shoot things that are
far away not close.

If I use the extention tubes, what are the other effects. Do I loose the
ablility to focus to infinity, does it increase magnification of the lens?

RE: LX Meter Readout

2001-10-18 Thread Geoff Moes

Does anyone know what the maximum shuter length is on the LX on
auto. I have read somewhere (the manual I think) that it is 250
seconds, however, I also remember reading on the web some one
sayingthat they did a 45 minute exposure on auto. Also is this
something that changed over course of production.

Thanks,

Geoff

Re: manual k-mount body

2001-10-20 Thread Geoff Moes

I would highly recommend the MX, it’s an extremely compact and
fully mechanical semi-pro model. It’s simple and has some nice
features. It’s my favorite camera (after the LX). You can get a
decent one on ebay for about $150. You won’t regret it. I have
several, I even dropped down some concrete stairs, it looked like
hell, but still worked. Just beware that the light seal foam on the lens
mount and back door deteriorate and need to be replaced.

Re: debating on buying an mx....

2002-01-13 Thread Geoff Moes

The mirror box foam light seals and back door light seals degrade
also. Not an expensive fix. Also check the view finder (focusing
screen and mirror) for the greasy black deposits from the degraded
foam. If these problems occur, the shop selling it may fix them for
you or adjust the price.

Also the flash hot shoe often won't work sometimes. You might want
to bring your own lens and flash to test it out, one advantage over
ebay.

They are great cameras when they are in good working order.
