Thank you Fernando

I used AutoPano Pro for the stitching.

Re: PESO - Fairy Bower Falls

2007-04-03 Thread J and K Messervy
Thank you Rick

I didn't have to do it as a 30 shot pano, but a single wide angle shot
couldn't capture all of the detail to my satisfaction...besides, it was a
challenge. It's actually quite a high waterfall, I just didn't bother
trying to capture the main falls, just the cascade at the base.

My photobucket name is Sherman as I started it initially to host shots from
my 4wd trips. My old tank of a landcruiser was nicknamed Sherman as it was
built like a Sherman tank.

cheers

PESO - Fairy Bower Falls

2007-04-01 Thread J and K Messervy
This is a 30 (!) shot panorama (5 rows of 6 shots). Each shot was taken at
55mm focal length and the stitched image was a little over 1gb and
equivalent to 123 megapixels! This has been heavily resized obviously but
I'll be printing this about 60cm by 35cm when I've got the money.

These falls are in Morton National Park in the NSW Southern Highlands and
last Sunday I had them all to myself. It's a 1.1 km walk one way to the
base of the falls and it is very steep...basically steps cut into the cliff.
The effort was worth it though, what a beautiful place it is.

Ridiculous prices

2007-03-01 Thread J and K Messervy
I would dearly love an FA77 f1.8 limited lens and keep an eye out for them
on Ebay. In terms of quality and rendering, from photos I've seen on the
net, the DA70 limited comes a distant second.

I found an ebay auction today here in Australia for an unused (the buyer
says new, it's not) FA77 limited. The story is he ordered it and only
received it in Feb. Now he's decided to sell it. Whether or not he's used
it, he bought it retail and is now selling it, that makes it used. The
auction has a couple of days to go and has no bids as yet...not surprising
really, since the seller STARTED the auction at $1,100 AUD!!! That's
bordering on criminal!

Looks like I'll have to settle for a DA70 2.4 limited although they're also
damn pricey.

Much as I love my K10D, I hate what it and the K100 have done to used glass
prices. :(

Forgive my ignorance, but what use is Lightroom?

2007-02-21 Thread J and K Messervy
I've just installed my free copy of Lightroom. My normal workflow involves
Raw Converter, Adobe Bridge, ACR and Photoshop CS2. I organise all of my
pics through Adobe Bridge and launch ACR and CS2 from there. That works
well for me.

Being offered something for free, I naturally checked it out. Now I've got
to say the interface is not very user friendly. It tells me that I have to
import a library of photoswhy the hell can't I just open and work on
photos I have saved already?!

Fine I think, I'll import some photos and have a play. I try to set up auto
import to import all of my recent photos. Nope, I'm told the folder can't
be used. It appears that Lightroom will not allow me to use external hard
drives that are connected by USB. WTF? I doubt too many photographers
store all their images on their internal hard drive. I'm sure as hell not
going to start trying to cram my 400 or so Gb of image files onto my 60Gb
laptop drive!

Anyway, I put that issue aside and managed to import a folder manually from
my external drive. I tried developing a RAW file. It seemed to work okay.
Of course, I then tried to save it as a converted file...no save option???!!
It seems I have to 'export' it to CS2.

Am I missing something obvious or is Lightroom an entirely to restrictive
and useless application? What does it offer that the traditional
Bridge-ACR-Bridge-CS2 workflow doesn't, besides frustration?

Please enlighten me before I remove the programme from my computer!

Vivitar 24/2 value?

2007-02-17 Thread J and K Messervy
As nice a lens as it is, I don't have a lot of use for it, so I plan to sell
my Vivitar 24/2.

Can those in the know give me an indication of the kind of price I should
expect it to go for?

Re: PESO - First Day of School

2007-02-06 Thread J and K Messervy
Thanks mate. I manage fine with my 50mm macro lens which is manual focus.
What's bothering me with the 1.7 is the camera's focus indicator says the
focus is right, but subsequent viewing on the computer shows a slightly oof
shot.

Hopefully practice will make perfect.

PESO - Daddy long legs

2007-01-28 Thread J and K Messervy
I found this specimen in the bathroom today and took a few shots with the
macro lens and wireless, off camera flash. Bouncing the flash off the floor
tiles the spider was on gave it this fragile, made of glass look.

77mm f1.8 ltd

2007-01-27 Thread J and K Messervy
I've heard nothing but praise for this lens and have to say that the sample
pics I've seen taken with it are lovely. I'm doing more portraits (mainly
of my kids) lately and am also considering doing my first wedding this year,
so a fast, short telephoto is something I'd love to get.

The problem seems to be that finding a 77 ltd (let alone affording one)
appears quite difficult. I gather that Pentax is not keeping up with
demand. From what I've seen of the DA70 ltd, I'd prefer the 77, for that
extra speed and its reputation.

Are they as hard to find as my web searching leads me to believe? Another
option may be an old 85 1.8, but they're few and far between and also quite
expensive when they do turn up.

Any suggestions?

Asked to do a wedding.

2007-01-24 Thread J and K Messervy
I have been asked whether I'd be interested in photographing the wedding of
the brother of an acquaintance.

Now, I'm a very keen amateur and have been really into photography for about
15 months. I'm really thrilled to have been asked (the request was based on
my work in my online gallery), but also more than a little hesitant to
commit to doing it. The wedding isn't until October, so there's lots of
time to prepare.

I've never been responsible for taking photos for any important event, I
just take them for myself. I know the technical side and use the K10D's
various manual functions, etc and I know I'm a reasonably good photographer.
I'm not sure that I'm good enough to do a wedding though, it's more than a
little scary.

I know there are people with pro experience on here, so I'm looking for
advice, tips, etc.

I reckon if I do it, I'll want another flash (360 to go with my 540), a fast
normal range zoom, lots of SD cards, etc. What else should I be thinking
about? I will have plenty of time to prepare and the venue is here in
Canberra, so i can scout it out and try shooting my family there, etc.

Should I back myself, trust my skills and jump in? It could lead to a
lucrative sideline and would certainly boost my experience and confidence if
successful. It would also be a real sense of accomplishment if I did a good
job. What pitfalls are there?

I don't even know what I should charge. I reckon I'd have to spend a bit on
gear to be ready, but I can't factor that into my fee.

Any and all tips, tricks and advice would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks

James

Re: OT- eBay

2007-01-23 Thread J and K Messervy
I've noticed that ALL sellers I've dealt with wait unti I've left feedback
before they will. I consider it to be feedback blackmail in a way. You
know that you will get negative feedback if you leave negative feedback.

On the three occasions I've sold something, I've made a point to leave
feedback as soon as the buyer has completed his part of the
transaction...ie, paid.

evening, I've been experimenting with wireless flash. This shot had the

PESO - Comet McNaught

2007-01-15 Thread J and K Messervy
I shot this in the back yard this evening (About 1/2 and hour ago actually)
with the 600mm mirror lens and 2x teleconverter. That hill is 2 suburbs
away (about 3km). This was a 76 second exposure with the wireless remote.
I only closed the shutter when the comet disappeared behind the hill.

Re: PESO - what bird is this?

2007-01-09 Thread J and K Messervy
Thanks. I've also confirmed that it is a Silver eye.

The lens is just a Sigma 600mm f8 mirror telephoto. It doesn't really have
anything else to identify it. It's sharper than I was expecting though...if
you get the focus spot on, which is a little difficult.

PESO - what bird is this?

2007-01-09 Thread J and K Messervy
This is one of my first shots with the Sigma 600mm mirror lens I bought from
Ebay. Was shot on the K10D with AF540FGZ flash with everything on full
manual.

http://tinyurl.com/yhyn37

I don't know what kind of bird it is, but they're about the size of a
sparrow or finch and they're enjoying the apricots on the tree in our back
yard at present. I was about 4 metres away when I took the shot.

Re: K10D with AF540FGZ

2007-01-04 Thread J and K Messervy
Thanks for that reply mate.

I find it annoying that it doesn't expose correctly in p-ttl and with the
camera in auto mode. Surely that is the basic requirement for them to get
right? Oh well, I'll just keep dialling in flash compensation or exposure
compensation on the camera...at least it's easy enough to do.

K10D with AF540FGZ

2007-01-04 Thread J and K Messervy
I received my flash the other day and have been playing with it a bit
indoors and out.

First impressions are good, however the exposure results in P-TTL are a
little disappointing. I'm finding that for a shot indoors of my kids or
similar at quite close range, bouncing off the white ceiling, I get spot on
results...but only when I've set the flash exposure compensation to +1.

I would have thought that this flash (considering how damn expensive it is)
should provide proper exposure with everything set to default. I know
bouncing loses some light, but it's not a power problem as I can manually
set the flash to light properly.

Anyone have any suggestions?

Sigma 600mm mirror lens?

Enablement - lens advice

2006-12-17 Thread J and K Messervy
I should hopefully have a little money to spend on lenses and a flash soon.

I currently have the Pentax 18-55 kit lens, Sigma 70-210 f4.5-5.6 zoom
(cheap and a little nasty), Sigma 50mm f2.8 manual focus macro and Vivitar
400mm f5.6 (cheap, nasty and soft).

What I'd like is a decent telephoto aound the 400-500mm range, either a good
zoom in the moderate telephoto range or a couple of good primes to cover the
moderate telephoto range and a decent super wide rectilinear zoom.

My budget (after purchasing an AF540 FGZ flash) will likely be approx
AUD1300. I would prefer to stick with Pentax lenses, but good, sharp third
party lenses would be okay (Sigma 10-20 for example).

Can the Pentax lens gurus out there please give me some suggestions as to
which lenses I should be looking for on Ebay, etc that would suit my needs
in terms of focal length, provide good image quality and (hopefully) be
affordable.

Many thanks in advance!

I take offence at this. No need to be a nasty b*tch thanks very much. My
shake reduction sometimes works and sometimes doesn't. This has been
bourne out by both watching the sensor move (or not) AND by the photographic
results. Having said that, I love the camera and SR is not that important
to me, so the sky is NOT falling, it just appears that the occasional unit
has glitches...which is to be expected with a new model.

It is a FACT that my SR is intermittant in its operation. I wish that
wasn't the case, but I'm loathe to send it away for rectification as I don't
want to be without the camera.

I really DON'T want to send it away for warranty repair as it's my only

I'm doing the child care centre's "graduation" Christmas concert for the
kids going to kindy next year. No biggie, they just asked me to take the
photos and I might make a few dollars pocket money. I really wanted to have
an AF540FGZ for this as my Sigma flash won't work properly with the K10D. I
think I'll have to take the photos outside in open shade and use the built
in flash for fill.

Re: K10D at low speeds

2006-12-08 Thread J and K Messervy
This was one of my first shots with the K10D. Outside in late afternoon
light. ISO 100 and no noise removal at all. Shot as DNG and converted to
PSD in ACR. Then levels, curves, rezize down and very slight smart sharpen
and that was it.

No noise that I can see and the sharpness and punch of the shots coming from
the K10D have really startled me compared to the ist DL.

Thanks Brian

The colour version had very little colour in it. Just a bit of green for
the water plants and a cyan/blue tinge in the mist. To my eye it had just
enough colour to ruin the composition and not enough to add anything

2006-11-27 Thread J and K Messervy
Damn you! :)

I rang the store I ordered through this arvo and they said they'd just
received a stock delivery. I thought "YES!" until they said they'd unpack
and go through the order tomorrow and would I like to ring back about
lunchtime tomorrow?

I even went in there to beg, but they just said they wouldn't look at the
stock until the morning. :(

How frustrating knowing that my camera was probably sitting there in a box
but they couldn't be arsed getting it!

Difinitive answer on Sigma flashes and K10D?

2006-11-27 Thread J and K Messervy
I have a Sigma EF500 DG ST flash that I use for all of my flash photography
at present. I am saving for a Pentax AF540 but am concerned that I may need
to find the funds for the Pentax sooner.

I've been asked by my daughter's child care centre to take the group photos
of the preschoolers "graduating" to Kindi this year. As it will be flash
photography and I'll be using the K10D, can anyone tell me whether the Sigma
will sork with the camera? If the answer is no, does that mean it won't
work at all or will it just not meter as effectively.

I'm very much a lay person when it comes to the finer points of flash
photography and the terminology. If I won't be able to use the Sigma, I'll
need to find some way to get hold of the Pentax flash in the next 2-3
weeks...not sure that's possible.

Thanks
James

It's those ten extra bits rattling around in there. They're discarded when
the 22 bit ADC produces 12 bit raw files. I believe there's a little
canister in the body that holds the discarded bits. That's what you can
hear rattling. When full, you'll have to remove the canister to empty the
discarded bits.

I've had a few Velvia 50 trannies from the 67 scanned (low res 4mb tiff).
Here are two of them, all I've done is crop, curves and smart sharpen.

I just love the colour and sharpness of the originals, obviously some of
that gets lost in the scan.

P67 + Velvia 50 = WOW!

2006-11-17 Thread J and K Messervy
A few people told me that I'd be blown away when I finally got some colour
transparencies deveoloped from the P67. Well, I shot two and a bit rolls of
Velvia 50 in Sydney on Sunday night, Monday morning andWOW!

Under the 8X magnifying loupe I bought, the detail, sharpness and colour are
simply stunning. I rated the film at iso 40 and shot everything from
fireworks to a night shot of Darling Harbour to the street scene from the
11th floor hotel balcony and the results really do blow away anything I
could acheive with Velvia 50 and the 35mm LX.

I'm planning to get some of the frames scanned at lowish res next week so I
can post them on the web. I will link to them when they're ready.

I can't wait to get a 45mm lens for this camera...so far all I have is the
75mm f4.5 which is SHARP!

I may have lost the LX wink, but I've definitely gained the 67 grin from ear
to ear.

I didn't even mind carrying my lowerpro computrekker back back around Syndey
full of istDL, P67, lenses and filters and the tripod. People may have
looked at me funny and my wife my have rolled her eyes, but the results are
SO worth it.

Oh how times have changed

2006-11-02 Thread J and K Messervy
I borrowed "The Medium Format Advantage" by Enrst Wildi from the local
library the other day and it is very informative. The book was published in
1995. I've just reached the chapter on Digital Imaging and Medium Format
and it is almost quaint.

I quote:

"Image processing programs run faster when there is a large amount of RAM
available. Plan on at least 16 MB of RAM. If you want to do commercial
work, plan on more. Just as you will need plenty of RAM when processing
your images, you will need a large-capacity hard disk for storing your
images. At lease 300 MB is a good starting place."

:)

Thanks mate. i'll try a few shots with both methods and take notes so I
have a good starting point.

I can use the meter prism, but it's a bit of an unknown. I thought this
could give me better control, considering slide film's narrow range. I'm
also mainly talking about contrasy scenes. For an average, evenly lit
scene, I'd probably just use the prism as it is centre weighted I believe.

Simplified zone exposure system for colour transparency

2006-11-02 Thread J and K Messervy
I've loaded the P67 with Velvia 100F and plan to take some shots over the
weekend. I'm still in the learning stage with the camera and metering
prism.

I've been googling exposure systems, etc and it seems a modified zone system
should work pretty well. Basically, it seems the advice is that slide film
has a range of about zone 3 to zone 7. Therefore, if I spot meter with my
*istDL on a spot in the scene that I want to set as the lightest tone with
detail, it will give an exposure setting for zone 5 (mid grey). I should
therefore increase that by 3 stops (two stops to reach zone 7 and one more
to account for the DL being iso 200 and the film being iso 100) and that
should put the metered part of the scene into zone 7. Then, providing the
scene doesn't also have shadows too deep for the film to handle, I should
get a good exposure.

Am I on the right track?

Thanks

James
