Re: Quick survey

2024-06-23 Thread Matthew Hunt
I shoot PEF, and convert to DNG on import with Lightroom ("Copy as DNG").

The reason I do this is that when Lightroom does the conversion, it embeds
a checksum that can later be used with "Library > Validate DNG Files" to
verify that no disk corruption has occurred. At least at the time I decided
to do things this way, DNG as shot by my cameras did not embed this
checksum.

Once a month, I select all the photos in my catalog and run the Validate
task. (Knock on wood, it has never found an error so far.)

Re: ACR Enhanced Noise Reduction Photos

2023-04-23 Thread Matthew Hunt
I just did a quick search through my library for high-ISO photos to try it
out. I was particularly impressed by this example, where the new algorithm
preserved the colors in a sparkly birthday party tablecloth, which were
completely obliterated by the old algorithm. (I didn't spend any time
fine-tuning the settings for either.)

Re: Dilemma

2021-07-30 Thread Matthew Hunt
I don't have the broad experience with different cameras that many
folks on this list do, but my Canonet QL15 GIII is my sentimental
favorite, and the only film camera that I still occasionally use in
the digital era. The lens is probably better than you're anticipating.

(The most recent ones, at the top, are part of a double-exposure
project with a friend, where we each shot the same roll.)

One of my Canonet shots was published in a book, quite large:

Not in camera. The camera was on a tripod shooting continuously for
the duration of the storm (resulting in hundreds of exposures), and I
cherry-picked the two best frames and merged them in Photoshop. The
camera was on the covered balcony of our vacation condo (10th floor)

The tiny prism makes me think of an off-axis guider for a telescope (the
prism functions as a mirror, diverting some of the light near the edge of

goes to the main camera).

That sucks, but I don't think it's related to the API change. (I

mapping module, as described here:

You don't have maps and images of the whole world on your computer.
When you use the mapping module in Lightroom, it accesses Google's
servers for the maps and images.

> 2. I have two TimeMachine backups running. Why can’t one revert to a version

The changes are in Google's servers. They are changing the API (the
way that software such as Lightroom needs to talk to their servers to
retrieve maps). The old way that your copy of Lightroom 6 uses is no
longer supported.

> 3. Why are the people who run large tech companies such jerks?

Maintaining and old API in addition to the new API would incur costs
to Google, which they do not wish to incur. Adobe incurs costs
updating Lightroom to the new API, and they recover these costs
through the subscription pricing model, which you have elected not to
pay. This is, to be frank, an example of why even "software that's
finished and works" requires maintenance, and why software companies
are moving to subscription models to the degree that the market allows
them to do so.

Rainbows are circular (they form a 42-degree circle around the
anti-solar point). If you're not used to seeing them that way, I think
it's for two reasons: The projection used by rectilinear lenses
distorts the circular shape if the rainbow is off-center, and quite
often most of the rainbow is below the horizon, so we only see the top
portion, which I think fools the eye into thinking it's more like a
parabola or other shape.

Panorama stitching software usually has a number of options for the
projection, and I assume at least some of them preserve the true
circular shape.

You can see more than 180 degrees of a rainbow if you are up high and
have rainy air below you. Pictures of >180 degree rainbows taken from
aircraft are fairly common; see, for example:

Re: A gizmo for you astral guys

2018-05-25 Thread Matthew Hunt
It's not for astrophotography, but it is interesting!

A telecentric lens almost sounds like magic: The size of an object imaged
with the lens doesn't vary with distance from the lens. So if you image a
certain object, and its image is 10mm tall on the sensor, and you move the
object further away from the lens, the image stays 10mm tall instead of
getting smaller. Another way of putting it is that the lens' projection is
orthographic, the "view from infinity" perspective. This property makes it
useful for measuring the sizes of objects, such as for quality control on
an assembly line.

Since the field of view is more like a cylinder projecting from the lens to
infinity, instead of a cone (like normal lenses), the field of view is
basically set by the diameter of the lens. That's why this lens has a
rather large looking diameter and is described as "large field".

Re: Pentax K3ll

Is it possible that a camera setting is the problem?

The default setting for "Action in AF.C Continuous" (C3.17 in the menu
system) is "Focus priority". That means the camera will prioritize getting
the shot in focus, rather than shooting at the fastest rate. It might seem
erratic or slow. You could try setting it to "FPS priority" and see if it
works better for you. See page 45 of the manual for more information.

Definitely not a lunar eclipse. Besides the reason you give, lunar eclipses
take place at the full moon, resulting in direct, flat light on the moon.
But the craters in this picture have shadows to one side, consistent with

Yeah, the film camera I'd like to shoot again is my Canonet
rangefinder, but doubling the size is a non-starter for me.

Also, it took me a minute to understand how this thing works: It
places a focusing screen at the original film plane, then images the
focusing screen with a tiny camera some distance behind it. Probably
only suitable for a lo-fi aesthetic.

Dry run for the eclipse (I'll be in the totality zone). So a base

bracketing to get +2 and +4. And hopefully I can make a decent movie

For the K-3 II, it's close to 1/second, but might fall a little short
of that. I did a timelapse with 3-shot bracketing at an interval of 3

I'm pretty sure that if you're in Live View, the mirror stays locked

Flickr's not keeping their Pentax lens ID database up-to-date enough
to understand the code in straight-out-of-camera files. They're

Nah, you just need newer software.

The "8 61" code I found in your EXIF (in my previous email) is the
correct code for that lens, BTW:

If you don't believe me, throw a raw file somewhere I can download it,

Re: EXIF Mystery

2017-07-10 Thread Matthew Hunt
In the Pentax system, the lens doesn't report a readable name to the
camera, but reports a couple of unique numbers that are recorded in the
EXIF. Your software then has to be updated to map those numbers to the
user-readable name of the lens. According to this page:
https://helpx.adobe.com/camera-raw/kb/supported-lenses.html#Pentax
support for the 28-105 was added in Camera Raw 9.6. Do you have at least
that version?

Actually, I'll answer my own question... I used Jeffrey's EXIF viewer:
http://exif.regex.info/exif.cgi
on your (lovely) recent photo:
http://www.markcassino.com/b2evolution/media/blogs/calarti/2017/17-07-09/mccp8125_tu2.jpg?mtime=1499635572
and the EXIF dump says you're using Camera Raw 9.1.1, so that's why it
can't decode the lens code.

If you look at Jeffrey's EXIF dump, near the top, you'll see "Lens: 8 61".
Those are the two numbers that identify the lens. So Jeffrey's library
(exiftool or something?) doesn't properly decode it either, but the field
is being populated by the lens and camera--it doesn't look like a
malfunction to me.

Re: LR Dehaze filter

2017-05-17 Thread Matthew Hunt
The Dehaze tool is officially only in Lightroom CC, not in perpetually
licensed Lightroom 6. However, if a preset is created in Lr CC with a
dehaze setting, Lr 6 will understand and apply that dehaze setting. So some
nice people have created presets with a range of dehaze settings that you
can use in Lr 6:

https://petapixel.com/2015/06/24/this-preset-pack-brings-real-dehaze-to-lightroom-6-1/

It's not as convenient as a slider, but it is, as you say, a workaround.

My K10D, K-7, and K-5 II, set to New York, have never automatically
transitioned DST. I have a calendar reminder to do it when the clocks
change. The camera is never correct until I change the DST checkbox.

Here's a PentaxForums thread stating that there is no automatic DST changeover:

Stan's description is consistent with having to check the DST box when

Or the camera does not have a built-in table for DST transitions
anywhere in the world, and requires the user to select DST manually at
the start of DST. This is the case for the K-5 II, and I've seen no
evidence that the K-1 is different.

Um, has anybody actually said that it changed automatically in the US
or anywhere else? I don't think it does. Stan said the time was
correct on the camera that had DST checked. The other camera became
correct when he turned DST on. That's consistent with manual selection
of the time zone and DST, not automatic.

Change the DST setting, not the time, if you want to continue using
the accurate time provided by GPS. If you leave DST unchecked and
change the time manually by an hour, it will become wrong again when
the GPS sets the time. (At least based on experience with the K-5 II
and O-GPS1.)

Every year some countries in the world change their laws regarding
time zones and DST. I would imagine Pentax doesn't want to take on the
responsibility of issuing firmware updates for years to incorporate
these changes.

(For examples, here's the mailing list archive for one of the software

Re: Why did my K1 not go automatically to DST?

2017-03-27 Thread Matthew Hunt
I don't have a K-1, but none of my Pentax cameras have ever
transitioned automatically between standard time and DST. That is, the
camera does not know the rules for DST transitions, but instead relies
on the user to tell it whether DST is in effect. The camera will use
the timezone and DST setting that you tell it to convert from
universal time (from the GPS) to local time.

My cameras let me set two time zones of interest: A "hometown" time
zone (orange house) and a "destination" time zone (blue airplane). I
set the home time zone to Eastern Standard Time (i.e. "New York" time,
no DST) and the destination time zone to Eastern Daylight Time (i.e.
"New York" time, with DST).

In the spring, I select the "destination" time zone, and in the fall I
go back to the "hometown" time zone.

Alternatively, you could check and uncheck DST as required.

In case it helps your googling, what you're trying to achieve is
"collimation" of light.

When I taught astronomical instrumentation lab, we achieved this on
the bench with a white light shining onto a spatial filter (basically
a pinhole), with the spatial filter located in the focal plane of a
Nikon 200/2.8 or 300/4 lens (which was "locked down" to infinity
focus). The light coming out the front of the lens was (reasonably)
collimated. If you picture parallel rays coming from a star on the sky
and being focused to a point on the sensor, it's exactly that, except
the light is moving in reverse.

We then sent the collimated light into rudimentary lenses (e.g.
achromatic doublets) and viewed the spots produced, to compare the
actual aberrations with predicted spot diagrams from optical design
software.

The big caveats are:
1) Your collimating lens has to be focused at infinity and the right
distance from the point source, or the light that comes out isn't
collimated (it will "look" closer or farther than infinity). So this
just shifts the problem of finding infinity focus to another optic!
You may be able to get calibrated collimating lenses, making it a
mechanical positioning problem.
2) At least if you're trying to evaluate aberrations of the optics
under test, the collimating lens has to be optically superior to the
test lens, or its own aberrations will come into play. In our case,
with good Nikon lenses against doublets or triplets, this was the
case.

Re: LR question - Original photo vs. smart preview

2016-09-29 Thread Matthew Hunt
I have not used Smart Previews myself, but you may be interested in
the release notes for the most recent update. It suggests that
previously, disconnecting the full-size files could speed up develop
operations. There is now a setting to use the smart previews instead
of the full-sized images, without having to disconnect the originals.

http://blogs.adobe.com/lightroomjournal/2016/09/lightroom-cc-2015-7-now-available.html

Smart Previews for Faster Performance

You’ve always been able to use Smart Previews in the Develop Module as
a way to edit photos without having access to the original images on
disk. Astute customers reported faster performance in the Develop
Module when using Smart Previews and keeping their original images
disconnected from their computer. Now, you can set a Preference in
the Performance tab so that Lightroom will always use Smart Previews
in the Develop Module, if they are available, even when the original
files are also available.

To do so,

Choose Edit > Preferences.
In the Preferences dialog, select the Performance tab.
In the Develop section, select Use Smart Previews Instead Of Originals
For Image Editing.
Click OK and then restart Lightroom.

In the cube farm where I work, some people went through a phase of

having given up on the idea, wedged their translucent white ball

That is not a capability of Find My iPhone, AFAIK. But when you have
the phone in your possession, try Settings > Privacy > Location

this setting was enabled, there will be a list of locations where the
phone has recently been. Not a continuous tracklog, but places you've

Believe it or not, the inch sizes refer to the sizes of vacuum tubes
that used to house video sensors. The sensor itself would naturally be
somewhat smaller than the tube enclosing it.

In Lightroom CC corresponding to 6.6, they've added manually-aided
automatic perspective correction. In other words, you can explicitly
indicate one or more horizontal or vertical features to guide the
transformation. Because of the added complexity, I guess, they've
broken the geometric features out of the Lens Corrections panel into a
new Transform panel.

(I guess it also makes logical sense, as perspective corrections
aren't lens-based.)

If you do the move within Lightroom, the catalog is updated as part of

knows that you're moving the photos and keeps everything straight.

Looking at the lens mount, with the red dot at 12-o'clock, the screw

A step is a factor of two in exposure--the same thing most people mean
when they say "stops".

Some writers maintain a distinction between "steps" and "stops":
"stop" refers to the aperture stop--the physical obstruction in the
lens, while "step" is used as a unit of exposure change (which depends
on both the aperture and shutter speed).

I have a P-TTL Metz 48 AF-1 that shows the focal length on the LCD. On
my APS-C cameras, the focal length displayed on the flash is the
35mm-equivalent focal length. (That is, if I have a 50mm lens on the
camera, the flash shows 75mm.) So I think the Pentax flash protocol is
working in 35mm focal lengths already, and the APS-C cameras fudge it
so the flash covers the APS-C FOV.

If the AF540GZ displays the focal length, and it's the true focal
length (not 35mm-equivalent), then I would speculate that either the
flash is fudging it back to APS-C for display purposes (so you might
need a firmware update for display accuracy) or the flash protocol is
designed to explicitly support both FF and APS-C (but Metz didn't
implement that part of the protocol). Either way, I think you'll be OK
as far as the actual flash zoom mechanism is concerned.

Re: Is lightroom doing some sort of tone mapping?

2016-02-05 Thread Matthew Hunt
Since Process Version 2012 was introduced in Lightroom 4, the tonal
controls have been image-adaptive, which is basically another word for
"tone mapping". Here is a blog post I wrote on the subject at the
time:

http://scotchtape.ductwhisky.com/2012/01/hdr-photojournalism-and-lightroom-4.html

Keep in mind that since then Adobe has introduced HDR photo merge in
Lightroom, and the the basic tonal controls are able to corral a wide
range of tones in those images. So, yeah, tone mapping.
